Ñews is on tv. Reporting Bigly saying a peace deal very close. And if he's said it, it must be true. Poor Ukraine.

The Second Coming
By William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it

Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Trumpism isn't working. The more it doesn't work, the more likely the pushback from powerful institutions.

I wish I could agree it isn't working

Occasionally I wind up DH by insisting the moon landings were filmed on a sound stage in Hollywood...😉

Hey, they could do it with clockwork in the 60s, but they can't do it now...🤷‍♀️

Have you watched 'fly me to the moon'? Not quite a stage in Hollywood but.....

tobee · 23/04/2025 18:48

Or Capricorn One?

Sorry that OJ Simpson is in it not withstanding it's a good film.

It is actually a very good film. 'The cat's on the roof' is a classic.

Serpentstooth · 23/04/2025 18:58

Prescient WB Yeats, thanks PerkingFaintly. Never more apt.

JoshLymanSwagger · 23/04/2025 19:06

@tobee DH has seen it ("good film that")...maybe my muse got inspiration from there while I was sewing and not wearing my glasses/paying attention Grin

This is horrific.

It certainly is. But if you're following the 'Hitler Handbook' it's par for the course. RFK Jr proposing to register people with autism (who will be next?), RFK Jr musing about 'health farms' for people with emotional/mental issues or substance abuse problems, Musk/Trump proposing rebates to increase the birthrate (Can everyone say 'Lebensborn'? I knew you could), Trump's 'Loyalty To Me Is All' criteria for keeping or removing someone incompetent, and the ongoing gutting of the US Govt.

The 'problem' is that Musk/Trump's Lebensborn tax rebates (details are scarce) legally wouldn't be able to be race-based, although they would probably be able to restrict them to US citizens.

Going on holiday next week. Not to the US but we have to transit via Houston with an overnight on the way out. There are a few taking the piss out of Trump posts on my page, though I've held back the last month due to that. I don't post a lot so considered whether it might be wise to delete them but decided to push them down the list by sharing cute videos of anteaters, porcupines etc and entering every competition I can see. Hopefully if immigration decide I look dodgy they'll get bored of scrolling quickly.

In the world of MAGA "owning the libs" is all that matters.

Meantime, their prices are rising, America is squandering its power, strengthening its enemies and destroying its economy for decades to come. Goldman Sachs knows it. Harvard knows it. Even Elon Musk has copped on.

Trumpism isn't working. The rest of the world are adapting and making arrangements that don't include Trump or America.

Oh, I get that, and knew it wouldn't. But unless enough of the voters can be convinced of that, nothing's going to change.

And I hope the rest of the world is adapting and making arrangements, but so far that's been mostly talk, and the alliances aren't exactly air tight.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/04/2025 21:33

He did say he was close to a deal. But if he doesn’t get one it’s zelensky’s fault.

And also waaaaaah Obama.

It's a nice change from waaaaaaaah Biden

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/04/2025 21:37

Give it time. He's only been in 100 days, but the US markets have shrunk by more than 10%. Global alliances and markets are shifting away from the US.

Some Trump voters and backers are already regretting their support. I hope that eventually they'll be able to vote him out. Meanwhile the rest of the world keeps turning.

Away from America.

Igotjelly · 23/04/2025 21:38

I always like how he includes Obama’s middle name as if it’s some kind of insult.

Well you know, got to imply he's Muslim at every opportunity.

@TooBigForMyBoots Yes, but it's early days. I'm not convinced the rest of the world really has it together. Europe's very fractured and the far right is a real threat here too, and aligning with China, which is what will really need to happen, has its downsides. It's all very well to want to move away from the US, but it's going to come at great cost to other countries.

CaveMum · 23/04/2025 22:17

BBC News also saying this evening that West Coast ports are reporting goods coming in from China are down nearly 40%.

logicisall · 23/04/2025 22:48

The rest of the world is trying appease mitigate Trump's tariffs while not annoying China. It's a fine balancing act made more difficult given the volatility of Trump's decision making.

Picking a side is impossible, but a talking head on Bloomberg said today that by September we won't even be talking about tariffs any more, so maybe countries are just trying to ride out the storm. And pick up the tatters afterwards.

China has not responded to Trump's latest comment on a deal being made soon.

Yes, and I read somewhere that that particular aspect is going to result in the collapse of the long haul trucking industry, so there will be pressure from those quarters too, and they are not to be messed with. I would guess we'll start seeing the bigliest (my autocorrect, presciently tried to correct that to bilgiest) most beautiful bestest trade deals ever, start to emerge very shortly
