A case of "We are not amused ".

Note: This response (below, which is real) to Trump’s tweet depicting himself as pope is from the New York State Catholic Bishops, who represent the collective bishops of the state.

Among them is Cardinal Dolan of NYC, who Trump appointed to his new religious liberty commission this week.

It’s a good response. Although half of me thinks that we should just ignore it. It’s a distraction, it means nothing. We should concentrate on the awful stuff he’s doing.

Serpentstooth · 03/05/2025 19:26

It's part of the awful stuff though. Utter contempt for anything that takes attention away from his infantile self. Ugh

AcrossthePond55 · 03/05/2025 21:33

So any one wanna take bets on how long before Scrotus directs the DoJ to 'conduct an investigation' on the NY Bishops? Maybe he'll designate the Roman Catholic Church as a 'foreign gang' and have ICE arrest & send the Bishops to El Salvador. I mean, the very name shows that it's a foreign invader, right?

C'mon, you know it's entered his head to do just that.

I know it’s not the US but, like in Canada, Dutton has lost his seat in Australia. Another middle finger to Trumpism.

TomPinch · 03/05/2025 22:16

"Australia's political centre has held - as disenchanted Liberal voters continued their drift to new pastures, turning their backs on bunyip Trumpism - paradoxically even as the political core becomes more fractured and diverse.
The Greens saw their own repudiation, with voters rejecting what they regarded as extremism, obstructionism and support for bad causes such as the CFMEU (the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union)."

Love it.

NB: the Liberals in Australia are the equivalent of Reform or perhaps the Conservatives in the UK or Canada.

NZ elections next year- happily, the Trumpy element among senior politicians is very limited.

Australian election: Voters reject Peter Dutton's vision, giving Labor a remarkable victory and Liberals a difficult future

Analysis: Australia has fired Peter Dutton into the sun, taking much of the Liberal Party and its future with him.

Meanwhile our own bigly bigot is still revelling in the local election results 🤢

Serpentstooth · 03/05/2025 23:00

One bright thing amidst the gloom. Badenoch said "sorry" to her now ex councillors. Although anything that had gone wrong was obviously the fault of Keir Starmer and/or Jeremy Corbyn. Well done Australia and thank you. You're not as mad as we are.

In the Netherlands, we remember the fallen on May 4th at 8pm with 2 minutes silence and liberation day on May 5th

TomPinch · 03/05/2025 23:21

They're just as mad! Make of that what you will. But in Australia (and NZ) the sense is that the government is in control of immigration. That means both countries have been able to absorb more immigration per capita than the UK with less angst generally. Reform don't seem to be popular in Scotland or NI, no doubt that's partly because they're seen as English, but neither of those places are having to absorb anything like the uncontrolled immigration that England is getting. I guess my feeling is that it's the perception of uncontrolled immigration that is giving Reform their impetus.

Irony being written large by the Reform-A-Tory rep on Kuensberg. He appears to think they've won a general election. Lies and delusion.
