Love that from Jo White. She's spot on. It's not working class kids from Wigan who will benefit from it. The devil will be in the detail.

From loyalty to Starmer / Labour she’s probably softening the anger some will be feeling over this.

But raising it because she, like others, will worry about their jobs and votes.

Upstartled · 18/05/2025 19:29

The backbenchers are getting bolder. She was complaining bitterly in the wake of the council elections. She was talking to Tomminey a week ago saying that Starmer should come out to her constituency in Bassetlaw and, well basically, come and see how disconnected he is from the electorate.

At least she's representing her constituents. Some MPs seem to forget that that's their actual job.

Bassetlaw voted 67.8 leave, 32.2 remain.

She is, which is good. It’s very mixed message from Labour. Island of strangers on one hand for red wall then reset to go against them.

TheNuthatch · 18/05/2025 19:49

Yep, exactly.
I just checked her voting record. She has voted with the government throughout, including cutting WFA. Her constituents will know that too. I know they're whipped etc, but still.

Question posed by a commentator in the Telegraph today: Is Starmer a quisling?

Based on his performance to date, I think that's a reasonable question.

Upstartled · 18/05/2025 20:23

😬Bloody hell, quisling must be arse clenching close to slander unless, of course, they think they could support the truth of the claim.

TheNuthatch · 18/05/2025 20:25

If the word quisling is being used in the same way the far right would use it, I'll have no truck with that.

OP posts:
EasternStandard · 18/05/2025 20:26

I’ve not heard that word before, had to google

Full disclosure, I had to look it up half expecting it to be a character from Harry Potter 🫣- but it suggested that is was a term used Churchill and Orwell and assumed it was just out of use.

I don't know if it's been adopted by the far right. Surely the telegraph wouldn't have let that fall under the radar?

TheNuthatch · 18/05/2025 20:31

I won't repeat on here where and how I heard that word before, or how it's used.

@DancingFerret would you like to widen the context please before I assume the worst?

OP posts:
DancingFerret · 18/05/2025 20:39

It made me think, for sure. I suppose it depends on the context in which the question was posed; was the questioner referring to Western or Eastern Europe, and did he or she realise the different approaches to the word?

Either way, it's potentially libellous and I can't imagine any news outlet following that line; our current PM would waste no time in employing his legal training to sue the pants off them.

  • Edited for typo.

Are you aware that this word is used by the far right? I think you do know what this means. Nothing to do with East or West.
It fucking disgusts me and I don't want that bollocks on this thread. I hope that's clear enough.

This is the comment; no real context so it's impossible to know if the person making has any real understanding of the word:

"Just a thought, Is the toolmaker's son a Quisling, planted in the Labour party."

No I'm done.
Take your vile racist bullshit elsewhere.

I'm sorry to anyone reading who was offended by that. That is not what this thread is for, or about. Both post using racists slurs have been reported by me and will hopefully be deleted by MN.

Sorry

I am emphatically not a racist. My understanding has always been that a quisling is a traitor. I do realise, though, that in some parts of Europe the term is also misused in the way you have inferred I meant.

You are no longer welcome on this thread. I've had my suspicions for a while, and you've just confirmed my fears. Leave

Apologies to all. MN will not delete the messages above as the word also has other meanings. I'm so sorry, I have tried to put this right.

This is exactly why the far right use that word. It's cover for hate speech.

Sir Elton John described the government as "absolute losers" and said he feels "incredibly betrayed" over plans to exempt technology firms from copyright laws.

Speaking exclusively to Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, he said if ministers go ahead with plans to allow AI firms to use artists' content without paying, they would be "committing theft, thievery on a high scale".

This is concerning for creative industries.

He missed out the taxing (VAT) of Arts/drama schools too

Hello, I'm just bowing out of MN for a while. It's not a snub or flouncing - just a bit of a rest from the forum. Have a good summer xx
