Good luck. My DH is rooting for you as some of his friends are Palace supporters.

Just heard a shout from DH @dontcallmelen. I think he’s on your side too.

The island of strangers in context. Starmer's speech:

"Nations depend on rules - fair rules. Sometimes they're written down, often they are not, but either way, they give shape to our values.

They guide us towards our rights, of course, but also our responsibilities, the obligations we owe to one another. Now, in a diverse nation like ours, and I celebrate that, these rules become even more important. Without them, we risk becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks together."

I'm on board with all of this.

Yes.

it’s annoying me that one few words is being used totally out of context.

He was talking about embracing multiculturalism and being a community of shared values.

Not (as I understood it) saying immigration is a problem creating an island of strangers.

But I don’t understand why they’ve not come out and explained it or rebuked how’s it used.

Their comms remain shot and it’s a big problem for them.

Yes @placemats It’s been used cynically to suggest the opposite of what he said.
I am knackered today after doing 8.5 miles all uphill. Little pic of woodland which was nice. It’s all oak trees out here.

How beautiful cardi glad you’re having a good time.

They need a Campbell to do their media battling for them. A pencil-in-the-thigh-jabbing PR ballistic missile. It’s just feeding into the Corbyn-esque Never Explain vibe otherwise, which today’s Labour just cannot afford.

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2025 19:45

He also needs a new speech writer tbf.

I agree, Lead with do we WANT to be an island of strangers? or we have NEVER been an island of strangers. Emphasise the glorious mixture of cultures we’ve had over 3,000 years in terms that everyone can understand. I teach Yr3 about international trade ffs. How hard can it be?

Not half. You’re absolutely on the money @Saucery.

They should have a Devil's Advocate - who can look at anything they do / say / speech and think about how the Right Wing media would report it / spin it.

And then reflect to see if they can make changes or if they can live with any damaging headlines.

A kind of Sergeant Wilson "Are you sure this is wise, Sir"

Saucery · 17/05/2025 20:08

It annoys me. There’s a Game. They need to play it or they will lose and so will we. Too high and mighty to play that Game? Well then, you’ve just handed it to Reform <slow hand clap>. This is PR. Watch The Thick Of it if you’re not sure how it all works, you’re not above all that, seriously. What the actual fuck happened to wanting to improve the lives of people in your country? Play. The. Game.

Saucery · 17/05/2025 20:14

Exactly @cakeorwine ! I despair that they can’t get their message across. Fuck knows, Farage has managed it. The internet is a Thing. Come on, Labour, harness it.

BIossomtoes · 17/05/2025 20:17

The really irritating thing is that they were on fire during the election campaign. Their social media team was amazing.

Saucery · 17/05/2025 20:24

Agree to a point @BlossomToes but it they could have brought a potato peeler to that handbag fight and still won.

But they didn’t. Their comms were fantastic - and trust me, my standards are high! I’m having lunch tomorrow with friends who used to work in comms for DoH and the Transport department. I expect we’ll conclude they should bring the three of us out of retirement!
