Seems the FBI have arrested a judge for saying "he went thataway" when ICE came to snatch a Mexican immigrant.

Hope this is true

NEWS: After canceling thousands of foreign students' immigration records — threatening their ability to study and live in the US — the Trump administration has reversed course and restored them all.

It follows intense pushback from courts across the country.

That will be that government efficiency again.

Possibly might need to mark this as a sensitive image.

George Santos sentenced to 87 months in prison

Is it weird that I feel (a bit) sorry for him? He's obviously mentally ill and needing help, but the Republicans were perfectly happy to overlook that for as long as possible to make use of him when they needed that vote.

Nah, don't waste your sympathy. These were Federal charges, I'm sure Scrotus will pardon him.

I'm reading Timothy Snyder's On Freedom. Just got to the concept of sadopopulism. "It activates racism as the substitute for a better future. It creates barriers that block the many, then defines freedom as their absence for the few."

What is wrong with US voters? Bigly must be the only person in history who couldn't make money from a casino. So why not let this failed businessman play with the world economy? Piss ups and breweries spring to mind immediately. It's beyond all reason.

My sentiments exactly, but I think it can only be explained by the “Fuck Liberals” approach which I mentioned some days ago.

More info on seating arrangements:
^Dignitaries will sit on the the right-hand side of the square - facing the Basilica - with the heads of state for Argentina and Italy taking the front seats.
This will be followed by reigning sovereigns followed by heads of states who will be seated in alphabetical order by country, in French.^

Why in French?

Why in French?

I’m assuming because it’s the traditional language of diplomacy.

DuncinToffee · 25/04/2025 21:18

I read that it is in French for political reasons. In Italian, Zelenskyy and Trump would have been seated close together

Most things Vatican related seem to be in Italian.

Or Latin. But anything European or diplomacy related is traditionally conducted in French. For much of its history the Vatican and Pope have had a distinctly diplomatic role.

In everything EU/Brussels related the dominant language is very much still French. It’s virtually impossible to hold a diplomatic post without speaking French.

I think this is historic and not the case now. English has been the replacement for quite some time.

It's not. French was the Lingua Franca at the EU (my experience is of the parliament and commission) but English took over a long time ago.

Without outing myself from personal experience French is still very much used in day to day working within the EU alongside English and at times German.

I could say the same thing regarding personal experience. Except in my experience English is the predominant language.

PickAChew · 25/04/2025 21:51

Google informs me (because my Italian is very basic) that united States is Stati Uniti but I suppose that wouldn't preclude Trump ending up slap bang in front of Zelenzkyy.

JoshLymanSwagger · 25/04/2025 22:13

Do we know if there is any political unrest in either Eswatini or Ethiopia at the moment?
