What is THE definitive 80s song?

Might not be your favourite, but what song encapsulates the 80s for you?

We've been having a debate at work, and the consensus is it's got to be Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'.
It is the 80s right?
There can be no argument, it's got everything - weird music video, Bonnie's hair, makeup and fashion.
And the pure power ballad vocals 👌

Agree?

Slightly off topic but if you haven't watched the literal video version of total eclipse of the heart you must. It is hilarious

Oh yes I have, many, many times.
It's genius, we watch it more than is healthy.
Never gets old.
And DCs love this version more than the original.
As they rightfully should 😆

Whole of the moon by The Waterboys.
Or Pet Shop Boys Always on my mind.
They have a very 80's sound I think.

IntelligentInputDarling · 12/02/2025 15:31

DC13 says Gold by Spandau
Or something by PSB.

Surely 'Do they know it's Christmas'. Covers all your bases.

chollysawcutt · 12/02/2025 15:35

(plus, it was acceptable in the 80s...)

Tangomango1 · 12/02/2025 15:35

@RainbowZebraWarrior

You are a girl after my own heart 😍

All the songs you just mentioned are 'belters' 🥳

You can't beat the 80's!!!!!!

I have 2 grown up children now, a daughter who is 25 & a son who is nearly 23 & they have both actually said, in their own words, thank you Mum & Dad for the music they heard growing up! 😊

It has been tough bringing up 'know it all teenagers' but music can honestly bring you together!

Ridingthegravytrain · 12/02/2025 15:37

@IntelligentInputDarling haha so do my children. It's amazing. What the effing crap...that angel guy just felt me up 😂

The James blunt beautiful one is also funny

99 Red Balloons. Or Two Tribes. Or Dancing with Tears in My Eyes by Ultravox. I was shit scared of nuclear war in the 80s!

I’m confused how an 11 year old and a 13 year-old can have any say in this discussion?

letthemeatcakes · 12/02/2025 15:41

I have 2 that instantly sum up the 80s when I hear them!
Blue Monday - New Order
European Son - Japan
It's like I'm there, whizzed back in time! The 80s was my best time!

Everything I do, I do it for you was actually released in 1991.

I'm actually just sorting through my 80s CDs right now. We also recorded every episode of TOTP throughout the 80s and my Dad still has the VHs tapes. We also recorded all of Live Aid.

Small-town Boy is a great one. Groundbreaking at the time.

Difficult to pick one song. Possibly Imagination by Belouis Some as it seemed to different and risqué

Also in the running would be Hey Mickey and Stand and Deliver.

I think it's a real shame that the BBC has banned so many classic TOTP episodes from being shown because of that monster hosting them.

Nobody really cared about the host of the show - I don't see why they couldn't just edit his bits out and then, only if necessary (so none of the silly 'continuity' bits) replace his words with text on the screen or somebody else dubbing them over.

They could easily put a quick small message up saying that certain non-music sections have been re-recorded - then viewers would either understand why or not know/care anyway.
