Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

That's because William was in RAF uniform.

His suit looks fine for a funeral

And his skin colour isn't exactly in the normal range for people.

Unless they are oompa loompas of course.

Wearing a black tie with a suit to a funeral is usual, even if the suit is not black. It looks like he and Melania are headed to 2 totally different occasions.

My ordinary view would be it doesn't matter, being there matters, not everyone can afford new clothes (etc) but in his case, there is no possible reason other than he didn't want to.

Yes, I thought he looked very smart and appropriate.

Yes, I agree. Every time something happens.
I'm a church musician and somebody cocks something up every single time.
Sometimes priests will accidentally miss out a bit of a service or add an extra bit, nearly giving me a heart attack while I try to work out what to do next. Sometimes they'll realize they missed a bit out and go back and add it in.

One church I play in gets the same thing wrong, year in and year out, at a particular Mass that happens once a year. Every year I point it out to them before the Mass when we are planning. Every year they say yeah, yeah, that won't happen again. Every year, same mistake. They know it's wrong too but next year, same thing.

Sometimes a priest will randomly start singing a part of the Mass when it was supposed to be the choir or vice versa, wait and wait for the choir to start when he was supposed to be singing it.

It's amazing that the music went so well!

Happens in Anglican churches too. They don't half keep us on our toes! (Another organist) 😁

Wasn't Charles and Camilla's wedding postponed because he had to attend a papal funeral? John Paul II, I think.

Yes. He attended as the Queen's representative. The funeral of John Paul II was the same date as originally planned for Charles and Camilla's wedding.

Well I think he never knew about the churches of many denominations which came after him, but of course, if he is God then he is omnipotent.
The only bit I could find was the episode with the money changers in the Temple, which I assume was a synagogue.

Apparently omnipotent omnipresent omniscient.
And he said, I paraphrase, do not construct special buildings or wear special clothes or worship other beings or artifacts. Where two or more people are gathered in my name then that is a church. A simple roughly hewn stone will serve as an alter and a place to gather.
Jesus, his Dad and his holy ghost would not approve of all this 'stuff'.

The Temple was a huge religious complex in Jerusalem, covering more than 36 acres. It was the central focus for ritual animal sacrifice (which was why money was changed - the creatures for sacrifice couldn't be paid for with ordinary coinage) but also for teaching, learning, debating or more than 500 years. It was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD - one of the pivotal events in world history - and much of the sacred contents taken back to Jerusalem in triumph.

Jesus ended the animal sacrifices for his followers, the Romans ended them for everyone else.

I took this photo from the Irish Times. It is a perfectly suitable shade of blue for a funeral. It's not navy but it's a dark blue. I've also added william from the Belfast telegraph. There isn't a huge difference in shade. Trump's is marginally lighter but there isn't much in it.

Trump is a gobshite but I think this is really looking for something to criticise.

Edited

The only reason I knew it wasn’t black was the degree to which it stood out against everyone else. I wasn’t ‘looking’. I try to avoid even seeing him.

I assume that is your PM's wife? No idea what she looks like.

Yes. I know all this.
Thank you.

Then why did you say you assumed it was a synagogue, a completely different thing?

PerkyOchrePeer · 26/04/2025 17:42

I am not watching the funeral simply because I do not like the attitude of the Catholic Church. My father was raised in a strict Catholic family and he got married and he divorced. When he met my mother and they wanted to get married he was told that he could not get married in a Catholic Church because my mother was not Catholic and Catholic Church do not recognise second marriages as properly married so according to the Catholic church my parents are not married.

The other thing I do not like is the fact that unless you are a Catholic you cannot take holy communion inside the Catholic church and I totally disagree with this because other churches allow you to take holy communion regardless. My father eventually left the Catholic church and never went back so no I am not watching the Pope's funeral obviously I am sorry that he's died as I would be sorry if any elderly person died but I am not going to sit and watch the funeral led by Catholic leaders who has this kind of attitude sorry no

Not sure if it was a choice to stand out, or a refusal to embrace societal norms through arrogance.

Likely both. Perhaps he hadn't got as good a spot as he thought he deserved, and wanted to show how important he was. A bit of an odd choice of colour even from that point of view, as in the USA colours have the opposite political symbolism from the UK, and red = Republican and blue = Democrat.

DeanElderberry · 26/04/2025 17:47

The Pope was in favour of giving communion to divorced people (and of blessing same-sex unions). It's one the things the MAGA lot disapproved of.

Yes, that's correct. She has longish fair hair and was wearing it loose. The hat was small and round.

No, I was pointing out it wasn't a Church, which is what that poster was referring to.

gladiator12 · 26/04/2025 17:54

The Vatican's requested dress code was a black suit with a black tie so Trump deliberately contravened this out of pure arrogance. He truly is a despicable despot.

I felt sorry for the pallbearers , it seemed a very difficult job.

They were in blue suits too, I think.
