And his behaviour at the vets makes me feel like a bad cat parent!

I don’t think Conservative voters are in any position to get sniffy about ministers given the “talent” they’ve been willing to put their faith in over the last decade.

There are plenty of Tories who could be shamed or ridiculed for their stupid words. Over the last ten years, or even the last fifty years. But they’re not in government now. Labour is.

“But Boris…”

And being out of Government doesn’t wipe the slate clean.

Any chance of borrowing Tennyson @ilovesooty? How you can have a mouse problem in the same house as two Jack Russells is beyond me but here we are.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/05/2025 07:55

Kudos to Tennyson for top catting.

If only our politicians were that effective at doing what they should be doing...

I don’t know how John Finnemore got on. Was it on a par with:

What was the married name of the scientists Marie and Pierre who won the Nobel prize for physics in 1903 for their research into radiation?

Lammy: ”Antoinette

Who acceded to the English throne on the death of his father Henry VIII in 1547”?

Lammy: “Henry VII

Which variety of blue English cheese traditionally accompanies port?

Lammy: “Red Leicester

(He also thought the Palace of Versailles was a prison.)

Comedy gold.

I notice that nobody has come up with any other praiseworthy Lammy activity since he’s been Foreign Secretary. And we still don’t know what his role was in the ceasefire (though I saw that a poster used the word ‘instrumental’ - did Pakistan use that description?)

TBH Some of his answers are not good at all BUT it was Celebrity MasterMind and were his answers meant to be serious or to entertain?

I mean the Henry 8th question, you really think he genuinely thought Henry 7th acceded?

... have you been on Mastermind?

As the UK tends to do its diplomacy behind the scenes and not on Truth Social, we wouldn't really know what he or the UK does would we?

I think dragging up - non serious - stuff from 6 years ago, is scrapping the barrel.

Zonder · 11/05/2025 08:01

Just catching up. It's quite funny that some people try to present us on here as Starmer fans who can't see anything wrong in him. Compare that to some people who can't see anything good in someone who has just been praised for being part of something quite amazing.

Yeah but we are the ones who can only see one way.

Perhaps the JRTs need to be put on a performance improvement plan 😂

Tennyson amazes me. He was born in rescue, has never been taught to hunt, and is not just a cat. He is Cat the Ripper.

I think we’ll just have to disagree about that. I don’t think David Lammy was doing a comic turn. Have a look at the footage on YouTube.

But, anyway, if you want to excuse his Mastermind answers, what about his comments to LBC?

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2025 08:18

Every time I watch that show and Celebrity UC, I am astonished by how bad nearly all of them are. As people always tell me, a quiz fiend, general knowledge and doing well in quizzes is not the same as intelligence. On any quiz, celebrity or otherwise, contestants always say they do fine at home and the studio pressure gets to them. Can you tell me how anyone else has done on that show?

There have been politicians, historians, Shakespearean actors, academics, newsreaders on that show foundering, panicking and generally being rather rubbish.

If he had gone on there and done brilliantly you'd still not view him or anything he does positively - you'd probably either dismiss the relevance or call him a know it all. This just gives you something to sneer at.

I have got nowhere very spectacular in life by being good at quizzes - 'too clever by half ',you see.

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2025 08:29

In fact, having just checked a few things, Lammy actually came second. Is that often acknowledged in amongst the derision? If we are going to whatabout , this is higher than most politicians who have appeared and higher than the very clever Andrew Neil the following week who came last. It's a show for charity for goodness sake which is meant to be the point. I think we should save contempt for Nadine Dorries when it comes to politicians and TV appearances, to be frank.

And it was in 2008.

Zonder · 11/05/2025 08:32

That's fascinating @Piggywaspushed

Couldn’t agree more about Nadine Dorries, though I hesitate to criticise a working class woman just in case I get the sort of reaction that criticism of Angela Rayner generates among her fans.

Lammy’s placing is really not the point. It’s the nature of his answers.

The point appears to be whatever criterion provides the best opportunity to pour derision on him.

LittleBowSheep · 11/05/2025 09:17

Rummly · 10/05/2025 18:04

Anyone could do anything better than Lammy.

For being better than Lammy at ceasefire negotiations I nominate…Sheila Wiggins from Lowestoft.

What a ridiculous thing to say.

I really do find it quite worrying that you just can't see any good in what he has achieved because of a few daft answers on Mastermind. You come across as very blinkered in your views, every time.

It's so boringly predictable.

Well clearly the answers of very many others on that show were considerably worse - but you aren't sneering about them. Basically David Lammy could invent nuclear cold fusion and bring about world peace and you'd still not have a good thing to say about him.

DuncinToffee · 11/05/2025 09:25

FFS is this Rummly hates Lammy still ongoing Confused

Another FFS is that Labour are planning to close the care worker visa for overseas recruitment (Cooper on Sky News)

No. If he does those things I’ll stand up and clap him. (I’d clap Nadine Dorries if she did those, too, but I think I can safely stay in my seat for now.)

How do you know others answers were ‘worse’? A pass or a near miss is nothing like an answer that Marie Antoinette won the Nobel prize for physics in 1903.

PandoraSocks · 11/05/2025 09:27

I wonder if a thread full of men discussing political issues would attract the epithet "fans".

Anyway, the burning question of the day for me is what did little Tennyson do at the vets @Ilovesooty ?

Tbf to him that’s a near miss though. I’ve gone to say one word - started it right and ended it wrong - many times.

Even harder if you’re under pressure.

Im not going to judge his political competence based on a quiz show - I’ll judge it on his political competence.

Yesterday he did something politically competent - therefore - for that - I’ll judge him positively.

pointythings · 11/05/2025 09:59

I've been on The Weakest Link. It was fun, but under those lights and in front of those cameras, it's stressful. And yes, I said a couple of things that absolutely didn't come out right (hence I didn't win).

Have you never in a blind panic misheard questions and latched on to the one word you heard? There are actually feasible explanations for all of his answers.

He didn't do the 'pass, pass , pass' panic and gave answers.

I watch the programme (unlike you, I suspect). He is nowhere near the worst contestant they have ever had (in a politicians line up, Diane Abbott was pretty competent and Gyles Brandreth stank the place out).
