Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

After Mass today, we were chatting about the Pope's funeral. The consensus was how appropriately his requiem Mass and simple wooden coffin reflected an unpretentious Pope who cared for the poor and the disadvantaged. There is a beauty and steadfastness to the ritual and blessings of a requiem Mass that is very comforting to the bereaved.

Yes I agree. Some PP are commenting on the "pomp", but in fact there was very little. It was simple and yet beautiful.

Absolutely. There is nothing wrong with commenting on the quality of the choir. And I remember thinking at Benedict XVI’s funeral that the HMQ’s pall bearers were much better.

We don't all think the same, personally I think it is a bit weird. It was a funeral not a talent contest.

Uricon2 · 27/04/2025 16:21

I actually think the Papal Gentleman did a good job, they don't have the same training as pallbearer Guards and are not all fit, height matched young blokes.

This reminds me of a wonderful quote of St John 23rd. Shortly after his election as Pope he walked past a woman who said "My God, he's so fat".

He apparently smiled and said "Madam, the Holy Conclave is hardly a beauty contest!"

I think Pope John XXIII was a wonderful Pope but it might be because he was the first Pope I remember being elected. I can imagine him saying that, he was also a very down to earth Pope.

I am told my (very Protestant indeed) grandmother cried when he died, everyone was flabbergasted. I think he was special and humble, in the way Pope Francis was, also going out to interact with people, including those in prison.

Yes two very special men.

My memory is letting me down. I bet there's other stuff that just wasn't good enough for some.

The paper the ?homily - or something else - was on blew in the wind. A nice binder would have been better.

Too much Latin, not enough Latin, too much translation, couldn't understand the words . . .

I think that if the protocol allowed for uniforms and suits in dark colours other than black, then dark blue is fine.

Trump and Biden made a mistake with their ties, though. They should have been black.

So since protocol allowed for cardinals in red, everyone else should have been ok to wear red then?

You're not really getting this, are you? 🤔

I was thinking that as well.
Do you think it was a choice to wear that colour?

Of course it was. Typical dump Narcissistic behaviour . Look at me look at me
He's an embarrassment to the human race not just america

Bit strange you can't understand the difference between a uniform and a civilian's clothes.

But they didn't have to 'guess' what was or wasn't appropriate, they were advised to wear a "dark coloured suit and a long black tie".
Black, dark grey, and navy would fit in to those parameters. The bright blue of Trump's suit didn't. Nor did his blue tie.

I suspect the Vatican never thought to tell invitees not to sit playing on their phones during the service, which Trump did.
I suspect the Vatican never thought to have to tell anyone not to get some gum out and start chewing during the service, again, which Trump did.
But the did tell them what to wear, and Trump apparently decided it didn't apply to him.

Rather arrogant to believe she would be more important than any other head of state at the funeral of a head of state.

Arrogant or not, the press would have focused on her attendance and not on the occasion.

Me too. If there’s two institutions that can do pomp and ceremony like no others, it’s the Catholic Church and British Royal Family.

Why on earth would they have focused on her attendance over any other head of state? British tabloid media might have but I doubt any of the rest would.

Good lord. That's appalling. It would have been more respectful to send a sub. Even worse given his wife is a practicising catholic.

He was also the first Pope to visit England.
He did a service at Wembley Stadium and I was lucky to be one of the banner carriers.
I still have a piece of wax from his Altar.

I was fascinated at the sign of the peace as he didn't offer his hand to anyone. Everyone else around and behind him was giving the sign of the peace. It felt like an age with the camera on him and him doing nothing, it looked pretty bad actually.
Now I know he's not a Catholic, I'm not sure what denomination he is or if he goes to church or if they have the sign of peace, but surely he could have seen what others were doing and copied.
Thank goodness Melania was there as she whispered something to him, he nodded, she whispered something else and then he started offering the sign of peace to the people who were near him included Macron.

I don't know what is wrong with him. I didn't see him chewing gum or playing with his phone. There's no excuse for that. Completely disrespectful and he would surely have known cameras would be on him. The lack of black tie is disrespectful too, that was clearly stated in the Vatican dress code. The colour of the suit was a bad choice too but I could see my way to letting him off with that one because it did say a "dark suit" and he might have thought it was ok, or it looked darker indoors.

Also, you'd think that he'd have someone sensible advising him on the etiquette of these things beforehand and also give him a bit of information about a Catholic Mass so he at least knew what to expect and how to react at things like the sign of peace.

NewAgeNewMe · 27/04/2025 21:00

He probably doesn’t care.

Just watched the film ‘Conclave’. Interesting to see it portrayed Hollywood style.

Trump’s blue suit looks very out of place.

He definitely is making a statement ..... 'look at me .....'
