Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

I find this whole argument bizzare. To show respect a state sends a senior representative(s) to pay respects on behalf of the country. Job done.

Did the pope attend the queen's funeral? No. Did the Vatican send someone to the queen's funeral to represent it? Yes. Was anyone offended? No

It is just looking for things to be annoyed about.

Completely agree with you.
Trump's blue suit was not appreciated by the Italian press this morning.

It looks much darker in t( dim lighting inside than it did outside too. Here’s a pic of him falling asleep in it during the funeral (or maybe just before).

My understanding is that the British Monarch, in the past, would never have attended any funeral because it allowed ordinary people to imagine the death of the king. At one point, even to talk about a king dying one day could be considered treason.

This has been relaxed now but I am not surprised that the king didn’t go to the funeral.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 27/04/2025 11:41

But that doesn't explain why they don't go to funerals of any heads of state abroad.

Actually, the Late Queen only went to the funerals of family and friends. As far as I know, she attended two state funerals - Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. I think it was the same for weddings too. Probably something to do with not being more important than the principals.

I think it's a really old tradition. Henry VIII didn't attend his children's christenings so that they (the children) were the most important people attending.

Sunholidays · 27/04/2025 14:09

The Queen attended King Baldwin’s funeral in 1993 in Brussels if I remember correctly

They should be crossed with the pallbearers too, then

I read English and had never come across the word consubstantial 🤣

It’s a bit like those made up words in primary school for grammar … like fronted adverbial

I love “with thy spirit” and the “welcome under my roof” but some of the Creed just doesn’t flow imo

Agree. I dont see the problem with 'Of one being with the Spirit'. What does 'Consubstantial' mean if it doesnt mean that? Its always the part I forget and then it throws me off the whole thing!

Rather arrogant to believe she would be more important than any other head of state at the funeral of a head of state.

That's a shame that you have misunderstood what that post meant.

The pallbearers were wearing their uniforms, those of the Pope's Gentlemen, an unpaid voluntary position, just as eg the Cardinals were wearing what is effectively theirs.

Yes, they were wearing blue uniforms.

She did, Sunholidays. I believe it was the only foreign state funeral she attended. Here’s a picture of her and Phillip at the funeral.

(as an aside, that was a rare faux pas by Phillip - he or his valet clearly packed the wrong order! He should have been wearing the fuchsia pink sash that King Carl Gustav of Sweden is wearing on the other side of the Queen. But instead he wore a random order from Zaire, as it was then. The Order of the Leopard rather than the Order of Leopold. I can only imagine what internet commentators would make of such a mistake today… 🤣 )

The poster stated "Probably something to do with not being more important than the principals" as a reason for not attending funerals/weddings in response to me question as to why she didn't go to the funerals of heads of state abroad.

Not really open to misunderstanding.

Omg best typo ever! 😅

Yes, they were wearing blue uniforms.

You don’t see the difference between uniforms that happen to be blue and a choice? Do you think they should also be cross with the cardinals for wearing red?
Edited for clarity re the poster’s opinions.

Edited

I think that if the protocol allowed for uniforms and suits in dark colours other than black, then dark blue is fine.

Trump and Biden made a mistake with their ties, though. They should have been black.

Then he's probably turning in his office chair... or maybe his pew if he's attending the service.

I'm trying to decide whether you intended to be offensive or you thought you were being funny.🤔

Agreed. I went to a papal mass and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral choir were there. It was obvious that they were so much better than the Vatican choir. Both interns of sound and professionalism and behaviour.

So much judgement on here.

The choir weren't good enough
Suits were the wrong colour
Faces were the wrong colour
Too much pomp
Not enough women
Pall bearers not as good as the Queens.

I'm waiting for people to start giving out scores out of ten.

Horse and carriage would have been a lot more dignified than the golf cart. Got to get that in, too.

I was referring to the norwegian king so there wouldn't be much point. However, apparently he is too frail to travel generally so fair enough him not attending.

They probably have his address so could forward it.

After Mass today, we were chatting about the Pope's funeral. The consensus was how appropriately his requiem Mass and simple wooden coffin reflected an unpretentious Pope who cared for the poor and the disadvantaged. There is a beauty and steadfastness to the ritual and blessings of a requiem Mass that is very comforting to the bereaved.

Absolutely. There is nothing wrong with commenting on the quality of the choir. And I remember thinking at Benedict XVI’s funeral that the HMQ’s pall bearers were much better.
