I've just spent £200 on socks

Feeling guilty but I am so sick of matching up socks which are all quite similar but not a match. I swear as a family we have vast amounts of socks and yet never enough, cold house means we often wear two pairs each and kids have clean ones for bed/different ones for sports. I have a basket mountain of mismatched socks and I can't remember when I had new ones.

So, I've bought the four of us 20 pairs each in a different pattern/style and hope this is going to make my sock matching life easier!

Why do you need 20 pairs each?!

I found socks with the days of the week so got everyone 3 sets each.
This is the set I got DH

Blue for DS, pastels for DD, black for DH & brown for me. Absolutely no chance of them getting mixed up now. There's a pair for every day of the week, they say Monday - Sunday on them.

I've been thinking of doing the same with everyone's pants/boxers

I had to get rid of all the day of the week socks. DH and three of the kids just merrily wore any old pair where DC4 and I were left feeling itchy seeing Friday socks on a Monday.

How do you deal with older kids who all MUST have Nike socks of the acceptable style that are all identical. Driving me mad!!

ConflictofInterest · 30/01/2025 14:35

Ah I was hoping you were going to say they were from some high quality alpaca wool sock maker so you'd only bought 5 pairs but they were worth it for the stunning quality and cloud like walking sensation and recommend the brand. Socks seem so badly made these days I find them very disappointing within a few washes. I have never worn matching socks or noticed or cared about any other persons socks so I think you could save yourself a lot of stress and just have everyone wearing the mismatched ones. My kids like to choose a different sock character per foot, it's more fun.

I'll admit it would drive me up the wall seeing somebody wearing the wrong day socks, luckily my family is quite good with it, although that's probably only because I lay out all our clothing each Sunday for the week ahead.

If left to their own devices I'd probably find both kids and DH wearing Tuesday & Sunday socks on a Wednesday.

Writing this down has made me realise I sound absolutely mental and need to get out more

Get you!

You must be super rich!

NerrSnerr · 30/01/2025 14:37

@ThatUniqueKoala how old are your children? Why on earth are you laying your husband's clothes out?

Kokomjolk · 30/01/2025 14:38

It's enough hassle trying to find a pair of clean socks that match without them having to say the right day of the week on it. That wouldn't help at all in this house!

We're constantly losing socks in the wash and DS goes through them like nothing I've seen so I am constantly buying new socks. I have tried all different brands, he will make holes in any socks within 2 months of being given them. 😖

DH has loads of identical black socks and I think it is a good system because it doesn't matter if one gets lost in the wash or gets a hole - I just love patterned socks too much to do it!

Onlyonekenobe · 30/01/2025 14:39

Hang on, your children wear socks in bed???

How much space do you have in your house that you can lay out a week's worth of clothes for everyone each week? And....whyyy?

my mind is boggling

Agree!!! So annoying.

They all had new ones for Christmas, so since then, I put all Nike socks in a basket in the airing cupboard.

Any other socks go on their rooms.

Nah, days of the week socks are just.. no. So stressful when nobody else in the house cares whether they're the right day or not.

Best thing to do is just get a load of plain black socks and let everyone wear them.

IamwhoIsayIam · 30/01/2025 14:45

We had this as children but my family went further with the invention of the 'sock basket'. All the family socks in one basket, all black or white, pick two and move along.

No it didn't bother us to wear family socks - they all came fresh out the washing machine and we all had similar size feet!

A lot of kids wear socks in bed, you can get cosy bed socks

Socks in bed,
why?
Laying out all the family's clothes for the week,
where? Why?
Wearing mismatched socks,
just no <<shudder>>
Family socks,
WTF and how do they fit? Our feet sizes range from a 4- me and a 12- DS 14

@ChocolateTruffleAssortment Use different coloured fabric pens and put a tiny dot on the sole of the sock! My DD gets a red dot and my DS gets blue.

Spidey66 · 30/01/2025 14:58

OK get the socks in bed during the winter, but why clean ones? Why not just the same as the ones they've had on all day?

Socks in bed,
why?

Because some people feel the cold more especially in extremeties. It's winter. So it's cold. Not everyone can afford to leave their heating on overnight. Or to put it up very high in the evening before bed to ensure feet and the rest of you is properly warm when you climb under the (cold, along with the rest of the room) duvet. If my feet get cold it's hard to warm them up again without taking a bath. You bet I'm a socks person. I like toasty warm feet.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 30/01/2025 14:59

I only pair my socks up. The kids and DP get theirs delivered in a pile unmatched. And life goes on....

Because athlete's foot is a thing. It's not good to be a rancid scumbag you know 😁

Kokomjolk · 30/01/2025 15:00

Lots of people wear socks in bed. They keep your feet warm if you're prone to cold feet. I sometimes do and sometimes don't depending on the temperature and how I'm feeling. This cannot be such a mystery, surely?

That's grim. I would rather put clean ones on at bed and wear them the next day! Not an all-day-worn sock in bed...

diddl · 30/01/2025 15:03

I'm guessing there's a reason that 2prs of socks is preferable to slippers?

HPandthelastwish · 30/01/2025 15:03

As soon as DD and I became the same shoe size I got rid of all our old mismatched socks and brought black ones. Supermarket ones all the same apart from a little stitched dinosaur / monster as have to get from the men's section. No more messing around having to match them. DD and I dont care about sharing as she steals the rest of my clothes most the time.
