Seems to be a massive memory loss regarding L/Ds hoovering up Con seats last July.

I think it's more a case of above/below the fold. "LibDems doing OK" doesn't sell clicks. whereas "Farage fucks Tories over" is box office gold. And in a land where performance beats policy, that matters. Every. Single. Time.

We've also moved on a generation. Not the country, but the accepted wisdom about what sells. Yes there will still be the odd weirdo knitting their own yoghurt who can deliver a 4 hour unscripted lecture on where the LibDems lost it in 2010. However that will mean little to someone who was actually born in 2010.

In years to come (long after we are dust) historians will ponder on the peculiar resilience of how the UK retained tripartite politics almost a century after Labour supposedly supplanted the Liberals. And in a lesson we should bear in mind, whilst the US has been frozen in 1776, the country they ejected as rulers quietly did progress. In much the same way that "the EU" the UK left in 2020 has moved on since the EU the UK voted to leave in 2016.

Fair enough.

You are aware of the irony that absolutist stances like that are a gift to the less scrupulous ? It's the flip side of "Always voted Labour*, me" that someone proudly says as they the wonder why the Labour party does nothing for them and everything for the Johnny-come-lately voters.

Our current system completely smothers nuance. And most of my votes in life have been much less about support for the candidate and much more about trying to keep the others out.

Anyhows, I am still hoping for a small revolution and the LibDems - for all their faults - soak up the disaffected Tory-turned Labour voters who still have some morals left.

Incidentally I am wondering what fresh hell 2028/9 could bring if we end up with no majority party, but a possibility of a LibDem-[Reform/Tory/Labour] coalition. What would the outcome of a split like Reform:150, Labour 250, Tories 75, LibDems 150 ??? We can only hope a Tory-Reform coalition would still not reach a majority.

One to watch is Reforms disinterest in electoral reform. They could well try to create a "we wuz robbed" narrative to fuel the next post election riots that I am sure they have alerted their core to be ready for.

*Or tory.

I am aware, yes. As a natural Labour voter I did vote a lib Dem in the election which led to the coalition - largely to keep Tories out. I felt so betrayed. Every time I think maybe they should be considered, I look at the voting. They are still Tories at heart, albeit one nation ones. That’s not what I want to vote for.
It’s all very depressing. I’m in Wales and I have Plaid as a progressive party to turn to, but even if every seat in Wales went Plaid for Westminster (which it won’t) they’d still have no influence. I’m becoming more and more indy-curious.

@SerendipityJane - even taking that into account, she fluffed every point.

I suppose the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about, which is a crumb for Badenoch

Trump is giving Ukraine to Putin

Trump says he will begin negotiations with Putin to end the war in Ukraine. Any "deal" will be scripted by Moscow: Russia keeps territory it has stolen, no Nato membership for Kyiv, US military assistance ends. In short, a recipe for betrayal and further war

Well I hope this is where all parties speak out in support of Zelensky.

One of the few areas where I agreed with Johnson was Ukraine.

That still talks about illegal entry. No such thing for an asylum seeker. I wish they’d sort out all the terminology. Unorthodox entry, fine. Illegal? Nope.

Agree. It is the language of Reform.

I am so pissed off with them, swimming in the gutter like this. Blair did it too, remember the mugs?

Reminds me how exacting Churchill was in his language. Almost exclusive and deliberately Anglo Saxon at extremes.

I have bbc news as my ‘FlashBriefing’ on Alexa. Lead story this morning was the (admittedly small) growth in the last quarter of last year. The only comment on the short news was from a business rep saying they are surprised to hear it because that’s not what businesses are reporting. It’s objectively the case. Why give slave to opinion that adds nothing?

It's interesting about Reeves because ultimately it seems no substantive action was taken against her by HBOS. Fiddling your expenses is usually a cast iron way to be sacked because it shows you are taking money from the organization for your own advantage, whether by gift cards or otherwise.

Therefore if they want rid of you, this is the easiest way to do it. That does not seem to be have been the outcome here.

It's one thing to say Reeves used these cards to her own advantage, but if it was effectively underwritten by senior management then the chances were HBOS would do nothing or write off the cost as Reeves had not actually breached her contract of employment.

Anyway, she has to survive for the next six months. If the economy picks up she will manage that. Unless these claims are being driven by her own side, in which case, then she has real problems.

The immediate response is to scour other news outlets to see what they are hiding.

ONS report explained:

2024 FULL YEAR UK TRADE DATA from ONS is out today

Goods exports fell 5.1% 2023-2024, while imports declined 0.5%, reflecting weakness in manufacturing

In contrast, services exports rose 3.4% Y-o-Y & services imports grew 3.3%, reflecting robust services output

The fact that two (including RR) of the three managers left shortly afterwards and the other went off sick and never returned is suggestive of a narrative (whether true or not) however.

I really hoped Labour would manage to be better than this - particularly knowing that they would be far more heavily scrutinised by the right wing press that the Tories ever were.
