Yes. Very much. It's a remnant from the time when English-speaking societies were majority Protestant and Catholics were routinely discriminated against, and Protestants regarded the Pope as the Antichrist.
I understand (but will stand corrected by Americans on here) that a 'proper' American used to be a WASP, ie, White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, the election of JFK as president was a big deal because he was a Catholic. The fact that a Catholic* like Vance is in the vanguard of American nationalism shows how things have changed
