What is THE definitive 80s song?

Might not be your favourite, but what song encapsulates the 80s for you?

We've been having a debate at work, and the consensus is it's got to be Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'.
It is the 80s right?
There can be no argument, it's got everything - weird music video, Bonnie's hair, makeup and fashion.
And the pure power ballad vocals 👌

Agree?

It would be a lot of editing though. Not worth it for the audience figures.

Swing out Sister Breakout !

HauntedBungalow · 12/02/2025 17:17

I mean it wasn't just Savile - Dave lee travis too, Glitter, Harris - sure there must have been some weeks in the 80s where the entire studio was just paedos.

ignatiusjreilly · 12/02/2025 17:33

@NetballHoop Thanks! Going to listen now.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 12/02/2025 17:33

Bardot - One step further

Dollar - Mirror

Bucks Fizz - Land of make believe

Ah, yes, I'd forgotten the others - including the one BBC DJ who was and still is lionised, amazingly given his circumstances (think the outside of an orange).

I still don't see why they couldn't just show the actual musical performances, though, one after the other with no links. That (well, and the charts) was all we watched it for anyway - the DJs were just the BBC making it more BBC for the sake of it.

Crazykefir · 12/02/2025 17:42

Its obviously Don't You Want Me The Human League, I'm suprised you needed to ask.

chocolateisavegetable · 12/02/2025 17:43

For the late 80s, I wanna dance with somebody by Whitney Houston

chollysawcutt · 12/02/2025 17:50

I mean, if you're going for more of a Billboard/Top40 kind of definitive, then I would have to say Purple Rain, Africa or actually, Thriller are probably pretty solid choices.

ItsFreedomBabyYeah · 12/02/2025 17:53

Our House by Madness

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 12/02/2025 18:12

Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode
Guaranteed to fill the dance floor at any party populated by the over 40s.

So many of these songs make me feel young and carefree. And like going for a drive late at night when I have nowhere I need to go and I just don't want to go home yet.

HerculesMulligannn · 12/02/2025 18:19

I’m surprised there is not more love for Vienna. That also has everything - quintessential 80s hair, storming melody and bass, pretentious and incomprehensible video, upturned collars and swirling mist.

Sarah Greene does not allow Mike Smiths episodes to be shown.

BellissimoGecko · 12/02/2025 18:28

Tainted Love by Soft Cell.
Or Careless Whisper by George Michael.

BellissimoGecko · 12/02/2025 18:31

Mel 'n' Kim, Respectable

God, there are so many, aren't there? What a great decade for music.

Why not? He was OK wasn’t he? And I’d be really surprised if she had the power to do that anyway.
