Emma Thompson - she's just lovely isn't she?

'Sense and Sensibility' is on BBC2 and my sis in law and I have been half watching it, whilst catching up and also MN-ing 😄

Both big fans of Emma Thompson here.

OP posts:

I really like her, I think she's a great actress who has been in some brilliant films. I also just think she's a decent person, I know on here it's unpopular to be pro trans rights but she stands for what I do.

I'd also like to go to the pub with her!

I really dislike the phrase 'champagne socialist'. It assumes that only the poor or less well off can express opinions about social inequality. Life isn't black and white and there's nothing wrong with wealthy people having empathy just because they have more.
It's better than being a heartless bastard surely.

Madcats · 02/02/2025 11:38

Back in the 80's somebody at the BBC decided that it would be a really good idea to commission Emma Thompson to write a TV show called Thompson(?) in which Emma starred.

I think it was supposed to be a comedy show, with a bit of singing and dancing thrown in.

Some loved it, others hated it. I was in the latter camp.

I was more interested in The Young Ones and Comic Strip.

@Funkyslippers I agree, he was only good at one type of role or he was typecast but he's done some very different roles in the last 10 years and really surprised me. He said it's because he's too old and podgy to be a heart throb anymore, and while I don't like the self depreciation, I like the acknowledgment that men don't become hunkier with age and can keep playing love interests to much younger women.

Although just to reply to myself, he did marry a younger woman in real life so.. 😐

I remember that. I believe she really wanted to do comedy and was devastated when it didn't work out. I find that in most of her parts the comedy is trying to escape- I just can't watch her. But I liked her in Peter's Friends and Tutti Frutti

I absolutely love Peter's Friends! I need to watch it again. Never seems to be on TV. The whole cast are brilliant

She's about to star in a film about a case that led to the Gender Recognition Act (which was the start of all this mess), so I think all signs point to "no".

EDIT I thought it was the Goodwin case but it's the Bellinger case (both cases led to the creation of the GRA)

Edited

Oh dear

Well yes and I bet some of those on here just hate Angela Rayner who socially is very much the opposite.

Oh god yes, I think at the time she and Branagh were the 'golden couple' and I suppose she and whoever commissioned the series just assumed she could do comedy but it really didn't work. I seem to remember starting to watch it with high hopes but it fell flat.

Typecast, as per my comment upthread re An Awfully Big Adventure.

Tuftykitten · 02/02/2025 16:00

She comes from a privileged background and had a head start in life because of her parents' careers.
I doubt she's ever faced any real struggle in life.
She's had a charmed life.

I think she's a hypocrite too.

Greygreencheckswithblue · 02/02/2025 16:10

HermioneWeasley · 01/02/2025 18:01

She’s a hypocrite- she flew from LA to London for a climate change protest. Also thinks that women prisoners should be locked up with rapists if the rapist identifies as a woman. She’s the epitome of luxury beliefs for privileged people.

I love the way people just repeat stories they have read in the right wing press.

Edited: I have mixed feelings about the trans issue. I was more anti-trans until the likes of Trump started supporting it, and now I am questioning myself!

She literally does have to fly back and forth though across the Atlantic to do her job. It is mostly ocean! She is an actor.

I like her! I wouldn’t describe her as nice. But I am not sure if “nice” is a great compliment tbh. I would say she is confident and knows her own mind. And that’s a good thing. And I generally enjoy her performances.

I think she is good at her job too.

dayswithaY · 02/02/2025 19:31

Then she needs to realise she is part of the problem. You can’t lecture people about their carbon footprint but then excuse yourself from this because your work takes you across the Atlantic.

I suppose she means that the ordinary little people should give up their annual return plane trip to Majorca because she can’t possibly deprive the world of her work.

She needs to think before she speaks. Very privileged behaviour.

Exactly this. They really do see themselves as being on a different plane to the plebs (on whom they depend). 🤮

Presumably she is talking about holidays? Unnecessary frivolous flights? Not necessary work trips? I don’t think that is privileged. I think it is common sense and something we should all be doing.

dayswithaY · 02/02/2025 20:44

Of course I forgot Emma’s flights aren’t frivolous, she’s practically a key worker.

Or maybe she could just work in the British film industry seeing as she feels so strongly about her carbon footprint.

ARainyNightInSoho · 02/02/2025 21:18

I have noticed that anybody expressing an opinion you don’t like is ‘preaching’ or ‘lecturing’. It’s a free country. She’s allowed to say what she thinks about the environment.

Rumpoleoftheballet · 02/02/2025 21:37

No. She sat on a boat holding everything up in Oxford Street for a climate protest and then left to fly to the States. What an absolute f'ing hypocrite.

You may not value her job. But that is her job. and to do her job, she has to fly frequently to the US and back.

And you simply don’t know what you are talking about if you think ET has not worked, and does not work, in the British Film industry; have you not heard of Peter’s Friends, The Remains of the Day, Love Actually, Sense and Sensibility, Harry Potter Series, Nanny McPhee series, Bridget Jones’s Baby to name a few?

More recently she has filmed a tv series in Cornwall called Down Cemetary Road, and Leo Grande was filmed in London and Norfolk.

Also, she was recently an executive producer of Ben Withshaw’s Good Boy which was filmed in Glastonbury.

So it appears that she is indeed trying to stick to her principles as far as possible.

Nobody knows whether anyone is "lovely " from seeing them act.

Thinking it’s normal to go Majorca annually is pretty privileged thinking also………

We’re all guilty of assuming our experience is the norm, and that we are not living lives of luxury. And nobody is achieving perfect environmental behaviour because nobody is perfect. I can’t see much difference between this woman and any of the rest of us in terms of self-delusion.

Mangoandbroccoli · 02/02/2025 22:32

I've had the pleasure of working with her and she is incredibly lovely. No one is perfect (and no one can possibly know what an individual is like from seeing them in a film etc) but my personal experience of working with her is that she is a wonderful person, humble, kind and generous with her time.

Hilarious! 🙄

I happen to be a big fan. Is that ok with you?
