I'm willing to bet that the Lammy hate is about his stance on gender. Because if he's wrong about that, he must be wrong on absolutely everything else he does. Fortunately most of us on here are a little more nuanced in our thinking.

I detest his stance on gender, but I appreciate his strengths in other areas. But then I can take in a whole person and give credit where it’s due. It’s a shame others can’t do that.

DuncinToffee · 10/05/2025 20:02

State school, not quite Eton

If Kwasi Kwarteng had been a key role in a cease fire, why wouldn't we have praised him

Instead he crashed the economy alongside Truss

If Kwasi Kwarteng had been instrumental in this ceasefire, I absolutely would be praising him. Hell, even if Nigel Farage had been instrumental in this ceasefire I would be praising him.

So why can't we acknowledge Lammy's contribution without sniping about him?

And hilariously we are the ones who get accused of being tribal in our politics. You couldn't make it up.

He’s a pretty good Foreign Secretary. I think you have to be quietly tough but surface emollient and he appears to have mastered that.

I totally agree 👍

Rummly · 10/05/2025 20:18

It’s not really what you’d usually refer to as a state school. It’s one of three CofE cathedral choir schools.

And I can certainly see why Kwarteng is derided by many. That was my point.

I fail to see what David Lammy’s achievements are. So far he’s played no part in anything international that I can recall. It’s all been Starmer. We don’t even know what he did for this ceasefire. Pakistan has also praised the US, apparently.

And he’s said some very stupid things. There was the Papal election, Mastermind and, yes, cervix growing.

So why the high opinion of him?

placemats · 10/05/2025 20:19

It's a great start and much appreciated. Now what other state has nuclear weapons? That would be Israel. However it's now an ultra right country and I do despair as do all of my friends who are Jewish, UK born.

Is that how we’re rating people in the public eye? John Finnemore is a pure comic genius but he was woefully bad on the ghost stories of M.R. James.
On the other hand, Boris Johnson was always quite personable on HIGNFY, so go figure.

Piggywaspushed · 10/05/2025 20:35

If a school is free of charge and state funded , it is indeed what one 'would normally refer to as a state school'.

Saucery · 10/05/2025 20:36

Is it news to @Rummly that state schools vary enormously? How odd.

Totally.

I find it frustrating when credit can’t be given because of who someone supports or who they are.

Both in politics and just generally in everyday life.

If someone does some good they should be credited with that.

placemats · 10/05/2025 21:05

No one, not even Lammy believes that you can grow a cervix @Rummly and you of course are being silly, to quote Richard Tice who loves to use that word.

Saucery · 10/05/2025 21:10

No one is claiming that David Lammy strode in and negotiated a ceasefire on his own. However, as part of a united diplomatic effort, the UK government still holds some weight. Fuck knows how long that will last with the way things are going, but for now, he’s played a part and credit to him for that.

I don’t know how John Finnemore got on. Was it on a par with:

What was the married name of the scientists Marie and Pierre who won the Nobel prize for physics in 1903 for their research into radiation?

Lammy: ”Antoinette

Who acceded to the English throne on the death of his father Henry VIII in 1547”?

Lammy: “Henry VII

Which variety of blue English cheese traditionally accompanies port?

Lammy: “Red Leicester

(He also thought the Palace of Versailles was a prison.)

Comedy gold.

I notice that nobody has come up with any other praiseworthy Lammy activity since he’s been Foreign Secretary. And we still don’t know what his role was in the ceasefire (though I saw that a poster used the word ‘instrumental’ - did Pakistan use that description?)

Edited

Lammy doesn’t think a man can grow a cervix? Not using the word “grow” is a distinction without a difference:

Is it transphobic to say only women have a cervix, David?"

I don't know if it's transphobic, but it it's not, accurate, Nick. I mean, obviously, it's probably the case that only, that trans women don't have ovaries. But a cervix, I understand, is something that you can have, following various procedures and hormone treatment and all the rest of it.

So your evidence that he is not competent is that he isn't good at trivia quizzes. Well, that's not shallow at all.

When and where did this conversation take place?

Why would I take your word for granted?

On LBC.

You don’t have to take my word, or anyone else’s, for granted. But it might be as well to do some checking yourself before you get arsey.

Arsy? You are a sensitive person.

Yes, I’m easily bruised.

Do you accept that David Lammy said what I quoted, and do you agree with what he said?

Most importantly, was what he said - in an interview, on broadcast media, about a topical issue - the sensible response of a clued-up person and able politician?

ilovesooty · 10/05/2025 23:04

The benefit bashing is becoming acutely depressing. So many posters are just horrible.

Little Tennyson not only showed me up at the vets last week but has caught and murdered 5 mice in the last four days.
