I've just spent £200 on socks

Feeling guilty but I am so sick of matching up socks which are all quite similar but not a match. I swear as a family we have vast amounts of socks and yet never enough, cold house means we often wear two pairs each and kids have clean ones for bed/different ones for sports. I have a basket mountain of mismatched socks and I can't remember when I had new ones.

So, I've bought the four of us 20 pairs each in a different pattern/style and hope this is going to make my sock matching life easier!

Because athlete's foot is a thing. It's not good to be a rancid scumbag you know 😁

Yes I would wear clean socks in bed but for the last 20 years I wear the same t-shirt in bed as I wear outside as I cannot see the point in changing it for a clean one when I'm going to have a shower in the morning.

If I had to share at night then obviously I would put a clean t-shirt on.

I only pair my socks up. The kids and DP get theirs delivered in a pile unmatched. And life goes on....

Same here. A lot of these issues arise when one person is doing everything for everyone.

It's never occurred to me to think about whether someone else has easy access to matching socks.

Flossflower · 30/01/2025 15:09

Because my feet are so large I have to wear men’s socks. So as not to mix them with my husband’s I have sewn a pink thread inside the ribbing on the inside of the sock.

Me and the 2 dcs all have the same sized feet so all our socks live in a box in the utlitliy. They are all varying colours and styles so we all just pick the pair we fancy that day.

Dh wears boring very long black socks so all of his live in his underwear drawer.

AwaitingFreedom · 30/01/2025 15:13

I had men's all black socks (they are longer on the leg, bliss!).
DD1 had women's all black socks.
DD2 had women's black socks with a little motif on them, Taz, aliens, animals, whatever.
DH had men's black socks with coloured toes.

Then the DD had fluffy socks for bed. DD1 had orange or pink hues and DD2 had the green or blue hues.

They paired up their own, or just shoved them in their own drawers. Not my problem once they were washed/dried. Made life so much easier as you could spot whose socks they were at ten paces.

OK get the socks in bed during the winter, but why clean ones? Why not just the same as the ones they've had on all day?

Yuck. Sweaty socks in bed is gross. However on the odd occasion I wear socks in bed for warmth I'd happily wear them for the next day, no floor dirt and not Sweaty in bed like they are in shoes.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/01/2025 15:17

I have one of those Ikea bags under my bed with the odd socks. Every now and then I tip them all out and play a game of pairs 😂😂😂 Is it sad that I find great satisfaction finding matching pairs? 😂😂😂

yourmaw · 30/01/2025 15:24

Any twos a pair

Ah I was hoping you were going to say they were from some high quality alpaca wool sock maker so you'd only bought 5 pairs but they were worth it for the stunning quality and cloud like walking sensation and recommend the brand. Socks seem so badly made these days I find them very disappointing within a few washes. I have never worn matching socks or noticed or cared about any other persons socks so I think you could save yourself a lot of stress and just have everyone wearing the mismatched ones. My kids like to choose a different sock character per foot, it's more fun.

Same! I long to be wealthy enough to have endless pairs of fancy socks :( At present, I just get standard black ones from Tesco - I can't imagine anyone's ever going to examine them closely enough to determine whether they came from the exact same batch, so if I get a hole in one I don't need to throw out the pair.

This thread is proving to be fascinating.
Socks in bed,
why?

Because some people feel the cold more especially in extremeties. It's winter. So it's cold. Not everyone can afford to leave their heating on overnight. Or to put it up very high in the evening before bed to ensure feet and the rest of you is properly warm when you climb under the (cold, along with the rest of the room) duvet. If my feet get cold it's hard to warm them up again without taking a bath. You bet I'm a socks person. I like toasty warm feet.

Yes, I suppose. I forget that people don't share my sensory oddities! I can just about wear socks with shoes but need them off as soon as I get in. The thought of socks in bed makes me feel claustrophobic.

ThatUniqueKoala · 30/01/2025 17:34

@CherryMarigold @upshot To answer where, we each have one of these in our wardrobes, every Sunday I organised school uniforms, nursery clothing, work clothes, pyjamas and underwear into the 7 compartment so in the morning it's just a case of grab everything from that compartment, quick steam iron if needed. Takes probably 20 minutes.

To answer why.... because I want to. And it saves a lot of time in the mornings

@NerrSnerr my children are 6 & 3. I do my DHs clothing because again, I want to.

I'm sure no one has said this, but 20 pairs each 😮! Good Lord.

Magpiecomplex · 30/01/2025 17:44

CherryMarigold · 30/01/2025 14:32

I had to get rid of all the day of the week socks. DH and three of the kids just merrily wore any old pair where DC4 and I were left feeling itchy seeing Friday socks on a Monday.

Even worse would be a mismatched "pair" of Wednesday on one foot and Friday on the other, on a Monday. 😱

Plonkydonkey · 30/01/2025 17:47

I don't wear matching socks. It has saved my sanity. Odd socks. I love them. I love bold bright patterns as well.

No more spending ages pairing socks

eightIsNewNine · 30/01/2025 17:51

I understand getting 20 pairs each - it means that the whole set will last longer and be similarly washed up while lasting.

I don't understand the days in week setup - that goes directly opposite the idea that any two are a pair and that they should get all similarly worn out.

GooseberryBeret · 30/01/2025 18:02

I hope you didn’t buy them from M&S. Their bastard socks shrink so if they were labelled 5-7 they will end up not fitting feet any bigger than size 4. Might not be true of their men’s socks, but the women’s socks and school socks I bought have all shrunk.

Corymoor Socks!

MaroonyBalloony · 30/01/2025 18:13

The 20 socks person is not the same person as the day-of-the-week maniac

SpidersAreShitheads · 30/01/2025 18:24

I realised the other day that I don't own any socks. Not a single pair.

This may not be the thread for me 😂

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 30/01/2025 18:36

As soon as my DCs were old enough (mid-late primary), they became responsible for their own socks and underwear. I washed and dried them, and then they claimed what was theirs and took it back to their own rooms, socks were not paired, that was up to them.
I have never bought days of the week socks, although I believe at one point they all got a set of daily pants, but I can't believe they cared about which day they wore them on!
Now as adults who don't live at home I have one DD who sorts her washing, pairs socks, folds underwear and puts it away promptly and another who doesn't care if her socks match or not and just shoves her underwear in a drawer.

What do you wear on your feet? Or do you only wear flip flops?

I like that hanging thingy, but does that mean everyone has clean clothes all through every day? And clean pjs everyday?

Mirabai · 30/01/2025 18:49

Y’all need to buy sheepskin slippers then you don’t need so many socks.

ThatUniqueKoala · 30/01/2025 18:56

I'm not sure I understand your question.

Each compartment is big enough to fit a full day of clothing and pyjamas. My son's for example will have school top, trousers, jumper, pants & socks plus pyjamas for him to change into for bed.

We don't have pyjamas in every compartment, usually change then 2/3 times a week
