@dontcallmelen I feel the same. On MN I used to quite enjoy arguing the political toss with posters with opposing views. But over the last couple of months or so the tone has changed and I don't want to engage with some of them any longer. There is an viciousness that is really disturbing and I really wonder about who they really are.

Eta:I am not talking about anyone on these threads BTW.

Asylum hotel companies vow to hand back some profits

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2jw9jg99jo

If only they could do that with excess PPE profits as well.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2025 20:59

Some good news:

MPs voted 104 to 402, majority 298 to reject the Conservatives’ motion which stated the Government should “put the national interest first and not to row back on Brexit, for example by re-introducing free movement through a EU youth mobility scheme”.

I think the PPE Medpro (Mone) investigation is up in court soon.

It’s a Visa scheme! Not freedom of movement!

Which makes this motion even more pathetic.

Desperate measures from the Tories.

BIossomtoes · 13/05/2025 21:13

Badenoch has vowed to reverse any measures that bring us closer to Europe as soon as she’s able to do it. When do we think that might be? 12th of never?

A vow is progress. Previously she was just thinking about stuff.

Now that is weird. Really weird. I wonder why. There has been some negative publicity but really?

bombastix · 13/05/2025 21:21

Legally compelled. This still weirder than a fish on a bicycle

And how does a visa Scheme threaten Brexit? Some Italian/French/German twenty somethings are going to wrestle us for sovereignty?

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2025 21:32

Fear that British young people realising what Brexit is preventing them from experiencing?

I may be a bit scarce for the next few weeks. I’m off tomorrow to do the last 111k of the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela. I’m fundraising for the Dogs’ Home. Not sure how good connectivity will be or how much time I’ll have for keeping up with politics and shit

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2025 21:34

Have a fantastic time cardi! And good luck with the fundraising

But then some don't want us to be closer to India either - it's a mystery as to what is wanted, barring the obvious suspects wanting either empire days or being a 51st state of the US.
It is just absolutely ridiculous raising a vote against anything Europe - they're fine when on 'our side' with Ukraine - they're our neighbours and allies.

I’m deeply envious. I hope you have an amazing time and return zen and uplifted.

cardibach · 13/05/2025 21:48

Me too @BIossomtoes
Rather than knackered with a sore knee!
I’m really looking forward to the process but also we are aiming to arrive at the Cathedral in time for Pilgrim’s Mass on our last walking day and I feel that could be emotional.

Zonder · 13/05/2025 22:18

Have an amazing time @cardibach I would love to do that.
