Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

Honeymoon - left all my shoes behind except my ‘going away’ outfit shoes (peep toe slingbacks ) - it was a long time ago.

we went to Cornwall in a caravan and were completely skint so no money to buy any, so I bought pair of flip flops and live in them for a week. Rain (there was a lot) and shine. 😂😂

@user2848502016 I had left on the side to do my face pre going to airport - did my face and then realised I needed to empty bins - H brought suitcases down and make up bag remained on side of sink !! Didn’t realise till we were in Majorca - just bought the basics over there as luckily we were having first 2 nights in Palma - probably my barest look ever that holiday !!

Also DH on a work trip to the states forgot the wallet he’d put his work Amex and credit cards into. Got to the US and couldn’t pick up his rental as no credit card. Travelled with a colleague who said it’s grand I’ve got my car except he’d forgotten his driving licence. So no cars hired (both credit card and licence needed to be for the same person). Luckily a 3rd college arrived that evening who managed to remember his shit and was designated driver for the trip

It was the days before google/apple pay

Our Christmas presents, on a holiday at Christmas when the kids were young.

Oh no! Poor you 😢.

How did you get round it?

SummerySunshine8 · 27/05/2025 15:45

8 year old. Family holiday to France, completely forgot about him.

Good job he was home though as two men broke in and tried to rob the place.

My DM once forgot to pack any shoes. All she had were the trainers she wore on the plane, to a pretty rural beach destination. That was funny.

Did this for my honeymoon. Got to the hotel in my wedding shoes but hadn’t packed normal shoes. Had to travel the next day (Sunday) in those then wear them to a shoe shop on the Monday. They didn’t go that well with jeans!

My strapless bra when I was 18. Suitcase full of outfits I couldn't wear without it (in the days when bra straps could NOT be visible) and budget too limited to afford to buy one. Spent the whole holiday in the same two tops. It was a massive deal to me, and 38 years on I still remember how that holiday was 'ruined'.

Cattenberg · 27/05/2025 15:46

I've forgotten pyjamas more than once.

I'm not surprised that PP's have forgotten underwear. I am surprised that some of them decided to wear the same pants all week or go commando most days. How much does a multipack of pants cost? And there are very few places you can't buy them.

JudgeJ · 27/05/2025 15:47

Very early in our marriage OH forgot his razor and, being a Yorkshireman, wouldn't buy a new one and grew a little beard, it stayed with him for the next 50+ years, no-one recognises him in photos before the beard.

Cherrysoup · 27/05/2025 15:48

My coat. I was off to the Lakes in the May Bank holiday weekend. I froze. Nobody else’s coat fit, my family are all teeny. I went to the nearest village asap but they only had a thin jacket in my size.

Hysterectomynext · 27/05/2025 15:51

My son, Kevin. I did it two years running too 😩

Hedonism · 27/05/2025 15:52

We left the coolbox full of food for our self catering holiday in the middle of the kitchen floor.

We were staying on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Luckily the owners also lived on-site and kindly gave us enough stuff for an evening meal.

fromthegecko · 27/05/2025 15:53

A pineapple. When we got back it had decayed, then evaporated, to a tiny black stain and the spiky topknot of leaves, no smell. Proof that they are virtually all water.

LikeARacoonOnMeth · 27/05/2025 15:54

Camping trip, fairly remote, hours away from any decent shops.
Forgot the sleeping bags.
DH did a 3 hour round trip to a relatives house to borrow theirs as it was nearer.

Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

Sometimes I tear his bowl away from him before he's even finished to immediately dip it in bleach. Some people are slatterns!

dizzydizzydizzy · 27/05/2025 15:55

Not me but DM - spare hearing aid batteries. She is as deaf as a doorpost and the batteries needed replacing at the start of the holiday. Made all communication an exhausting and frustrating for all of us, probably most of all DM to be fair.

Nacknick · 27/05/2025 15:57

The roofbox keys.

All the fun stuff was in the roofbox, including the gin…!

LondonFox · 27/05/2025 15:58

Wet wipes for festival camping.
Also my friend forgot her bathing whatever she had and borrowed mine for the whole week. I had two bikini sets so it worked out but we sat around wet all day long.

My pants.

Same but at least it was only a weekend break.

WheresMyAlex · 27/05/2025 16:01

@Nerdynerdynerd thanks for that, first comment on mn that’s actually made me laugh out loud in ages! 😂

ChocolateCinderToffee · 27/05/2025 16:06

My purse. Fortunately my cards were in a separate place, but still.

Is this a joke? Or do people actually wash their dogs' bowls every day?

It's a joke, right?

The worse thing I ever left at home was all the tent hooks. Cue dash to a local camping shop that was about to close for the weekend 😆

PGmicstand · 27/05/2025 16:11

Not quite left at home, but forgot.

When we were moving house, we had a side table in the spare room which had become the 'dumping ground' for things. Amongst the papers we found a paper bag containing a flattened and completely dried out banana.

BigDahliaFan · 27/05/2025 16:11

DH's ex wife (they were then only separated) had to drop his passport off with us at the airport when we went for our first abroad trip away....

He left his passport in a hotel safe on another trip (I'd flown over to meet him as he was finishing a work trip) and didn't realise till 2 weeks later as we were due to fly home from a road trip. He had to get a taxi across LA while I relaxed at the airport....he made it back just in time.
