Worst thing you left at home when you went on holiday?

Years ago, I did a quick clean of the kitchen, just before leaving for a fortnight away. Completely forgot about the dog's bowl which was on the floor with some dog food in it. When we returned, kitchen had a weird smell, and the bowl was a seething mess of wriggling maggots!

The booking reference number for the cheap overnight hotel en route. Reception was closed (I did say cheap) so couldn't get room keys from the machine. Every hotel for scores of miles around booked up. We slept in the car. Well, I say slept...

All my clothes! Forget where we went, I was ironing clothes, going off on a night shift, nursing, flying the following morning. Got a call from DH work mate, was he at home,no,at work. Then the guy told me he had passed out at work (heat wave, garage with plastic roof) he was taken to hospital, put on an IV we had to wait for the Dr to confirm "fit to fly", after my night shift, I quickly packed his stuff forgot all mine. Bought some at the airport, some on arrival, I think it was Cos.

Dh forgot to bring his suit when we went to my sister's wedding.

Not a holiday but ds4 had an operation last month and I forgot the chargers for our tablets and phones. Thankfully the hospital had a whsmith that sold chargers but they were a lot more expensive than the ones I normally buy.

The pants for my 4 year old ds on a long weekend. At first I thought, okay not a major problem we can rinse them or whatever overnight. Then he got really bad diarrhea...

littlesilkworm · 27/05/2025 14:38

We packed a car full of stuff to go camping, when we arrived at the camping site, I realised I had everything except the tent. Confused

Andoutcomethewolves · 27/05/2025 14:38

Not quite the same but when I went to Thailand as a teenager I got extremely drunk the night before and don't remember packing. Got to my hotel in Bangkok and opened my bag to reveal a massive winter coat, ten vests, no other clothes including underwear or any form of skirts or shorts and no toiletries whatsoever. Ah well it made for a good shopping trip around Bangkok!

Someone I knew left her contraceptive pills at home, didn’t realise till they got to the ferry at Dover, they rebooked for a later ferry and went back for them. Not sure what excuse they made to their three teenage children 😳

What????

My husband forgot the portapotty one time when we went camping - DS was potty training at the time. Had to run to B&Q, bucket for us and then ToysRUs for a potty! It was the last time we went away in a tent - made him by a caravan with a permanent loo after that!

Why do you not wash the dogs food bowl immediately after they have eaten?

Kinda missing the point here….

Sweetleftfood · 27/05/2025 14:52

Forgetting make up bag. I did that last summer on a camping trip to France, forgot my make up bag in the first campsite on our journey south. I did think what a total disaster it would have been if I were younger. I was a bit pissed off of course as I had certain things I really liked which were either difficult to replace or discontinued. I did replace the whole bag with a mascara and a bb creme to last me for the holiday.

Not every dog wolfs their food down you know. And even if the op's dog does eat everything at once, she forgot. Understandable when you are busy packing to go on holiday. This is a thread about that. Not for being little miss superior judgy pants 😔

Yiayoula · 27/05/2025 14:55

This may be very outing, but the trousers of the suit my husband was to have worn for our daughter’s wedding in Cyprus 23 years ago .
I will never forget the moment of discovering they were missing ……..😱

Iloveanicegarden · 27/05/2025 14:57

On a 'trip of a lifetime' to NZ for a month. I discovered while on a stop over in LA that I had no underwear or nightwear. Overnight washes and subsequent drying was difficult due to timings of early morning departures.

At the risk of bringing down a lighthearted thread - my antidepressants. But it actually turned out to be a good thing, as once I was over the panic, I realised I could manage a few days without them, and it was the beginning of weaning myself off them.

DonnyDoris · 27/05/2025 15:00

We went on a camping trip with DP's adult children and their families - his DS left the tent at home, which somehow was my fault!! (in a funny way - we get on really well)

thatsalad · 27/05/2025 15:00

My glasses. I was blind af and got told off twice at the airport for going the wrong way!

Theyreeatingthedogs · 27/05/2025 15:02

Driving licence. Fly drive in USA. Lucky the person I was with brought their licence.

Ihopeyouhavent · 27/05/2025 15:02

Boys coats one December on the way to Centreparcs so had to stop off and buy new ones!

Following year forgot the swimbag and didnt realise until we got to Centreparcs and had to buy them there, awful choices, i ended up with a bright red suit with a frilly neckline. DH ended up cutting down a pair of tracksuit bottoms, very classy!

Hairbrush in a rural Spanish town, the only thing i could find resembling a brush with was a babies comb which i had to use to blow dry my long and curly hair straight!!

Ive done that as well, ended up buying those cheap one from boots, made me look like Harry Potter!!

ShiftySquirrel · 27/05/2025 15:04

The double buggy on a UK cottage holiday. At that point we had a 1 & 2 year old 🙈.

We ended up buying a really cheap single buggy.

skyeisthelimit · 27/05/2025 15:05

Mine was the other way round, I took my favourite sharp knife on holiday (self catering) because it was perfect for cutting cheese and fruit, and left it behind. I was sad Grin.

We then went on holiday to the same site 6 months later, in the same lodge and my knife was still there, so I took it home again.

DiscoZombie · 27/05/2025 15:06

I keep forgetting pyjamas. Lost count of the amount of days I've had to wonder around shops and try to find something!
Toiletries
Cables. I have so many because I've had to buy new ones

thatsalad · 27/05/2025 15:09

This wasn't me, but a friend forgot to bring ANY clothes once, I don't understand how she didn't notice her suitcase was extremely light. She bought some clothes on holiday, but was too tight to buy a swimsuit, so she ended up wearing a black bra and panties to the beach

Tigergirl80 · 27/05/2025 15:09

Ex left half eaten pasta in our rush to leave. When we got home it was furyy mouldy and stunk. Told him he could sort it I wasn’t.

Forgot my mirtazapine meds and Kalms once. For the 3 nights we were there I hardly slept. Now when we go away I do meds first and double check. DD is on a lot of meds. If we forget anything else we can buy it there.
