I wonder what the female equivalent to 'Everyone knows a ... ' is?

I know a lot of Claires/Clares/Clairs
And Emmas and Emilys.
Also Lauras and Rachels.

And inexplicably, between my sister and I, we know 7 Jans 😂

I'd add Sarah to the list. If we're including older generations then definitely Sue and Margaret too.

Wasn't there no Florence before Florence Nightingale? And the Italian city is really called Firenze? My source is a Ladybird book which was kindly supplied to me by Mr Gladstone, whose real name wasn't Mr Gladstone because he was Polish and just took over the name of the previous owner of the bookshop. Or so went the story.

And John! A few Pauls too.

Female names in my year at school were Julie, Debbie, Tracy, Karen, Sharon .

Snap!
Also had about 6 friends called Michelle 😁

Ddakji · 10/02/2025 20:33

Yes, I’ve known several! And a David.

Good classic name.

About 20 years ago I did a days supply in a year six class. Three girls introduced themselves as Pauline, Barbara and Pamela. I thought they were taking the piss but it was true.

Were you working at St Clare's?! 😄

I had childhood friends who were sisters, called Fiona and Constance.

A neighbour at my previous house was a Fiona.

Haven't come across any others since.

Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did. And that wasn't a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one and calls out, "Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave!" she doesn't get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!

JustCuttinAboot · 10/02/2025 20:44

One Dave, and four Davids off the top of my head

In Ireland they're all Davy's I think...

Not in my experience. In Ireland Davy is the stockbrokrs or a jockey! Everyone is is David or Dave.

I know loads. Very common but none under 30.

DebbieTheCat · 10/02/2025 22:31

@DuesToTheDirt I had totally forgotten about this poem!

I know a few.

One has the middle name Rodney 😁

🤣🤣🤣

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/02/2025 00:24

I've known 2 couples called John and Pauline (they'd be in their 80s now). Called "Work John and Pauline" and "Scouse John and Pauline".
I slso know 3 couples called Mark and Allison- all in their 50s. So we have "Big Mark and Allison " , "Little Mark and Allison" and "Work Mark and Allison".

Carnewb · 11/02/2025 00:35

I think I've known one or two Dave's, more have gone by David though and disliked being called Dave.
I know at least 6 Karen's (their actual name, I'm not trying to insult anyone!) and a fair few Claire's (spelled in various ways) Emma's, Pauline's and Daniels.

Pallisers · 11/02/2025 00:40

Late 50s. I have known loads of them both in Ireland and the US - socially and working. Dated one too - lovely guy. There were at least 5 Daves in my class at university. Some went by David.

SnowFrogJelly · 11/02/2025 00:41

At least 3...

BaMamma · 11/02/2025 00:47

I work with 2 David's, does that count?

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 11/02/2025 00:56

My father in law, although both me and my husband prefer to pretend he doesn’t exist.

beachcitygirl · 11/02/2025 01:09

None

Giggorata · 11/02/2025 01:10

Around six Daves or Davids and one Daithi. All contemporaries of mine, so quite old.
I had thought it was one of those names that were becoming more rare, but perhaps not.

RoxytheRexy · 11/02/2025 01:56

I gave birth to one. He's interchangeably Dave, Davey or David. Only 1 at his school

Foodoverload · 11/02/2025 02:01

Current DP is a Dave. Randomly last 2 boyfriends before him were both Dave’s. Apparently I have a thing for Dave’s

BeforeTheFall · 11/02/2025 02:11

Daves are usually solid, reliable blokes. I used to worry what will happen when they all die out because nobody seemed to naming their son’s David/Dave any more.
However, delighted to report that a 6 month old Dave was in Asda cafe with his Mum last week. Named after his Grandad (we got chatting). Dave’s mum said if she has another boy he will be called Simon, after the other Grandad. If it is a girl, Sue or Jennifer.

Packingcube · 11/02/2025 05:39

I'm one of five children three married Dave's we have a Dad Dave and two of us married Sarah of the three BIL Dave's their sons have middle name Dave. My husband has three nephews from one biological two by marriage all called Katie.
My poor daughter gets ever so confused.

sashh · 11/02/2025 05:48

I'm only in touch with one at the moment, but I have worked with and dated a Dave or two.

A pp mentioned not knowing any and being in Scotland, maybe in Scotland it is a James / Jim / Jimmy.

I think Simon is due a come back, most are in their 50s now.

MoonWoman69 · 11/02/2025 08:18

@DebbieTheCat
I am a Deborah, (named after Deborah Kerr).
I don't mind Deb or Debs, but if anyone calls me Debbie, or spells it Debra, I get the rage! Debbie isn't an abbreviation of Deborah, it's a name of it's own. And Debra is American I think?
I probably wouldn't have minded Debbie probably, but my b grandmother used to shriek it when she wanted my attention. I used to correct her every time, as did my mum. But she was just all round spiteful, so did it on purpose to wind me up.
There are only two people in my life that call me Debbie and always have. But for some weird reason, that doesn't bother me at all!

Oh my word, that's a lot of Dave's all potentially being together at the same time!
I think you win the award for 'high probability of Dave related confusion' 😁
