Hello, I'm just bowing out of MN for a while. It's not a snub or flouncing - just a bit of a rest from the forum. Have a good summer xx

Sorry to hear this. I feel the same this morning if it's any comfort. The toxicity aimed at this thread and it's posters is becoming unbearable.
Have a lovely summer, and good luck to your dc in their exams. Hope to speak to you again soon. xxFlowers

Oh I haven’t seen that. Sounds typical. What a waste of their time.

@Upstartledtake care.

Anyway, what do we all think of this deal with the EU?
I don't think it will go down well re fishing. The original deal was seen as a bad deal for fishermen but it was due to expire in 2026. Labour have just agreed to extend it to 2038.

I think it’ll be interesting to see what happens politically and with votes. There’s a lot of annoyed people arm, not mn as much of course.

I've said that on the Labour voters page and got told it will be OK when they send a bit of charity handout crumbs to the Red Wall areas 🙄

I used to live in a fishing town and I can tell you that people are still incandescent about how the fishing industry was trashed.

That's why all the East coast ports voted "Out" by a country mile,

Labour are going to get a kicking every time a by-election comes up. The only thing we don't know is how bad that kicking is going to be !

I remember the backlash from those communities. This will be rather unpopular in Scotland aswell I would assume.

Ah yes, that old chestnut. We love a bit of charity up here. Especially lovely flower arrangements on roundabouts. They're really helpful in areas of high deprivation.

I think incandescent is a good word for the backlash out there, if not making it to on here.

I know. It’s hilarious. MN was more worried about losing their au pairs and cleaners as a result of Brexit than anything else.

I just knew Starmer would cave in to the EU over fishing rights. I think the EU will benefit more from the deals than us.

Out of touch with who ? Don’t worry. Tories are toast whatever. Hopefully we can shoot ourselves in the foot yet again, worked out so well last time. And obviously popularity v competence is far superior.

😂 pragmatism of the greatest order.
How did BoJo do ?

TheNuthatch · 19/05/2025 14:09

From a purely selfish perspective, I am really pleased about pet passports. The health certificates were a nightmare to sort out.

Not sure about the e gates. I haven't noticed longer queues for non EU gates, the opposite in fact. My ds travels around the continent a lot, and he always says the queue for EU passengers is longer than non EU.

Of course they will !

We were due to get ALL our fishing rights back next year and then after that the quotas would be have to be negotiated yearly.

Now our fishing waters will be plundered by EU trawlers including those awful Super Trawlers who scrape the sea bed of anything and everything. Our stocks will be decimated.

Key points in the deal:

  • Trade rules to be eased allowing more UK food exports but Britain will have to follow EU rules on food standards
  • Brits to be allowed to use eGates at airports in EU countries
  • EU trawlers allowed to fish in UK waters for 12 years
  • Defence and Security pact allowing Brit firms access to EU defence fund
  • Plans for ‘Youth Experience Scheme’ for young Brits to work on the continent
  • UK gets access to EU facial images data to help catch criminals

In return we get a load of unemployed youth from the EU, a potential 80 million of them - and then if that wasn't bad enough we are having to pay for all this !!

placemats · 19/05/2025 15:38

Energy UK has welcomed the deal. Lower energy prices.

Federation of Small Businesses welcomes the deal, 'real progress'.

Others such as the Food and Drink Federation and UK Hospitality agree this is positive.

There will be a vote in Parliament on the agrifoods deal and Starmer will not have to worry about the outcome of that vote, first PM in a decade to have the luxury of that.

Food will be cheaper and add £9bn to the economy.

Farage when an MEP attended 1 of the 42 fishery committee meetings.

I know @derxa from the other thread.

What is it about good news you don't like? @TheNuthatch

CinnamonSquirrel · 19/05/2025 15:57

What exactly do you want this thread to be @TheNuthatch? Is it simply a skewed doomfest? I totally agree with you telling the poster from yesterday to leave but asking someone today if they are on the wrong thread because they raise some positives from the EU deal. Really?
