Food you don’t often see anymore

1000 replies

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Tripe is definitely something you don't see much.

Not sure if it's still there but there used to be a tripe stall on Bolton Market years ago.

ThatFirmPearlPlayer · 21/04/2025 14:13

You can get them but I'm constantly outraged by the price I pay for whelks and winkles from online fishmongers.

And yes, I understand that the UK market doesn't want them, they're expensive to harvest etc etc

I gorge myself on them in France.

Huntley and Palmer Butter Osborne biscuits were lovely, the company were bought out and there is nothing to replace them now

DH and I were trying to remember the other day what the fake cream was you could get. Not Elmlea or Tip Top but there was something else.

Dream Topping?

Regularly make kedgeree it’s lovely!

We used to have faggots for dinner when we were kids growing up in the West Country (cheapo meatballs you would eat with mash and gravy) . Not sure they are allowed any more given the name.

Sometimes used to get a brand called Brains Faggots from the supermarket - blimey that sounds unappetising now. Loved them at the time….

Go to a local butcher. Mine sells huge faggots which are ice cream scoop sized. They are miles better than Brains ones

Sunquick- thick sticky orange syrup you mixed with water to make juice. Doesn't seem to be in supermarkets any more, on amazon its £9 a bottle! Cheaper to buy a multipack but I'm scared it won't taste the same as when I was a kid and ill be lumbered with it

When I bought this for the children, 70s/80s it reminded me of the orange juice we got from the Clinic as young children, that's one for we very old ones!

Blacmange. What happened to blacmange? Bring back blacmange I say!

Dream Topping?

That was it. Was that the powdered one that you whisked up with milk?

Lucelady · 21/04/2025 14:21

Sterlized cream in a tin
Jam sponge in a tin
Heinz chocolate baby food
(my sister I loved this and farely rusks at Christmas with hot milk).

My mother made all the retro stuff
Liver and bacon
Spag bol with oilve oil from the chemists
Sweet and sour with tin pineapple
Jelly mousse (replace water with tin milk)
Scone pizza
Cornbeef fritters
Egg curry
All the offal (tripe in a white sauce with onions)
Beetroot sandwiches with salad cream, warm from the home boil.

My favourite was gravy burgers. Big beef mince burgers baked in gravy with peas and mash. She died young and I've never found the recipe. She was a trained chef.

Yes it was, think Bird's made it.

Whoistheeasterbunny · 21/04/2025 14:23

A lot of this is making me weirdly hungry. Oh yes to the gooseberries, used to get them from the fruit and veg stalls in town as a child.

I was going to say

Birds Eye Crispy Pancakes

Neapolitan Ice Cream

Sherbert Lemons and other tubs of sweets sold by the gram

But just looked online and you can still get the pancakes and the neapolitan ice cream, I just must have never noticed them!

Tesco have it. Good in an iced bun.

My Mum was talking about this just the other day I think.

It was prompted because I thought I had fond memories of tinned fruit and evaporated milk but recently bought some and I immediately remembered the taste of evaporated milk as I put it in my mouth and remembered it wasn't that nice.

I think i was thinking of condensed milk being lovely, which it is!

My Mum came through as it took me an inordinate amount of time to type this out...

Was it Fussels thick cream? In a tin. I never tried it but my Mum said it was fantastic 👏

spam GIF

I was amazed to see Spam in the supermarket recently and wondered who was still buying it

That'll be me. Love Spam. So do my cats 🤣

PluckyBamboo · 21/04/2025 14:26

80's kid, basically hated every meal put in front of me....

Findus Crispy Pancakes 🤢
Findus French Bread Pizza🤢
Vesta Curry/Sweet and Sour pork (?)🤢🤢
Boil in the bag kippers🤢🤢🤮🤮
Bernard Matthews Turkey Burger 🤢🤮
Cabbage, fresh from the garden, boiled for hours until it resembled swan 💩🤢🤮

And, potatoes, always boiled potatoes with no seasoning, butter or parsley etc.

My Gran's fried bread, a million calories, life depleting etc but by heck it was amazing 🥰😋😋

Whoistheeasterbunny · 21/04/2025 14:27

Chocolate/black forest gateau. I mean, it's still around, you just never see it at parties any more.

Prawn cocktail crisps!

I'm so tempted to have a 80s/90s dinner party one day- prawn cocktails, black forest gateau- just can't think of a suitable main.

I get sherbet lemons on Amazon.
They're on my Subscribe and Save.

I recall doing tinned asparagus spears rolled in a couple of slices of ham and then baked in a cheesy sauce, OH loved it and decided it was a 'cheap meal' because it didn't used proper meat!

Oh that sounds GOOOD.

On the list for this week!

Jennifershuffles · 21/04/2025 14:28

Rum and raisin ice cream
Gooseberries (English grapes!)

1990s chili con carne.

I have never drunk or smoked. Still couldn’t afford M&S as a student.

I’m guessing OP went to uni before the huge fees and student loans.

Tangwystl · 21/04/2025 14:31

Boil in the bag cod in parsley/butter/cheese sauce. Utterly vile rectangles of overcooked, pasty fish with cotton wool texture.
I didn’t know fish was edible until I moved overseas! Now I choose it over meat, even when I’m back in the UK. Food has come on a lot in the last 50 years!

Bean burgers. Everywhere used to do them as the veggie option. Everywhere now seems to do beyond meat stuff, which I don’t like.
I loved spicy bean burgers.

I thought I was the only person who grew up with boiled potatoes! The lovely taste of starch.

If my parents put too much margarine on, some would go crumbly and taste awful, so it was a tight rope of how many I could actually push myself to eat.

I don't understand it either, I have the same access to funds, an oven, shops, ingredients as they did, and I still wouldn't resort to those 😂
