Names that would be pretty if they weren’t already other things

My daughter and I have been talking about names that would be beautiful if they weren’t already other things (mainly sparked by me saying that MacKenzie wouldn’t be a good name because it is a surname). So far she has suggested Cathedral, Fajita and Café. I have come up with Cellardoor.

What do you think?

Lachrymosa would be a wonderful name. Pity I never had a daughter...

Lachrymosa would be awesome

Fedora and Fenestra would be beautiful twins.

Isn't he a nickname/character in Silence of the Lambs?

Yes. Hannibal tells the FBI that the unsub is someone called William (Billy) Rubin.

I really like some of the first names used by many African people like Precious, Blessing and Sunday. I recently met a Ghanaian woman called Peace.
Scholastic is great.

There's someone at work called either moreprecious or moreblessing!

It could backfire if you were an unplanned baby though. No one wants to spend their life walking around being called Accident or Burden.

Mirena. Would have suited dd2, as she’s only around cos mine failed!!

Somehow, I don't think that would happen.

Mackenzie or Kenzie was popular in Scotland for ages it seems to have gone away again, anyway to answer your question Locket is nice word I think it be a lovely name

My DD has a boy called Miracle in her class at school which I think is beautiful.

When I was about 10 I was playing this computer game on my dad's PC called Babiez, where you adopted babies and looked after them. I called one baby Rubella because it sounded nice

Mounjaro and Wegovy. Slim twins

ElleneAsanto · 17/05/2025 14:13

I’ve heard of Bailey, Fisher, Fitzroy and Shannon.

Also a Cromarty (that was a dog, though).

Malan is already a Welsh girl’s name, so Malin would be fine.

Utsire sounds so much more exotic than a small, damp, rocky island off the West coast of Norway.

Dogger - mmm, probably not.

Which leaves -

Biscay
Dover
Faeroes
FairIsle
Fastnet
Forth
Forties
Hebrides
Humber
Lundy
Plymouth
Portland
Rockall
Sole
Thames
Trafalgar
Tyne
Viking
and Wight

Love some of the Victorian ones. Misery is a favourite.

Saw a great piece about the struggles of young people in rural Africa trying to get a decent education. One of the young men was called Scholastic: suited him so well.

I've met a Courage

Wren. It's a cheap kitchen range, not a girl's name.
Pandora. Don't open the box.
Delilah. Read the Bible story.
Lucifer. It is literally Satan.

I don't automatically think of kitchens when I hear the name Wren I think about the bird.

Was about to edit, as I remembered Tyne Daly from Cagney and Lacey.
