What song makes you cry?

Hairymunter · 23/02/2025 16:30

I saw the Hibs fans singing Sunshine on Leith after beating Celtic yesterday. I was bawling my eyes out. That song makes me cry every single time. And it's a happy song!! What song gets you every time?

East 17 Stay Another Day was No 1 the day my Jack was born and died two hours later.. 💔 💔
To Where You Are by Josh Groban reminds me of Jack too.
Forever Love by Gary Barlow was just out when Wilf was born. I remember looking at him in his cot with FL. playing and crying tears of joy...

Will you search through the loamy earth for me?
Climb through the briar and bramble
I'll be your treasure
I felt the touch of the kings and the breath of the wind
I knew the call of all the song birds
They sang all the wrong words
I'm waiting for you
I'm waiting for you
Will you swim through the briny sea for me?
Roll along the ocean's floor?
I'll be your treasure
I'm with the ghosts of the men who can never sing again
There's a place, follow me
Where a love lost at sea
Is waiting for you
Is waiting for you

Morningtown Ride by the Seekers. My mum used to sing it to me, she passed away when I was 8.

Aw me too. I learned this in school when I was 5. I used to sing it all the time.

Many of those already mentioned plus:

Candles - Chris Rea (almost as much as Tell Me There's A Heaven)
Johnny Cash's cover of If You Could Read My Mind. Gordon Lightfoot's original is exquisite and lovely, but Cash's is so full of pain it's unbearable.
Toy Soldiers - Martika's Kitchen
Empty Chairs - Don McLean (even more than Vincent.)
Winner Takes It All - Abba
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - various. Roberta Flack, Gordon Lightfoot and the Stereophonics all did it beautifully.
Strange Fruit - various. I don't know whether this one makes me want to cry or throw things. Probably both.
So In Love - especially k.d. lang's cover from the Red, Hot and Blue album. Well worth watching the video while you listen.

Edited

I love the Gordon Lightfoot song, it is wonderful and I listened to it earlier

The JCB Song makes me think of my Dad as it was ‘our’ song. It came out when I was about 10; we both instantly loved it, and it was even going to be the song we danced to at my wedding. We sang it (very badly) at an open mic night once when we’d both had a few beers and almost nobody else there knew the song. BlushGrin

I played it to him on repeat when he was in a coma to try and bring him back to me but he never woke up. It’s only been a year so I’m not ready to hear it again yet, but hoping one day soon I’ll be able to listen and smile as it’s such a gorgeous song.

Nick Cave: Into My Arms

I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did, I would kneel down and ask him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Will not to touch a hair on your head
Leave you as you are
If he felt he had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms
And I don't believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that's true
But if I did, I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
Well, to each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms
But I believe in love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candles burning
Make her journey bright and pure
That she'll keep returning
Always and evermore
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms, oh, Lord
Into my arms

How could I have forgotten this one?

Now - Carpenters. That beautiful voice on the last recording before she died.

CitizenZ · 23/02/2025 21:19

Yiruma - River flows in you. It's a piano piece. I Happened upon it by chance and started crying, I don't know why. Less than a week later my father died unexpectedly. When we chose the music for his funeral, they asked for some 'reflection music' for when the curtain goes round the coffin. I knew it had to be this, because I felt like it had been some sort of weird sign.

Faiths Song - Amy Wadge

Gave you all that you needed
You cut but I'm bleeding

And all of my strength that I gave to you
I loved completely
You lose then you leave me
And all of my hope
I left with you too

But I gave my heart whole I did
I gave my heart
An' although it's lost
It is still beating

An' I gave my whole soul I did
I gave my soul

An' although I'm broken
I am still breathing

I will sleep through the moments
All the moments you've stolen
All for my love
I'll learn the truth

That I gave my heart whole I did
I gave my heart

And although it's lost
It is still beating

And I gave my whole soul I did
I gave my soul

And although I'm broken
I am still breathing

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkle. I used to teach teenagers with life limiting illnesses and on Friday afternoons we used choose songs to sing along to. This was always the choice of one of the students who was very ill and who passed away before her 18th birthday. Hearing it always makes me think of those Friday afternoons and those young people singing along.

Bruce Springsteen - I'll see you in my dreams. Was sobbing uncontrollably after seeing him perform an acoustic version last year and I can't listen to it now without crying.

Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines.

My Dad was in the RAF and we wanted something upbeat when leaving his funeral.

Can't hear it now without being a big snotty mess.

@Greebosmum that has made me both laugh and get teary at the same time. What a lovely idea!
