Yes but we call him Rodney

Are you/he from the Caribbean by any chance? 😄

CantStopBuyingSeeds · 10/02/2025 18:02

None. My neighbour is called David but don't know any Daves

Princesspollyyy · 10/02/2025 18:03

I don't know any

Rainbowdeer · 10/02/2025 18:04

Yes and I even know a dog called Dave😂😂

Spidey66 · 10/02/2025 18:05

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 10/02/2025 16:32

3 human Daves and a cat Dave.
Also knew a cat Fiona... no ones called Fiona anymore!

My cousin's called Fiona..and her dad is called Dave.

I also know 2 Davids, which is a far better name.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 10/02/2025 18:06

Two that go by Dave in my dog, a few more Davids

pootleondown · 10/02/2025 18:10

I forgot to name them and remembered the extra one. They're known in my head as
Dickhead Dave
Cricket Dave
The lovely Dave
Dave next door
Pervy Dave

HobnobsChoice · 10/02/2025 18:10

I didn't for years until I met one and married him. We are now in a position where half the school dads seem to be Daves and the others are either Steve, Chris or Jim/James. And most of the mums are called Emma, Claire or Sarah and they all have the middle name Louise

UnimaginableWindBird · 10/02/2025 18:14

I know a couple of Davids, but no Daves.

BebbanburgIsMine · 10/02/2025 18:14

I've known three Davids.

Alll went by the name Davey or Davie

I'm in NE Scotland

Never known a Dave.

SabrinaThwaite · 10/02/2025 18:24

At school in the 70s / 80s so many of the boys were called David, John, Andrew, Steven, Michael or Richard.

HellofromJohnCraven · 10/02/2025 18:25

I'm 57.
Daves and Steve's aplenty!

catin8oots · 10/02/2025 18:28

My adorable late FIL was a Dave. I miss him so much. Can't think of any others apart from a 2 Davids I went to school with in the 80s/90s

As an aside, I run a helpline as part of my job role. I would say that approximately 75% of all men out there are called Steve or Mark 😀

MelisandeLongfield · 10/02/2025 18:28

Lots of them at work. It was a popular name for Gen X!

I always enjoy the '12 Daves of Christmas' on Absolute Radio - for some reason it tickles me, blokes from different random parts of the UK singing their names.

ImWearingPantaloons · 10/02/2025 18:28

I'm Welsh and know a Dai.

Does that count?

ThatUniqueKoala · 10/02/2025 18:30

Off the top of my head I know 4

BobnLen · 10/02/2025 18:30

I'm mid 60s, know a few including BIL

Davros · 10/02/2025 18:34

DramaAlpaca · 10/02/2025 16:06

My DH's three closest friends are all called Dave. DH is not called Dave. DH is known affectionately as 'the honorary Dave'.

That's like me and the two Julies. I'm not called Julie but I'm an honorary third Julie

Redheadedstepchild · 10/02/2025 17:17

My childhood best friend was called David. Never called Dave though. We met at playgroup aged three and were pretty much inseperable until we we got to about fourteen and other influences took over. We sat next to each other in class and both our sets of parents were quite bemused. I even had a big soft bodied baby doll, dressed in pink that I called David which my grandad found hilarious.

It was like the Pulp song. "Disco 2000"

"Your name was Deborah,
It never suited ya...

...and they said that when we grew up,
We'd get married and never split up..."

His house wasn't all that small but it did have woodchip on the wall.

I bloody love that song!

Also applicable to me and my best friend in high school, he wasn't a Dave though, he was a Colin 😆
We did eventually "go out with each other" as it was known in the 80s (except our parents called it "courting" 😂)
but realised we were better off as friends and he still is one of my best mates.

At least 30 plus Dave's. Probably closer to 50 if I really think about it, I have 9 in my phone book. (Work in a big engineering company!) plus a couple of David's. A Dave the dog too.

Angrymum22 · 10/02/2025 18:41

Loads. When I was at uni there were 5 on the same floor in halls. They had various nicknames. We ran out and the last one was known as “Dave the cardboard box”.
My ex BIL is a Dave and my DSis is soon to marry another Dave, but has always been known by his nickname.
My BIL on my DH’s side is a Dave.
It was a really common name in the 60s and 70s

Rainplops · 10/02/2025 18:42

Dozens.

BIL. Cousin's DH. Other cousin's DH. Three neighbours within a cul-de-sac of 17 houses (ranging in age from 40 - 75). Several at work. Many friends throughout the ages (I am 50.)

I knew one David pronounced a European way who would be 12 now (Da-VEED), but other than that, I think my neighbour at 40 is the youngest.

DS is 14, he is in a school of 1000+, he only knows one David.

I only ever dated one Dave.

I don't know why it is so popular. Same as Steve.

<Ahem!>

I love proper names for pets! (See username lol)
My friend's cat is called Cheryl, and my aunt's dog is called Bridget, which always cracks me up for some reason.
Our daft dog is a Roger 😄

I agree op, I knew I would love Far from The Madding Crowd when the daft sheepdog at the beginning was called George.

I heard a woman calling her dog, a small doodle type - Portia. Not sure about that, I prefer a more workaday name.

DebbieTheCat · 10/02/2025 18:45

Incidentally @Redheadedstepchild , we have just come from a Deborah’s (woodchip free) house, (she is my DC’s music teacher) and she is always known as Deborah. Never Debbie, or heaven forbid - Debs. But another of my friends is a Debra, who is never known as Debra (well, only to her mum) and is always known as Debbie.
They both think our cat is named after them 😁
