Doesn’t sound odd to me.

But I think that’s because I experienced the same.

Grew up in city. Diversity pretty standard and none really played a credence to it.

Moved to suburbs - village - and people there did have an issue when there was very little diversity.

Mow in the suburban town the next stop along and my daughter of migrant parents MP is leading the charge against immigrants settling in our town. Again it was extremely white a decade ago.

Mh road is now wonderfully diverse with black African, Caribbean, Indian and Asian residents as well as various European backgrounds. It’s wonderful to exchange cultures and food and experiences and yet have a shared love of our area and share the same schools and shops etc .

If there aren’t many decent jobs or opportunities for advancement and a general air of decline pervades, that’s when tensions rise. I think it also depends upon how integrated communities are, how much poverty exists locally, levels of education. Chelsea probably has a very diverse population that is relatively harmonious but also incredibly prosperous. Contrast that with somewhere more deprived like Bolton or Burnley where people can be jealous if they perceive one community being treated more favourably. It’s like crabs in a bucket.

Emily Maitlis has got Lowe on today’s News Agents. I’ve only listened to a bit of it but it’s gold.

bombastix · 15/05/2025 20:55

Thanks for the recommendation @Blossomtoes

I am giving it a listen. Very slippery stuff

First day done - 8.5 miles. Pic of me being a pilgrim (from behind so not too identifying). It’s beautiful here but very hilly!

Fantastic @cardibach. I watched The Way with Martin Sheen recently. Lovely film.

BIossomtoes · 15/05/2025 21:49

You must be used to hills @cardibach! I do hope you’re enjoying it.

PickAChew · 15/05/2025 21:49

Gorgeous surroundings, @cardibach -i hope those feet are getting lots of rest.

Willowkins · 15/05/2025 22:05

I love the idea of pilgrimage. I've only managed to walk the 3 miles to my local cathedral so far but you've inspired me to do a longer one @cardibach.

PandoraSocks · 15/05/2025 22:59

Gorgeous @cardibach

LBC has a phone in at the moment on whether Reform is a cult. I wonder if it is beginning to finally dawn on LBC and its ilk that Farage would be a major disaster for the UK if he became PM and that endlessly promoting him is not a good move.

I have just listened. What a despicable human being he is. So patronising.

Notonthestairs · 16/05/2025 08:05

Yes, I listened to that this morning. Aside from referring to the employees that filed complaints as 'girls', he also seemed to blame any inconsistencies in his own story on the journalist asking the question rather than addressing the issue fully.

ReesMogg did similar with Lewis Goodall a while back. And of course Kari Lake employed the same tactic (albeit much more aggressively) last year.

A Ukranian national Roman Lavrynovych has been arrested and charged in connection with the arson attack on Starmer's rented house.

He will appear in court today and is charged with 3 counts of arson with intent to endanger life.

PandoraSocks · 16/05/2025 08:51

Yes, I heard the news last night when I was washing up. All over the news now, of course @2dogsandabudgie

Nice to see you. Haven't seen you on these threads for ages.

Eta: I am sure Farage, the Reformites and other Starmer haters will suddenly be concerned about the attack, rather than wishing more than Starmer's door was attacked (as on MNetter did).

Yes but interesting all the same because Lowe had some very specific ideas about Reform and what changes he wanted them to put forward. Which was basically repealing about 95 per cent on anti discrimination legislation, the HRA, racial and religious hatred laws, the stuff that underpins current society. That would basically be pre Blair.

Hr sounded utterly like a throw back a man of a certain era who has had a life where he had a guarantee that he would be taken account of, and conducted the interview that way. To modern ears he might sound barmy. But I thought it very familiar. He would have been in the Tory Party 30 years ago, no problem, and his views accepted.

SerendipityJane · 16/05/2025 09:50

Our mate Phil noted that Farage v. Lowe will be very interesting as Lowe has the money to fight on. There was also a suggestion that Zia Yusuf was put in place to be the fall guy

DuncinToffee · 16/05/2025 09:53

Starmer is taking a real beating in the polls 😬

He would do well to fire his advisors who seem to be focused on pleasing gbeebies viewers only

Yes, Lowe explicitly mentioned getting rid of equality legislation.
He seemed deeply nostalgic for the country as it had been when he was growing up. As if getting rid of legislation might mean the last 40-50 years could be dispensed with.

What's the latest, Duncin?

DuncinToffee · 16/05/2025 09:57

Lowe was involved with Southampton football club

The directors of Southampton FC across 1979 to 2019 failed systematically as an institution to act on sexual abuse, so facilitating its continuation to 2019. Lowe chair 1996-2006 when board failed to act (even discuss)

I’ve just finished the Lowe interview and my respect for Maitlis has grown even more. The patience needed for her technique of letting them bury themselves is a super power.

This comment on Bluesky is pretty accurate:

The thing is even then that was a country that only about 5% of the population lived in.
