I've just spent £200 on socks

Feeling guilty but I am so sick of matching up socks which are all quite similar but not a match. I swear as a family we have vast amounts of socks and yet never enough, cold house means we often wear two pairs each and kids have clean ones for bed/different ones for sports. I have a basket mountain of mismatched socks and I can't remember when I had new ones.

So, I've bought the four of us 20 pairs each in a different pattern/style and hope this is going to make my sock matching life easier!

We had this as children but my family went further with the invention of the 'sock basket'. All the family socks in one basket, all black or white, pick two and move along.

No it didn't bother us to wear family socks - they all came fresh out the washing machine and we all had similar size feet!

I was brought up like this - first up best socks 🧦

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 30/01/2025 21:28

Well initially I was shocked but now that I think about it even with slippers socks don’t last more than a couple of months I think it’s what they’re made out of nowadays.
I live in a small house but socks just go missing

im actually a bit staggered that no one has admitted to really loving wearing a pair of socks that matches their outfit. It’s like having matching underwear. A quiet source of inner satisfaction and rightness with the world…. 😊😉😂

I wouldnt feel any satisfaction from either of those.

OK get the socks in bed during the winter, but why clean ones? Why not just the same as the ones they've had on all day?

😝 Gross

I don’t wear matching underwear either. I couldn’t care less. I do however get disproportionate joy from my socks. It takes all sorts and I love people’s weird, harmless little droplets of happiness

I have so many questions

Wish DP had thought to ask some before he decided he'd start dealing with the washing because I was pulling some seriously long hours at work.

Questions like 'What would happen if I put all of your brand new Merino socks into the tumble dryer for over an hour on hot?' or 'Is it OK to put your new knitted dress in with the bedlinen and my daughter's school trainers with the velcro left open at 40?'.

Why do you need 20 pairs each?!

It won't be 20 each. You won't get 80 pairs fir £200

This thread is proving to be fascinating.
Socks in bed,
why?
Laying out all the family's clothes for the week,
where? Why?
Wearing mismatched socks,
just no <<shudder>>
Family socks,
WTF and how do they fit? Our feet sizes range from a 4- me and a 12- DS 14

Reading this in bed. With my socks on

dothedanceofjoy · 30/01/2025 21:09

I wear socks in bed. They are bedsocks, not bog standard cotton day socks. They're wool or cashmere and loose, not restrictive. They're usually off by the morning, but I need them when I get into bed and it's cold.

I have strong sensory preferences too, but I'm shuddering at the thought of bare feet all the time. I loathe bare feet even in the summer. Socks and sheepskin slippers all the way, and ideally pyjamas tucked into the socks so there aren't flappy bits or draughts.

Finally someone on this thread is talking some sense. Strongly agree on every point.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 30/01/2025 22:27

I wear socks for bed. Every. Single. Night. Always clean ones I might add.

I’m perimenopausal and I also also have a condition where I struggle to regulate my temperature so for the most part, I am always hot. I wear vest tops year round. Sometimes with a cardi or hoodie round the house. I also wear flip flips inside the house during the day for most of the year and outside when it’s ‘acceptable’. However, come bedtime, my feet are like blocks of ice and I can’t sleep without socks. Also, if I didn’t wear socks I’d run the risk of DH and I’s feet catching each other and that would be awful. Just the thought makes me shudder. (There’s nothing wrong with our feet either, I just hate the thought of feet touching feet)!

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 30/01/2025 22:29

It don’t matter what you do they’ll always go missing. I’ve got a bag for life full, sometimes the others turn up others have been in the bag for about 3 years.

okydokethen · 30/01/2025 22:30

To answer, I don’t lay out DH (or kids) socks out but I do wash them and match them.

Part of this obscene cost is because I’ve bought Nike socks for one child.

Can’t get all the same as we’re different sizes and DC have different requirements to DH and I. So we’ve got 20 of our own preferred style/use.

Living in a building site and it gets very cold, kids and I wear (always clean fluffy) bed socks - DD has reynauds so wears them year round.

I can’t stand the feel of mismatched socks. The different ankle heights for one..

Day of the week socks requires to much organising i wouldn’t cope with wrong days!

We wear double socks AND slippers at home, still wear double when out in winter.

I use a tumble dryer mostly but on line I would line them up in pairs.

20 seemed like a lot but 15 didn’t seem enough. Seriously do people have sock drawers with just a few odd socks? We have so many - if I can recycle them I will but I cannot wait to get rid of the mountain of old ones and downsize (!)

(From Next and it was £203)

Op we just share the same black socks here I gave up matching years ago.

I buy dh size 11. 5 and they perfectly fit me! Black asds

RedRosesParmaViolets · 30/01/2025 22:42

I am size 5

hereismydog · 30/01/2025 22:46

All socks are communal socks in my house. DP is wearing Powerpuff Girls socks today because those were the first ones to come out of the shared sock drawer.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/01/2025 22:48

@Spongebobpatrick I put a programme on my iPad and make an evening out of it 😂

Greengagesummer65 · 30/01/2025 22:55

Have never heard of people wearing bed socks. I just pop a hot water bottle in the bed.

How do they fit you? I've worn DH's socks in an emergency and they were so baggy and uncomfortable.

Plus don't you have different socks for different occasions?
DC4 likes to match his socks to his t-shirts when at home, but needs black socks for school.
DC3 only wears black Nike or Montirex (or maybe Monterrain I get muddled)
DC1 has black for work and white sports or trainer socks for home
DH has work boot socks, office socks, home socks and trainer socks.

chargeitup · 31/01/2025 07:51

@CherryMarigold oh I'm wrong!!! It's 20 each.
That's an average of £2.50 per pair. I've never had socks that price before

WingingItSince1973 · 30/01/2025 15:17

I have one of those Ikea bags under my bed with the odd socks. Every now and then I tip them all out and play a game of pairs 😂😂😂 Is it sad that I find great satisfaction finding matching pairs? 😂😂😂

I do this but in a pillowcase. When my dds were preschoolers they helped me pair them and I called it The Sock Game!

We have a basket. The sock game is DH’s job and then he gets cross that there is a pile of freshly paired socks that none of us claim 🤦‍♀️ I do sometimes wonder if there are a couple of centipedes living secretly in our house

They are excellent. Suggest you try with the hot water bottle

Mingenious · 31/01/2025 09:36

We have about a million pairs of plain black socks that are considered communal.

life is far to short for pairing socks.

okydokethen · 31/01/2025 10:52

@chargeitup

Not sure if you think they are cheap or expensive but per sock pair:
Cheapest £1.40
Most expensive £3.30 - Nike

@Eyerollexpert
Seriously, why is it gross, unless the kids have been running through a muddy field with no shoes on? Why the hell would you need a clean pair of socks just for bed then another clean pair in the morning? They're not going to get grubby in bed, are they?

I'm not a total clean freak but have reasonable standards of hygiene eg shower every day, hair wash every other day, clean clothes minimum of every other day in winter ( more in summer), clean and tidy house but can't think why anyone needs 2 clean pairs of socks a day!
