'Sense and Sensibility' is on BBC2 and my sis in law and I have been half watching it, whilst catching up and also MN-ing 😄

Both big fans of Emma Thompson here.

Of course she’s nice. But I find her the absolute epitome of middle class English niceness, which is actually a bit dull. She tries to be gruff and sweary sometimes with a little bit of Estuary English thrown in, as if she knows how people see her. But it’s not convincing. She’s like a grammar school head girl trying to get the cool kids not to dislike her.

😂 Love that description @ARainyNightInSoho
Pretty spot on.

Yeah I like her too, don't really care what class she's from.

StupidBitchy · 01/02/2025 17:37

I dunno she said some weird stuff when promoting her Leo Grande movie...

Yes. I mean, I like her too, but she’s the epitome of a certain kind of brisk Englishwoman. The scene in Love Actually where she tells Liam Neeson’s bereaved character to move on because no one likes a crybaby makes me see how the British Empire happened.

SheWaits · 01/02/2025 17:50

Absolutely not. Complete champagne socialist.

ARainyNightInSoho · 01/02/2025 17:55

@Lyn348 I don’t care that she’s middle class. Why would I care? But pretending that middle class culture doesn’t exist is weird.

ARainyNightInSoho · 01/02/2025 17:58

@SheWaits having just savaged the way she comes across I would say that I actually like her politics. Why aren’t people with money allowed to say that society should be fairer?

HermioneWeasley · 01/02/2025 18:01

She’s a hypocrite- she flew from LA to London for a climate change protest. Also thinks that women prisoners should be locked up with rapists if the rapist identifies as a woman. She’s the epitome of luxury beliefs for privileged people.

It's pretty low and bigoted to dislike a person you never met because of their class.

Also maybe you are not aware, but people of a class get to have their own personalities too and may not behave 100% in accordance to your narrow views.

I absolutely don’t dislike her because of her class. That would be weird as I am as middle class as they come. Very like her in fact.

BeaAndBen · 01/02/2025 18:06

She's a bloody marvellous actress. One of my favourites is her as P.L. Travers in Saving Mr Banks.

I don't agree with her on all the issues she talks about (and Last Christmas is a stupid film) but she's a terrific actress and wrote some good films.

usbslot2 · 01/02/2025 18:09

I like her but she's a bit annoying as well. A total lovey and very privileged but also seems like her heart is the right place and she's a very good actress.

unlikelywitch · 01/02/2025 18:11

No, I don’t think so. She’s extremely affected and always ‘on’.

Gnomegarden32 · 01/02/2025 18:11

The tabloids reported that she flew back for the demo but she didn't - she was flying back for work.

I like how she speaks up about unpopular issues despite the fact she gets shit for it. Also love her as an actress obvs.

Fawn87 · 01/02/2025 18:12

She's a great actress, don't know enough about her personally to say if she's lovely or not.

Lovethatforyouhun · 01/02/2025 18:14

Luxury beliefs and nepotism at its finest. Yawn.

I absolutely love that film! But I hated Last Christmas too, and Love Actually

I like her because she takes risks. Not many over 60 actresses who don't have the 'perfect' body would do a full frontal like she did in Good Luck To You, Leo Grande

raralalala · 01/02/2025 18:18

she's a do as I say not as I do kind of champagne socialist

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 01/02/2025 18:18

She's a great actress. I am a well- educated, middle-aged, middle class woman who spends a lot of time wearing an anorak and wellies driving car loads of horse-mad kids about and making brisk-and-cheery chitchat with other be-anoraked middle class, middle aged women who have forgotten to brush their hair properly. I consider her to be our patron saint (though with far fewer anoraks and better hair).

Screamingabdabz · 01/02/2025 18:19

Nope. I admire her acting abilities but can’t stand hypocrites.

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/02/2025 18:19

I sat and watched the whole film again (and recorded it!) it is absolutely beautiful. It brings back lovely memories for me of a great friend (who was in the production team) and a place I lived in Devon for a while which was very near the location of the cottage. This friend visited us for a long weekend when she was on location - the weather was perfect, we went to beaches and had cream teas and all that. She enjoyed the work but said Kate Winslet was a little bit "starry".

I don't know Emma Thompson so can't comment on whether or not she's lovely, but she did a bloody good job with that screenplay!

AmateurNoun · 01/02/2025 18:21

She's a good actress, but not that nice.
