'Sense and Sensibility' is on BBC2 and my sis in law and I have been half watching it, whilst catching up and also MN-ing 😄

Both big fans of Emma Thompson here.

@usbslot2 I don’t understand. How is ‘she’s very privileged’ a criticism? She’s privileged in the same way that every successful performer is privileged. Would you say the same of Stacey Solomon? I’m puzzled as to how success becomes a criticism of someone

She’s a hypocrite- she flew from LA to London for a climate change protest. Also thinks that women prisoners should be locked up with rapists if the rapist identifies as a woman. She’s the epitome of luxury beliefs for privileged people.

Did you expect her to swim ?

I didn't imply it as a criticism really more that she exists in a bit of a bubble and has said and done some tone deaf things in her time as have been noted on this thread, I don't think she is a malicious or bad person, I think she's fine but I'm not falling over myself to gush about her either.

WeegieGrannie · 01/02/2025 18:32

I thought she was great as Suzi Kettles.

Iceboy80 · 01/02/2025 18:34

No, she's a liberal and Labour supporter, so not really!

I don't think Stacey Soloman has been arguing for male rapists to be put in women's prisons.

Emma can hold her luxury beliefs knowing she is unlikely to go to prison or need a domestic violence shelter. She is privileged and not as nice or clever as she thinks she is.

MaloryJones · 01/02/2025 19:08

Some things about Her wind me up , ie the flights to and from Climate change protests.
However, she is a fantastic actress in my opinion, and I rate Her for that.

Yes. I mean, I like her too, but she’s the epitome of a certain kind of brisk Englishwoman. The scene in Love Actually where she tells Liam Neeson’s bereaved character to move on because no one likes a crybaby makes me see how the British Empire happened.

Yes, that's a good description, the brisk English woman. I like her, but I think if I knew her in real life, I'd find her both a bit irritating and a bit intimidating.

HolaLolaViola · 01/02/2025 19:27

I’ve never liked her as an actor. I think she’s a pita. She’s the female equivalent of Hugh Grant to me, lots of prevaricating, bumbling about and rubbing her face.
I don’t care what actors think or say about politics generally.

SallyWD · 01/02/2025 19:42

She's one of those people I can't really relate to because she seems to have supreme confidence.

I agree and I think she tries to cover it up with exaggerated English self deprecation

I never liked Hugh Grant till I saw him in A Very English Scandal & since then he's done many roles I wouldn't expect him to, all brilliant

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/02/2025 19:56

Her very public commentary about body insecurities are a little grating. I mean = she must know she is in better shape than, say, 95% of women her age? So although I know she could be screwed up by society's expectations of what naked women should look like - we all are, and she's on the way more acceptable side of the scale and she MUST be aware of it? And if she's not, she's lacking in general awareness somewhere.

This. She's a supporter of men who profess to be women and a massive climate change hypocrite, so no I don't admire her at all

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/02/2025 19:58

But I would add - she's obviously absurdly privileged, both in upbringing and career, but somehow reasonably likeable.

Justcallmebebes · 01/02/2025 20:02

Plus, she's a mediocre, at best, actress, she's not curing cancer, working with the elderly, disabled or sick. In fact she's not contributing to society at all so no, I don't admire her

he was a revelation in Florence Foster Jenkins, against La Streep no less !

The tabloids reported that she flew back for the demo but she didn't - she was flying back for work.

I like how she speaks up about unpopular issues despite the fact she gets shit for it. Also love her as an actress obvs.

I must be misremember because I though I saw her doing an interview saying she flew back early to show support.

She a good actress - can interview well - like many modern actors should probably say much less about personal politics - and apparently she was a supporter of Roman Polanski convicted of raping at 13 year old but then did that advert for charity against human trafficking - sort of very confused Hollywood morals.

stargirl1701 · 01/02/2025 20:26

Her Peter Rabbit books were lovely. As was her tale of the first Christmas Card.

It's pretty low and bigoted to dislike a person you never met because of their class.

Also maybe you are not aware, but people of a class get to have their own personalities too and may not behave 100% in accordance to your narrow views.

as Phyllida Law proved in the ‘Can I help you’ scene from ‘Saving Grace’ on YT

I blame the parents

Pollyanna87 · 01/02/2025 20:38

Wasn’t so lovely when she supported Polanski.

He was amazing in Paddington 2!! I think he is very talented and maybe underrated due to roles he has had over the years.
