Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

The Vatican's requested dress code was a black suit with a black tie so Trump deliberately contravened this out of pure arrogance. He truly is a despicable despot.

The code was dark suit for men, black dresses for women.

Yes, my dad (Catholic) used to say that only protestants dressed up to go to church.

This is a revelation to me, thank you!

I thought everyone had the 'Sunday best' dress code.

The pomp, the costumes, the idolatry, the expense...
Jesus must be turning in his grave.

What grave?

The place where his corporeal remains are laid to rest.

When I went to mass this Easter I noticed several people kneeling and taking communion by mouth. I asked a friend at church who goes all the time (a convert btw) and is au courant what that was all about and she rolled her eyes and said oh it’s soo pious. Soo pious. 😂

Please, what do you mean by 'taking communion by mouth'?

As an Anglican I was taught to hold out my hands to receive the wafer and then to raise my hands a bit and lower my head a bit so that I took the wafer into my mouth. Then the priest brought the chalice and I sipped a little sip of wine. Aids and Covid have made for different things happening from what I was first taught. Always we knelt at the rail but more recently we stand.

Igneococcus · 26/04/2025 19:01

The place where his corporeal remains are laid to rest.

Well, Christians believe that he isn't there anymore. It's somehow the entire point of Christian belief.

Taytocrisps · 26/04/2025 19:05

@upinaballoon taking communion by mouth means that the priest places the communion wafer directly onto your tongue (you stick out your tongue). At some point it went out of favour/fashion and people started receiving the communion wafer onto their hand instead. You place your right hand under your left hand and the priest places the communion wafer onto your left hand. Then you use your right hand to place the wafer into your mouth.

There is no such place.

The Resurrection !

Do you think Trump is looking at this and seeing if he can plan a "Biglier" funeral for when he goes?

I was thinking the same. Narcissism is the name of his game.

LovePeriodProperty · 26/04/2025 19:09

Thankyou @Igneococcus
Exactly.
It’s called the Resurrection which we commemorate on Easter Monday. That’s why there’s a bank holiday here in the UK

I am not watching the funeral simply because I do not like the attitude of the Catholic Church. My father was raised in a strict Catholic family and he got married and he divorced. When he met my mother and they wanted to get married he was told that he could not get married in a Catholic Church because my mother was not Catholic and Catholic Church do not recognise second marriages as properly married so according to the Catholic church my parents are not married.

The other thing I do not like is the fact that unless you are a Catholic you cannot take holy communion inside the Catholic church and I totally disagree with this because other churches allow you to take holy communion regardless. My father eventually left the Catholic church and never went back so no I am not watching the Pope's funeral obviously I am sorry that he's died as I would be sorry if any elderly person died but I am not going to sit and watch the funeral led by Catholic leaders who has this kind of attitude sorry no

This is a thread about the funeral of the Pope.
Theres probably another thread where this might be appropriate …. It’s not this one!

Seeing as Our Lord rose on the 3rd day, 2000+ years ago he won't have any "corporal remains" !
Please try to keep up !

Im guessing you meant it for the previous poster.

In which case please please ignore my take down of you later 🥴
I thought you were laughing at the idea of the Resurrection

My comment was aimed at the person who mentioned our Lord's Corporal remains, which as you say don't exist.

If it upsets you so much I'll remove it.

BoldRed · 26/04/2025 19:48

Trump’s suit isn’t the problem, it’s his giant, shiny, pale blue tie. The Vatican asked for black tie - perfectly normal, respectful wear for any funeral and that oaf thought ‘nobody tells me what to do’. He looked as if he was off to a totally different event than Melania.

I’ve just realised that.
See my last post.

I think the problem is we’re being trolled by Christian haters again.

Dont worry.

Are the only real differences between Anglican and Catholic is one (Catholic) believes in the Virgin Mary as mother of God, together with the Pope as head of the church and saints , but the other (Anglican - Protestant) do not?

I've been in many Anglican churches and they looked just like Catholic churches to me. But I am a heathen so I don't know.

Igneococcus · 26/04/2025 19:49

@Flightofthegeese @LovePeriodProperty guys, you're on the same side.

It's complex and maybe this thread isn't the best place to discuss it.

Perhaps start another thread ?

There's a pretty big difference wrt communion. Catholics believe in transubstaniation where the bread and wine become the body and blood of christ whereas protestants believe communion is commemorating christ's sacrifice.

Protestant churches tend to be more austere but anglican less so than other protestant churches.

One massive difference I've noticed between anglican and catholic churches is the militaristic commemorations/memorials in anglican ones.

Aizen · 26/04/2025 19:57

Apologies everyone, I agree that my post was out of context today. It was just that I saw a comment about "Sunday Best" re Anglican services as being different to other religions, together with other references to a difference between Catholic and Protestant (Anglican?).

I thought the Pope's funeral today was all it should be for a Head of the Catholic Church and the Head of the Vatican city. May he rest in peace now.
