I've just spent £200 on socks

Feeling guilty but I am so sick of matching up socks which are all quite similar but not a match. I swear as a family we have vast amounts of socks and yet never enough, cold house means we often wear two pairs each and kids have clean ones for bed/different ones for sports. I have a basket mountain of mismatched socks and I can't remember when I had new ones.

So, I've bought the four of us 20 pairs each in a different pattern/style and hope this is going to make my sock matching life easier!

Oh, you sweet summer child.

You'll be taking 5 Thursdays, 2 Wednesdays, 6 Saturdays and a Sunday with a hole it out of the machine and wondering what on earth happens on Tuesdays for all of them to have disappeared without trace by the third week in.

Honestly I wouldn't expect anything different

Solidarity OP! It was a glorious day in our house when everyone fitted into the 4-8 size and then we got communist socks.

Any colour you like, must be black,

Only exception is bed socks, but nobody loses those for some reason.

Chuckling at Communist socks! 😂

Twenty pairs of socks? Twenty? Twenty??

Twenty pairs of socks?

Are you spiders?

That's grim. I would rather put clean ones on at bed and wear them the next day! Not an all-day-worn sock in bed...

That’s why I prefer showers in the evening to a morning shower - got to be clean getting into bed

I just saw you do. I am speechless for once.

YOU want to do it, but your DH doesn’t want to pick his own clothes? Or your children and their and independency skills just doesn’t matter? 😂😩 This can’t be real.

Edited

Where did I say my DH doesn't want to pick his own? Sometimes he ignores what I've laid out and gets something different, which isn't a problem. It just stays in the compartment until I refill it, it's no different from being folded separately in drawers.

I shouldn't have to add this but I will, my oldest is disabled and needs to have his clothes sorted for him or he'd probably end up trying to put a sock on as a t-shirt, I even have to dress him. Also my daughter actually helps me with it a lot of the time (because she wants to) I'll ask her what she wants to wear on each day, and we'll do it together.

Do you not get your children to help out with household tasks? Or do something nice for your husband just to make both your mornings a little bit easier? I'm struggling to understand why you're speechless

Lorrymum · 30/01/2025 20:22

Slightly disappointed that you didn't blow £200 on one pair of socks.
I was looking forward to a description of totally extravagant, beautiful socks.

7 for day time
7 for night-time
6 spare for laundry days or to double up when it's really cold. Or if one gets a hole/lost...etc

I actually love your style - genuinely! This is the kind of hyper organisation I secretly aspire to but don’t have the commitment for… I’m generally a ‘clothes laid out the night before’ kind of person. Not for DH though, tbh, but why on Earth shouldn’t you?? Everyone loves differently and you’re not harming anyone so I don’t really get the snippy comments. I love people’s quirks. I’m coming all over Monica from friends and wanting to marry you a tiny bit 😂

AlmosttimeforChristmas · 30/01/2025 20:41

im actually a bit staggered that no one has admitted to really loving wearing a pair of socks that matches their outfit. It’s like having matching underwear. A quiet source of inner satisfaction and rightness with the world…. 😊😉😂

AuntieObnoxious · 30/01/2025 20:41

My DS did odd socks day one year at primary. From then on he refused to wear matched socks. He’s now at college and is quite infamous there for wearing odd socks & shorts all year round. It’s great as there’s no matching of socks. I also wear odd socks at the weekend as a special treat 😀.
Apart from my work socks are all black so no matching, my DD are black with coloured toes & it’s up to them if they match the socks. Dh has mainly the same socks so no matching there.

Careful they don't make your diamond shoes any tighter.

A bit different from
To answer why.... because I want to. I do my DHs clothing because again, I want to.

I still can’t imagine a DH who wouldn’t want to sort out his own outfit. Got absolutely nothing to do with not doing nice things for him. And I don’t understand your question about do I not get my children to help with household tasks? My children are now young adults and both of us obviously made them help out like most parents would.

Hopefully it won’’t enter my dd’s mind to pick out her future dh’s clothes for the week. She is used to her father buying, washing, ironing and being picky about his work clothes though. However, each to their own and I do appreciate that your system is very good for your disabled child. It must be hard work and you do what you have to, no doubt.

But if he did, he probably wouldn’t wear his Friday socks. It would be the favourite Sunday socks every day.

dothedanceofjoy · 30/01/2025 21:09

I wear socks in bed. They are bedsocks, not bog standard cotton day socks. They're wool or cashmere and loose, not restrictive. They're usually off by the morning, but I need them when I get into bed and it's cold.

I have strong sensory preferences too, but I'm shuddering at the thought of bare feet all the time. I loathe bare feet even in the summer. Socks and sheepskin slippers all the way, and ideally pyjamas tucked into the socks so there aren't flappy bits or draughts.

They would definitely end up as socks for cats here. It's definitely not intentional, but I had to instigate a rule of IF IT'S MINE PUT IT ON THE AIRER AND LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE after some virtual foot binding experiences of a morning.

Beyond the price, it states made in Italy but also "Handmade by artisans at a female run nonprofit in Uruguay". Which is it?! And for that price, why aren't the artisans being given enough to make a profit?!

Tonkall · 30/01/2025 21:24

I did similar to OP and have never looked back.

Can't believe we ever had lots of different socks each. What a waste of time that was. Now DH (for example) has about 16 pairs of identical black socks in the same style. No problems pairing them up, plus if one of them gets a hole in it, I don't need to throw the other one away.

TheyAreNotAngelsTheyDontCareAtAll · 30/01/2025 21:27

ThatUniqueKoala · 30/01/2025 14:36

I'll admit it would drive me up the wall seeing somebody wearing the wrong day socks, luckily my family is quite good with it, although that's probably only because I lay out all our clothing each Sunday for the week ahead.

If left to their own devices I'd probably find both kids and DH wearing Tuesday & Sunday socks on a Wednesday.

Writing this down has made me realise I sound absolutely mental and need to get out more

Weeellll, I wasn't going to say anything but, yes, yes you do need to get out more!
And ditch the day-themed socks!
😃😃

katepilar · 30/01/2025 21:27

I dont understand how is this ment to solve your problem. You need 20 pairs of exactly same socks for that.
