Does Dave the cat count? He's given up coming in our garden because my girls were mean to him 😼😼

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 10/02/2025 18:49

I'm married to one, although he also goes by David, Davey and Dai, depending on who is talking to him.

My brother was one too, but only David if he was on trouble. So quite a lot.

I'm trying to think how many others I know and I'm not sure. Definitely an array of Daves, Davids, and Dais with the occasional Dafydd. Are we counting Dewi because I think I know one of them as well..

DebbieTheCat · 10/02/2025 18:52

Loving all these pet names.

@TorroFerney Portia is Pet Name Goals 👌🏻
Love all the dogs and cats and millipede (!!) named Dave.

My dad, grandad, brother, uncle and landlord are all Daves!

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 10/02/2025 18:52

Two,one my good mate Davie (Northern soul scene) sadly passed away.
The other a complete prick dinosaur I had the unfortunate pleasure of working with for twelve years.

weegiemum · 10/02/2025 18:54

One of my (many) brothers is Dave.

I know 4others, all adults. You don't hear about many wee Davids these days which is a shame, as it's a lovely name.

GoldMoon · 10/02/2025 18:55

A David in the family but not close and haven't seen for years.
Also Dave was the dh of a friend who no longer lives in the area , so I don't know any currently .

EmeraldDreams73 · 10/02/2025 19:04

Oh! I'm up to 9 now, including an elderly Westie dog who was such a sweetheart.

Seawolves · 10/02/2025 19:06

I married a Dave, I also have a friend with a Dave for a husband which caused confusion sometimes in conversations.

I didn't for years until I met one and married him. We are now in a position where half the school dads seem to be Daves and the others are either Steve, Chris or Jim/James. And most of the mums are called Emma, Claire or Sarah and they all have the middle name Louise

Omg yes! In the 70s, the only middle name for Sarah was Louise or Jane. Every Sarah I know is one or the other, including me. Numerous Elizabeths and Clares, too.

Always loads of us in every class, and at 6th form there was actually another girl with the same first, middle AND surname as mine. I only realised when looking for A level results on the board - highly confusing at first, looking at hers (different subjects) before spotting my own!

Mind you, my mum was under a lot of pressure from her in-laws to call me Hilary so I guess I shouldn't complain...

Threewheeler1 · 10/02/2025 19:20

I'm counting Steves and Marks too now 🤔
Think there might be more of Mark for me than Dave or Steve!

ohtowinthelottery · 10/02/2025 19:32

It's a bit of a joke around these parts that if you don't know/can't remember a chap's name, then just call him Dave and there's a good chance you'll be right!

BlanketLanyard · 10/02/2025 19:33

At one time my mum, sister and I were all dating guys called Dave/David. My brother is also one.

I'm no longer with a Dave, but have a BIL called it.

I have one of the very common female names mentioned here.

And John! A few Pauls too.

Female names in my year at school were Julie, Debbie, Tracy, Karen, Sharon .

DebbieTheCat · 10/02/2025 19:53

I wonder what the female equivalent to 'Everyone knows a ... ' is?

I know a lot of Claires/Clares/Clairs
And Emmas and Emilys.
Also Lauras and Rachels.

And inexplicably, between my sister and I, we know 7 Jans 😂

In my year group at high school there were at least 8 Sarah's

Glitchymn1 · 10/02/2025 20:02

Two!

pinklilys · 10/02/2025 20:10

None. I'm of an age where I think I should.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 10/02/2025 20:10

My stepdad (or bonus dad as he likes to call himself) is a Dave and he's wonderful

3 human Daves and a cat Dave.
Also knew a cat Fiona... no ones called Fiona anymore!

Fiona is a made up name.

It was invented by a poet who wanted to write as a female alter ego. There is no example of Fiona as a name beforehand.

purplebrat · 10/02/2025 20:18

I suppose i know 'of' Dave's, but I don't actually know any, I have a very small circle of family, no friend and am not in work.

mamaduckbone · 10/02/2025 20:18

I know 3 that I can think of. Probably more.

Going off an a tangent, it's funny how different names become fashionable in different countries at different times. I remember being quite surprised when my French friend called her daughter Pauline twenty years ago.

Just lately, I've come across two other young Paulines. One was the woman who processed my carte de séjour in 2021, the other is my conseiller at the bank.

I also know two young French Kevins. All mid twenties.

About 20 years ago I did a days supply in a year six class. Three girls introduced themselves as Pauline, Barbara and Pamela. I thought they were taking the piss but it was true.
