In addition to the courts, there needs to be protests, sit-ins, mass coverage (it boggles my mind that I know from the UK than many MAGAs in the USA) and pure fury. Don't be apathetic. Organise. Anticipate. Think at State level - one of the reasons the Republicans are so complacent is that they've packed the courts and jury-rigged the vote. What work is needed to undo it? Alternatively, what can you do to slow down DODGE? Don't give way; use malicious compliance to question each and every step. Slow down access.

There's going to be a minimum of four years of this crap.

CaveMum · 19/02/2025 09:37

There should be attack ads, campaigns, sit ins, protests, etc but the Dems don’t seem able/willing to organise right now.

I again recommend listening to the portion of Pod Save America with the interview with Steven A - he’s loud and brash and speaks his mind, but he’s not wrong when he says the Dems need to stop enforcing the candidate “they” think the country needs and listen to who the people want.

"The Opposition, formally known as HM Official Opposition, refers to the largest political party in the House of Commons that is not in government. The leader of this party takes the title Leader of the Opposition. The role of the Official Opposition is to question and scrutinise the work of the Government. More generally, any party that is not a part of the government is described as an opposition party."

Based on this definition from the Parliament website, no, we don't have a 'formal' opposition party. But in the US Congress this is what the minority party does. They watch what the majority party are doing. And it is what the Dems are doing. The problem is that what is needed is for GOP members 'disaffected' with Pres Musk, excuse me, I mean Scrotus, to actually act on their principles and join with the Dems in bi-partisanship and oppose him. And vote against anything they can vote against.

Question; So let's say the UK opposition party doesn't like something the 'ruling' party is doing. What power do they have to actually change it? Can they 'veto'? Can they prorogue or dissolve Parliament (or ask the King to)? Can they call for an election off their own backs? Or are they stuck with what the Dems are stuck with; screaming the Heavens down but unable to really DO anything other than stall what they can by delaying votes, lobbying 'across the aisles', and getting out with their constituents and protest?

At this point it appears the only real actions that can be taken are filing lawsuits. And that they are doing, along with various states and organization. But Musk's philosophy of "Move fast and break things" vs a court system that moves at its own pace means that it's going to be a long time before any of this is settled.

The theory is that it is parliament that is supreme. Parliament consisting of all elected MPs. Government, ruling party (from which government is usually drawn) and all other parties combined.

You start with the ruling party having a simple majority. They form the government. However "the government" can't just do what it want's It is constrained by law.

If the government wants to "unconstrain" itself, then it has to have it's laws approved by parliament.

Usually this is a given. However, as Theresa May found out, if there are factions in the ruling party, the government may not be able to get a law passed. In her case it was trying to get an agreement on "Brexit" whatever the fuck that was.

More recently Rishi Sunak had problems with Tory headbangers who were set to abstain or even vote against his small boats measure it didn't include text to allow ignoring the ECHR etc.

It's easy to confuse parliament and the government. However they are distinct elements of our constitution. Our legislature* and executive respectively.

*There is also the upper chamber. However because it is unelected, it's powers have been slowly whittled down over the years. And it is still an existential question as to how far an unelected body can go opposing a "democratically elected" one.

There are protests going on but they're not getting coverage wonder why? Hmm

It seems Zelensky is the only one prepared to actually call Trump out on the rubbish he is spouting.

We’ll see what The Orange One and his lackeys have to say in response.

Un-fucking-believable - from the Guardian;

Zelenskyy “better move fast” or he won’t have a country left - Trump
In a Truth Social post Donald Trump wrote Ukraine’s Zelenskyy “better move fast” or he won’t have a country left

TopPocketFind · 19/02/2025 16:12

More from the Guardian

Donald Trump has called the Ukrainian President a “dictator” who has done a “terrible job”.

He claims “millions have died” as a result.

“A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left."

