Of course. But critics will not be able to name anyone who could have done it better.

Anyone could do anything better than Lammy.

For being better than Lammy at ceasefire negotiations I nominate…Sheila Wiggins from Lowestoft.

Saucery · 10/05/2025 18:07

I love your posts @Rummly . It’s like the arrival of the comic turn in a slightly decrepit provincial club. I’m sure you’d raise the roof in some places here in Lancashire atm. #parchedpeasandapint

It's the economy, stupid.

Get the economy going - look at a good EU deal and try to take steps to revitalise communities.

Make sure people are aware of what Reform want to do to worker's rights. Does Reform want to take your annual leave away? Maternty Leave rights.

Where will the spending cuts come from Reform? What do they want to cut and how will that impact real people.

Farage is a good communicator. Very good at expressing problems.

I would also look at real reform. Reform the voting system. Farage was whinging about it being unfair so do some radical reform.

And be radical. They have a massive majority - and the media are going to whinge whatever they do. Be bold.

Look at pensioners - we have a lot of well off pensioners and a lot of much poorer pensioners. There is scope for change there.

And make steps to improve people's lives - I've seen the run down areas of the North and I can see why people are disillusioned. Life is expensive for many people who don't have much - and others are doing fine thankyou.

It's not difficult. But they have to be rebuilders of a broken Britain.

I agree, but it won't happen.

Happy to oblige.

Why, when he’s clearly done something good?

That David Lammy right….. [pause for jeers and booing]…..that David Lammy, I tell you…..[smirk]……
You know the rest, unfortunately Sad

I don’t think anyone does know the rest. I certainly don’t. What’s the rest? And why is it ‘unfortunate’?

DuncinToffee · 10/05/2025 18:38

Maybe ask Sheila

Maybe ask Sheila

Why, is ‘Sheila Wiggins’ Saucery’s real name?

DuncinToffee · 10/05/2025 18:45

The UK Foreign Secretary receives praise for playing a key role in the cease fire, there is no need for critcism.

Omg, how dare you Out me on here! Grin

cardibach · 10/05/2025 18:57

@Rummly nobody is saying you have to turn into his no1 fan, but credit where it’s due, surely? Otherwise it looks like being unthinkingly critical.

Edited

Surely not? That would never happen.

Saucery · 10/05/2025 19:04

Anyway, never mind Rummly and her ruffled shirt and comb-over, Steve Bannon just slagged off the Pope. Place your bets as to how much that will trouble the Vatican.

Rummly · 10/05/2025 19:16

Oh well, we’ll never find out what ‘the rest’ was. Or why it was ‘unfortunate’.

I’m never unthinking, I’ll have you know. Every word of mine is a polished gemstone. Every opinion a sumptuous Akoya pearl.

If Lammy helped to secure a ceasefire then good. But that doesn’t stop him being a talentless fool.

BIossomtoes · 10/05/2025 19:19

I think it’s a pretty clear indication that he’s not. But then I’ve always been quite keen on following the evidence.

DuncinToffee · 10/05/2025 19:35

European unity, incl the UK

Amidst much darkness in the news, the warmth that European nations have shown each other and Ukraine has been a true bright spot. There seems to be real rapport between the leaders. NYT reporting that Macron & Zelensky in particular have become close friends. Some scenes from today.

@Rummly The sort of "fool" who just happens to have been the first black Briton to attend Harvard Law school?
A friend to President Obama and a very experienced politician.
I can't imagine how many obstacles he must have had to overcome to get to where he is today.

pointythings · 10/05/2025 19:44

I'm willing to bet that the Lammy hate is about his stance on gender. Because if he's wrong about that, he must be wrong on absolutely everything else he does. Fortunately most of us on here are a little more nuanced in our thinking.

Saucery · 10/05/2025 17:55

He’s a pretty good Foreign Secretary. I think you have to be quietly tough but surface emollient and he appears to have mastered that.

I always think he comes across well too.

certainly one of the strongest FS we’ve had the past few decades and boy do we need that right now!

Rummly · 10/05/2025 19:48

David Lammy went to SOAS and did a masters at Harvard.

Kwasi Kwarteng went to Trinity, Cambridge. He was the first black Chancellor of the Exchequer. Are you a fan of Kwarteng?

LlynTegid · 10/05/2025 17:55

A great uncle was a WW2 submarine commander, who died at sea and is remembered on the Portsmouth War Memorial. Went there for the 11 November commemoration three years ago, found his name.

I’m down there tomorrow.

Living in a naval area is always such a start reminder of those who sacrificed themselves for our freedoms.

I’ve listened to him a lot recently since he’s left government and have warmed to him. He’s actually got a cracking sense of humour in his delivery.

I think a lot of politicians are different people to who they are as politicians.

Sad (and you’re probably not surprised) to report Braverman is not!

Piggywaspushed · 10/05/2025 19:56

Kwasi Kwarteng also went to Eton.

Lammy is an Old Petriburgian.
