Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Paste sandwiches. Yuck. Tongue which my mum used to buy. When I was a child circa 60s you just ate what you were given!

@BigJanette - Delia's kedgeree recipe is delicious and extremely easy to make:

https://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/occasions/mothers-day/mothers-day-breakfast-and-brunch/kedgeree

Similar to my recipe except I use brown rice and add prawns and/or seafood mix.

I get sherbet lemons on Amazon.
They're on my Subscribe and Save.

There is actually a proper old fashioned style sweet shop in my town, which costs a fortune, you just don't see them in the newsagents any more.

They're the best aren't they!

Chocolate/black forest gateau. I mean, it's still around, you just never see it at parties any more.

Prawn cocktail crisps!

I'm so tempted to have a 80s/90s dinner party one day- prawn cocktails, black forest gateau- just can't think of a suitable main.

A classic chicken Kiev..

Brawn. I arrived home once as a kid to find a whole pigs head bobbing around in a pan, sort of peeping over the rim. Horrendous. Trotters sometimes as Dad loved them.
Mum worked in a deli and would bring home luncheon meat , haslett, tongue & other gruesome treats.

Haslett! Yes we used to have that in sandwiches in packed lunches - I cannot say it was delicious with sliced white turned soggy from the unripe tomato slices mmmm….

Gooseberries, where are all the gooseberries?

and the blackcurrants? I used to make a fruit crumble using tinned blackcurrants. it was bloody lovely eaten hot with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. I sometimes come across frozen ones as part of a pack of a freezer pack of mixed berries but have not seen tinned ones for years.

Turkey burgers...

@Whoistheeasterbunny have a look at The Prawn Cocktail Years - brilliant book of favourite foods from yesteryear - Simon Hopkinson and Lindsay Bareham so top notch recipes too. Nostalgic and a great read too…..

Birds Eye SuperMousse. Came in packs of 6-10. Strawberry and chocolate.

Oh this talk of kedgeree is making want to make some. Bought some smoked haddock half price in Lidl a couple of weeks ago and it’s frozen.

Rum and raisin ice cream
Gooseberries (English grapes!)

My local ice cream place sells that
used to drive home from school and beg my dad to stop in summer, he was always “oh no I won’t get anything…. Oh go on, a scoop of rum and raisin and a scoop of clotted cream”

Proper Cadbury's Dairy Milk - not the waxy sweet stuff it's become since Kraft started to produce it.

Just had a google and sainsburys do them in a tin. We used to have them as a treat from the fruit stall as children. I'd forgotten about them until you said.

Showing my age here, but Kunzle Cakes. A chocolate cup filled with cake and topped with buttercream. I thought they were the height of luxury when I was a child!

yes!!!! a real treat when I was little, I can remember struggling to bite into that thick chocolate cup but I persevered

Tinned lychees. Really miss them!

Can still get these in sainsbury and also Indian shops

MargaretThursday · 21/04/2025 14:41

Dm used to make a fantastic oxtail stew.

We used to suck on the bones to get all the juices out too.

Trumptonagain · 21/04/2025 14:42

Not tgat i ate any of those but since the deli's have gone from our local, and not so local supermarkets the variety of cold meats is now pretty limited.

In Inverness, where we lived in the 1980s, there was a McTatie's.

🤣🤣🤣

ghostyslovesheets · 21/04/2025 14:46

I used the just roll vol au vent pastry at Christmas when I did a 70’s buffet - filled with Campbell’s condensed mushroom soup!

my 23 year old daughter loves spam - it’s actually lovely fried!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 21/04/2025 14:49

TheHistorian · 21/04/2025 12:19

In my meat eating days we regularly had fried Spam for dinner, with homemade deep fried chips in lard and frozen peas. Makes my arteries twinge just thinking about it.

I was amazed to see it in the supermarket recently and wondered who was still buying it.

Heron do spam fritters. DH is quite partial but would need a bucket of gaviscon these days.

I use to like kedgeree. I’m vegi now so don’t make it.

Do people still make corn beef hash?

I'm veggie too, but regularly make haddock kedgeree for DP and DS and corned beef hash occasionally (my Mum's recipe and, apparently, quite tasty).

Gooseberries, where are all the gooseberries?

Yes! Where are all the gooseberries. Can't find them frozen or tinned. Have just bought a bush from B&Q to plant in my garden.
