I've just spent £200 on socks

Feeling guilty but I am so sick of matching up socks which are all quite similar but not a match. I swear as a family we have vast amounts of socks and yet never enough, cold house means we often wear two pairs each and kids have clean ones for bed/different ones for sports. I have a basket mountain of mismatched socks and I can't remember when I had new ones.

So, I've bought the four of us 20 pairs each in a different pattern/style and hope this is going to make my sock matching life easier!

That’s what I mean your dcs have clean trousers and jumper everyday? Obviously pants and socks. You and your dh have everything clean everyday?

What do you wear on your feet? Or do you only wear flip flops?

If I'm at home, then it's bare feet all of the time, all year round. If I'm in the home or back garden, you won't ever find me wearing shoes or socks, regardless of the weather.

To go out, I wear flip-flops for as much of the year as I can.

I'm self-employed and WFH 100% which dates back to 2010, so no need for work attire.

I do have a variety of shoes/boots/trainers that I wear if I need to leave the house and it's not flip-flop weather. But they're on rotation so don't ever seem to get smelly. I have washed shoes in the washing machine before. We have several people in the house who are extremely sensitive to smells, myself included, so it's something that I'm very vigilant about. DP's latest slippers bloody stink so we are quite sensitive to smelly feet!

Buying decent, good-quality shoes that don't make your feet sweaty seems to help. Also, I'm normally only out of the house for 2-3 hours at a time plus there are long gaps between wearing the shoes, so probably they don't have the chance to get smelly!

Due to circumstances at home, I've not taken part in sports for the last few years or gone hiking - and I would have needed socks for either of those activities. I'm hoping to get back into racket sports later this year so probably need to get some socks at that point. The thought of wearing socks though makes me feel very uncomfortable so it will be a necessary evil! 😅

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 30/01/2025 19:10

Does everyone only have one ‘type’ of sock though?

I need a different sock dependent on the activity. Gym socks, hiking socks, trainer socks etc. I would be horrified to have 20 pairs of the same sock.

How do you deal with older kids who all MUST have Nike socks of the acceptable style that are all identical. Driving me mad!!

This. I only have one 10yr old son and he will only wear white Nike ankle socks. And trying to match up the varying shades of "white" drives me mad.

Hang on, your children wear socks in bed???

I wear socks to bed! My feet get cold

NerrSnerr · 30/01/2025 19:24

@ThatUniqueKoala I'm curious. Does your husband express any preference of what he'd like to wear each day? If he goes on an evening out does he choose what he wears? Do you buy his clothes.

gangstasquirrel · 30/01/2025 19:24

ThatUniqueKoala · 30/01/2025 14:36

I'll admit it would drive me up the wall seeing somebody wearing the wrong day socks, luckily my family is quite good with it, although that's probably only because I lay out all our clothing each Sunday for the week ahead.

If left to their own devices I'd probably find both kids and DH wearing Tuesday & Sunday socks on a Wednesday.

Writing this down has made me realise I sound absolutely mental and need to get out more

Not your partner’s, right..!?

anon20 · 30/01/2025 19:26

I was going to suggest you are mad to spent that amount....it is alot to spend on socks. But, you have given me an idea. I tend to buy black socks but they're all different. I feel like chucking out all of my socks...of which there are ALOT, and buying alot if socks exactly the same ...no pairing 🥳. That would save so much time!! I'll take my old ones to the recycling.

You get enough socks for everyone - all the same style - and have one communal box of socks. (or just pair any old ones together and shove them in each room)

Surely communal socks is the way forward - one size one colour - no 'mixing them up' is there!

southenglandartist · 30/01/2025 19:29

Daughter wears socks in bed but she's a toddler so in this weather, her feet get cold as the duvet goes all over the place. So socks are definitely needed!
I HATE wearing socks to bed. It just feels too restrictive. In the super cold weather I might start with socks on, but kick them off as I warm up. In the summer, I go months without socks, it always feels weird when I put a pair on again.
DP has days of the week socks but it's a miracle if he gets the right day, he sometimes pairs them up wrong too.

Extra question : do you pair socks as you hang them up to dry? Or randomly place then pair after drying? It makes me twitch if they're not paired on the line together!

I just saw you do. I am speechless for once.

YOU want to do it, but your DH doesn’t want to pick his own clothes? Or your children and their and independency skills just doesn’t matter? 😂😩 This can’t be real.

I laugh and tell them to buy their own socks Iif they don't like the generic cheap ones I buy.

Autumndayz77 · 30/01/2025 19:35

I just stick the single ones in the appropriate drawers and leave the kids to it. Life is too short to match socks!

Luckily, none of mine are that daft. They wear generic socks from Dunnes or Aldi/Lidl, whatever. The older adult DC also love shopping in charity shops for bargains. 😆

ClockingOffers · 30/01/2025 19:40

I sort and do the laundry and drying if it's tumble dried but DH dries it if it needs handing outside and he puts away all the laundry.

I do virtually all the cooking so we divvy up the rest of the mundane tasks.

I have one of those Ikea bags under my bed with the odd socks. Every now and then I tip them all out and play a game of pairs 😂😂😂 Is it sad that I find great satisfaction finding matching pairs? 😂😂😂

I do this once a month on a Sunday morning with a cuppa.

bombastix · 30/01/2025 19:42

Solidarity OP! It was a glorious day in our house when everyone fitted into the 4-8 size and then we got communist socks.

Any colour you like, must be black,

Only exception is bed socks, but nobody loses those for some reason.

I found socks with the days of the week so got everyone 3 sets each.
This is the set I got DH

Blue for DS, pastels for DD, black for DH & brown for me. Absolutely no chance of them getting mixed up now. There's a pair for every day of the week, they say Monday - Sunday on them.

I've been thinking of doing the same with everyone's pants/boxers

Oh, you sweet summer child.

You'll be taking 5 Thursdays, 2 Wednesdays, 6 Saturdays and a Sunday with a hole it out of the machine and wondering what on earth happens on Tuesdays for all of them to have disappeared without trace by the third week in.

redfishcat · 30/01/2025 19:46

@ConflictofInterest
Learn to knit socks, they are The Best Thing Ever

Or look up Arbon socks which are the closest thing to hand knit you can buy

Cryingatthegym · 30/01/2025 19:48

I did this for my kids and I've never looked back. 40 pairs of identical grey socks for 2 boys very close in age. Best thing I ever did.

Luckily none in my family are that daft to tumble dry clothes.

😂 Then it will be ”Ok, it’s only Tuesday but it SHOULD be Friday, so it’s fine wearing one of each.”

Moier · 30/01/2025 19:54

I absolutely love socks.
I love fluffy thick socks for bed or lounging .
Boot socks for my boots. Trainer socks for trainers. But there is only me.. yet l still manage to loose the odd one 🤷‍♀️.
Family always buy me socks as part of any presents.

kitchenhelprequired · 30/01/2025 19:54

If you need two pairs of socks you aren't wearing the right socks. I bought some Marino wool mix from Costco (5 pack £10.99 in store or I think £15 on website including delivery) and they have made such a huge difference. When I run out and put on an older pair of probably cotton socks, my feet are cold.

Autumn38 · 30/01/2025 19:59

The answer is actually not to get socks in different patterns but in the same pattern. I have all black socks - exactly the same but just lots of them.

I’ve not actually done this but you could then get plain blue ones for DS, pink ones for DD and grey ones for DH. Then you just merrily match them up and if one gets left over it doesn’t really matter.
