Names that would be pretty if they weren’t already other things

My daughter and I have been talking about names that would be beautiful if they weren’t already other things (mainly sparked by me saying that MacKenzie wouldn’t be a good name because it is a surname). So far she has suggested Cathedral, Fajita and Café. I have come up with Cellardoor.

What do you think?

Apricot.
Chiffon (possibly because it sounds a bit like Siobhan and Saffron which are names).
Organza (continuing the fabric theme).
Chevrolet.
Tuxedo.
Pergola.
Brassica.
Amitriptyline

I do know a Velvet and she's absolutely awesome and totally fits her unique name.

My husband and I each knew a Cherry in our youth. The one I knew was Cherry Peel (honestly).

Ahh Cellardoor, the most beautiful word in the English language according to Donnie Darko’s teacher.

Anaphylactic

Kath and Kim had some eclectic ideas for baby names.

Enema for a boy
Cardio Infarction for a boy (cos Kim likes Italian names!)
Catheter for a girl.
IV for a girl.

You get the idea.

Years ago when I was pregnant I had a laugh out loud moment when reading a comment on a thread here about the craziest things you had said to a stranger about your baby. The poster said she was in a new mum fog and someone asked her what her baby was called and out of nowhere said that her name was Spatula. Makes me giggle to this day!

Mansionscoldandgrey · 17/05/2025 13:27

Fallopian has a certain gravitas.

Vitrolinsanity · 17/05/2025 13:29

I think Pythagoras is due a comeback.
My ears may have deceived me, but I would swear Sara Cox gave a shout out to a child called Aragog yesterday.

Tarragon has a nice ring. Much snappier than Saffron.

Love some of the Victorian ones. Misery is a favourite.

Saw a great piece about the struggles of young people in rural Africa trying to get a decent education. One of the young men was called Scholastic: suited him so well.

I really like some of the first names used by many African people like Precious, Blessing and Sunday. I recently met a Ghanaian woman called Peace.
Scholastic is great.
