'Sense and Sensibility' is on BBC2 and my sis in law and I have been half watching it, whilst catching up and also MN-ing 😄

Both big fans of Emma Thompson here.

IMO she was a bit too old for the Sense and Sensibility role.

TheaBrandt · 01/02/2025 21:54

Met her in real life she’s lovely friend of a friend who has worked with her on films says so too.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/02/2025 21:55

Emma Thompson is lovely so she is.😊

The tabloids reported that she flew back for the demo but she didn't - she was flying back for work.

I like how she speaks up about unpopular issues despite the fact she gets shit for it. Also love her as an actress obvs.

Well the plane still left the same carbon footprint didnt it?

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2025 22:07

yes! I had forgotten his almost Dickensian wickedness in Paddington2 -
I think not many people can have seen one of Grant's other early films, made at about the same time as 4 weddings typecast him as a bumbling floppy haired grin - An Awfully Big Adventure, in which he was a most unpleasant character.

I suppose not unlike the other Hugh - Laurie - Jeeves and light comedy but actually good at playing some much darker roles too.

Trying to think if I've ever seen Emma Thompson playing anything other than more or less naice middle/upper class? Unlike Winslet who has taken on some grittier roles of late.

PullTheBricksDown · 01/02/2025 22:21

Wit. It's still an upper class role - she's a college professor - but follows her diagnosis with cancer. Thompson can do gritty.

Don't get people's problem with the line in Love Actually: she was acting? Shouldn't the scriptwriters be blamed for that?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 01/02/2025 22:21

Emma Thompson came from a privileged background? She's absolutely nothing like Stacey Solomon who came from a very normal background and was a teenage mum!!

That said I think she's a good actress and I love Sense and Sensibility. Alan Rickman is an amazing and beautiful Colonel.

I wondered today when I was watching it, did Lucy Steele know Edward was interested in Eleanor? Is that why she told Eleanor about the engagement? So that Eleanor wouldn't get her hopes up?

CeceliaImrie · 01/02/2025 22:32

I've never warmed to her. She felt like an older sterner version of Kate Winslet then we studied Remains Of the Day and watched the film. I have disliked her since.

stonebrambleboy · 01/02/2025 22:34

She was a Republican until she was offered a Damehood, same as Helen Mirren.

CeceliaImrie · 01/02/2025 22:35

Odd isn't it. I have neutral opinions on most actresses, well apart from Emma Watson who I can't stand but ET just grates on my tits, it's the poshness yet thinking she's cool act.

Yes she is very likeable. Smile I also like Kate Winslet too! Also in Sense And Sensibility. Both lovely ladies, and great actresses! 😄

blackandwhitefur · 01/02/2025 22:39

Love the film and think her performance is great though don't think her and Hugh Grant were a good match in this film. She looks way too mature and he looks about 18.

Violetparis · 01/02/2025 22:50

Can't stand her affected loveyness and hypocrisy. Makes me cringe.

CeceliaImrie · 01/02/2025 22:53

Gonna check out a couple of these Hugh Grant films mentioned.

@SheWaits having just savaged the way she comes across I would say that I actually like her politics. Why aren’t people with money allowed to say that society should be fairer?

Because it's hypocritical to campaign for higher taxes on travel for everyone else while swanning about on a private jet. One rule for me and another for theee...

She upset a farmer up our way a while back when she went into his field without permission to do an anti fracking protest.

I sat and watched the whole film again (and recorded it!) it is absolutely beautiful. It brings back lovely memories for me of a great friend (who was in the production team) and a place I lived in Devon for a while which was very near the location of the cottage. This friend visited us for a long weekend when she was on location - the weather was perfect, we went to beaches and had cream teas and all that. She enjoyed the work but said Kate Winslet was a little bit "starry".

I don't know Emma Thompson so can't comment on whether or not she's lovely, but she did a bloody good job with that screenplay!

Kate Winslet was only about 20 yo and had just filmed Titanic when they made S+S. I am guessing she was finding her feet with the massive fame that she knew was coming her way!

Arran2024 · 01/02/2025 22:58

She is so type-cast these days as a wry, middle class woman of a certain age who is seen as a bit of a loser- no husband that sort of thing. And I can't stand it. It's like Love Actually pigeon-holed her in this way and now she is stuck.

Velvian · 01/02/2025 22:59

I'm really not keen on her. I get quite cold and flippant vibes from her, beneath the surface.

Choice4567 · 01/02/2025 23:05

@Girliefriendlikespuppies yes Lucy Steele knew Edward liked Eleanor. And thought Eleanor might like him back. But she didn't tell her so she wouldn't get her hopes up. Lucy tells Eleanor about the engagement because she's saying 'back off, he's mine. Don't go after my man'. She is not a nice character at all!

GreylingsSkin · 01/02/2025 23:09

Worked with her on a stage show she was in, she was hands down one of the nicest celebrities I’ve ever met. She even arranged a Easter egg hunt for all the staff who had to work the long weekend and made sure everyone down to the cleaning staff got to join in. She’s extremely down to earth, as is Alan Rickman who came to watch her perform and charmed everyone with his lovely manners.

suburberphobe · 01/02/2025 23:10

I dunno she said some weird stuff when promoting her Leo Grande movie...

Loved that movie! Something completely different.

Just saw her on Sense and Sensibility on TV. On Mute (talking to my son who came home).

Brilliant actresss.

National treasure, I'd say.

What did she say?

MabelMora · 01/02/2025 23:22

Did you expect her to swim ?

I'd expect her to maybe not take flights if she's so passionate about climate change? She could stick to stage productions in London, or I'm sure the producers of Casualty would be happy to find a part for her if she was desperate for work 😏.

yeriknow · 01/02/2025 23:23

Agree with a pp who said they would probably find her quite intimidating in real life.

Also agree that she has an extreme level of confidence and self assurance.

I'm not sure if I would say I "like" her. I would say I am very envious of her, I would love to have her confidence and poise. But I agree she's had a very privileged life and as an actor isn't exactly doing any that worthwhile to particularly admire, and I get the impression she would be fairly cold and intimidating as a friend.

That being said, I find her interesting and funny and enjoy listening to her when she is interviewed.

But overall, I would say I am mostly just intrigued / beguiled by her confidence.