TopPocketFind · 19/02/2025 16:17

Full post

Zelenskyy admits that half of the money we sent him is “MISSING.” He refuses to have Elections, is very low in Ukrainian Polls, and the only thing he was good at was playing Biden “like a fiddle.” A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left. In the meantime, we are successfully negotiating an end to the War with Russia, something all admit only “TRUMP,” and the Trump Administration, can do. Biden never tried, Europe has failed to bring Peace, and Zelenskyy probably wants to keep the “gravy train” going. I love Ukraine, but Zelenskyy has done a terrible job, his Country is shattered, and MILLIONS have unnecessarily died – And so it continues…..

Igotjelly · 19/02/2025 16:18

The Truth Social post is worth reading in full, it’s absolutely batshit crazy:

Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending $350 Billion Dollars, to go into a War that couldn’t be won, that never had to start, but a War that he, without the U.S. and “TRUMP,” will never be able to settle. The United States has spent $200 Billion Dollars more than Europe, and Europe’s money is guaranteed, while the United States will get nothing back. Why didn’t Sleepy Joe Biden demand Equalization, in that this War is far more important to Europe than it is to us — We have a big, beautiful Ocean as separation. On top of this, Zelenskyy admits that half of the money we sent him is “MISSING.” He refuses to have Elections, is very low in Ukrainian Polls, and the only thing he was good at was playing Biden “like a fiddle.” A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left. Igotjelly · 19/02/2025 16:37

Don’t know why we were so worried with Tulsi Gabbard being a Russian asset when all Putin has to do is call up his good friend Donny.

tobee · 19/02/2025 16:48

Remember when other world leaders had a phone call with Putin since the invasion? Everyone jumped on them for doing so. When is this going to be happening with Trump? Are they not going to bother because they need to keep Trump sweet? AND BECAUSE THEY KNOW ITS NOT GOING TO MAKE THE SLIGHTEST FUCKING BIT OF DIFFERENCE ANYWAY?

pantsalot · 19/02/2025 16:50

What would Europe do if Trump hands Ukraine to Putin? What could they do?

I think we need to be mindful that Ukraine won’t let itself be handed over, they will fight like hell for their right to exist as a free sovereign nation. Europe can and I’m sure would continue to support them though I worry we’re currently in no position to replace what the US have provided.

I have serious concerns about intelligence sharing too with the US now, surely it can’t be secure to share anything even remotely sensitive with the US.

Trump was quite happy to try and blackmail Zelenskyy into dirt on Alexander Vindman and Hunter Biden as a tool to throw the 2016 election whilst holding back aid. He was impeached on abusing the power of his office and obstructing Congress.

pantsalot · 19/02/2025 16:56

Europe's military resources are already depleted from supplying Ukraine. That along with decreased budgets on military funding means they haven't been replacing them.

As was pointed out on todays TRIP US - Zelenskyy still has the tapes of Trump begging him to hand over dirt on Hunter Biden. Don’t be surprised if those suddenly see the light of day given the rankings of the last few days.

All that being said, Trump is bouncing all over the place - Canada and Mexico no longer being mentioned; his Gaza plan has gone very quiet. Give it a week and he may well have forgotten all about Ukraine and moved on to someone/somewhere else.

BustingBaoBun · 19/02/2025 17:00

Yes, he has the attention span of a gnat whilst trying to 'do deals' here and there. It's embarrassing.

We can only hope! I fear though that the damage is done, the relationship between the US and Europe has been irrevocably damaged and Trump has undermined Article 5 to the point of it being meaningless. Putin must be sipping champagne and enjoying caviar.

tobee · 19/02/2025 17:06

Why oh why did Trump have to be born American?

Although, of course, many Trump types could have been born many times in other countries that did not have the power that the US has

JoshLymanSwagger · 19/02/2025 18:22

I would have expected Trump to encourage Europe to keep backing Ukraine, to put all of their resources into it...
That way he can take GreenRedWhiteAndBlueland with no meddling from those pesky Danes/Europeans.
