What is THE definitive 80s song?

Might not be your favourite, but what song encapsulates the 80s for you?

We've been having a debate at work, and the consensus is it's got to be Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'.
It is the 80s right?
There can be no argument, it's got everything - weird music video, Bonnie's hair, makeup and fashion.
And the pure power ballad vocals 👌

Agree?

For me it has to be Kylie's I Should Be So Lucky....Neighbours girl next door to Stock Aitken Waterman megastar.

Not saying it's my favourite but it would be the first song I think of that embodies all the 'big' things about 80's music (plus her hair looking like a bird's nest in that hat was huuuuge 🤣).

KnickerFolder · 12/02/2025 12:08

Tainted Love. The song that got everyone rushing to the dance floor at the school disco.

Chuchoter · 12/02/2025 12:10

Don't You (Forget About Me) By Simple Minds.

shellyleppard · 12/02/2025 12:10

Katrina and the waves.... walking on sunshine. Always always puts me in a good mood

Yazz - The Only Way is Up

CheshireCats · 12/02/2025 12:13

Come on Eilleen.

DoNoTakeNo · 12/02/2025 12:14

Another vote for Katrina & the Waves

JustCuttinAboot · 12/02/2025 12:14

Tainted Love or Don’t You Want Me.

or perhaps Relax, Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Love Cats

We're so wonderfully, wonderfully
Wonderfully, wonderfully pretty

HÆLTHEPAIN · 12/02/2025 12:14

Probably Smalltown Boy for me, though I was a massive Wham! and George Michael fan.

Glitterbiscuits · 12/02/2025 12:14

Duran Duran - Rio

Obviously!

IntelligentInputDarling · 12/02/2025 12:15

You've all got good taste.

Another hot contender here is Human League's 'Don't You Want Me'.

No sorry it has to be a Duran Duran one, Rio I think.

Them sitting on the boat in the video is the 80s summed up in one quintessential moment.

Donotgogentle · 12/02/2025 12:16

Take On Me.

Tcateh · 12/02/2025 12:17

La Isla Bonita Madonna

But there are soooo many genres from the eighties!

Heard that one the other day and it just took me back.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 12/02/2025 12:17

Africa.

LegalBarbie · 12/02/2025 12:18

The Final Countdown

Moveoverdarlin · 12/02/2025 12:19

A Little Respect - Erasure
Don't leave me this way - The Communards
Anything by Wham!

LauraNorda · 12/02/2025 12:21

There are just so many. Early 80s sounded totally different to late 80s.

Early 80s might include Visage - Fade to grey or any by Yazoo, mid 80s you've got Madonna - Holiday or Pet Shop Boys - West end girls. Late 80s, stuff like Black Box - Ride on time or any Kylie song.

Gonksmum · 12/02/2025 12:22

I think China in Your Hand by T'Pau. Lots of shouting, saxophones and general 80s-ness.

Rummly · 12/02/2025 12:26

Any Matt Bianco.

Wigtopia · 12/02/2025 12:27

Has to be Africa by Toto — surely?!

sciaticafanatica · 12/02/2025 12:27

Relax

paisley256 · 12/02/2025 12:32
