As the title says - I am in the red zone and still some flights attempting and some managing to land. Just watched one diverted from Glasgow to MAN. One manage to land at Edinburgh whilst one right behind it looks to be diverted- another flight from Italy due to land in Edinburgh in 2 mins but can't yet find the plane. Wild that these are still scheduled and some still not cancelled throughout the highest forecast winds of the day. Must be very scary being on these planes! My house in Edinburgh already sounds like the roof is about to be lifted off!

Ohhhh the Ryanair flight trying to land at Dublin missed the runway and has to try again! You could see it get pushed to the side slightly.

How can you tell whether its trying again or been turned back? It seems to be following the same flight path as dublin to Lodon

Oh no maybe not

wonderingisthisokay · 24/01/2025 11:05

I'm an amateur FR watcher, so I can't really tell! Nobody filming live at Dublin airport this morning so there wasn't anything live to watch, not on youtube at least.

liveforsummer · 24/01/2025 11:10

Cannot believe anyone would be trying to land in Dublin right now. Wonder where these wee hiya are going and what they've been doing multiple all following the exact same flight path from Zurich.

The coloured line shows altitude and how close it got to the ground. I thought the other landings and take offs at Dublin might mean the worst of the storm has past over the area, but it might still be gusty so the airport and pilots probably have to decide minute by minute as to whether it's safe to attempt to land or if they need to abort and go around to try again.

user989 · 24/01/2025 11:10

London to dublin flight looks like its abandoned any attempt

Bjorkdidit · 24/01/2025 11:11

Yeah, it's not going towards Dublin or circling above any more is it?

user989 · 24/01/2025 11:11

Maybe trying belfast?

user989 · 24/01/2025 11:14

weirdly ryanair says it landed at 10.59

user989 · 24/01/2025 11:15

Orlando flight is about to give Dublin a go

Longwaysouth · 24/01/2025 11:17

The Ryanair Stansted to Edinburgh flight is now on the BbC news page

RainbowZebraWarrior · 24/01/2025 11:18

Checking in.

Nowt landing or taking off here at Newcastle today. All departures and arrivals so far have been cancelled. We are in the Amber zone.

wonderingisthisokay · 24/01/2025 11:21

I think they just made Ryanair hang about to give Orlando a chance to change his mind if he had to.

Ryanair is doing little figures of 8 nearby - they'll give it another go now, I bet.

Mad that they are all cancelled yet red zones are still attempting!

user989 · 24/01/2025 11:24

Nothing up or down at Leeds Bradford either, but our airport is famously on high ground in probably the windiest place in the area.

Many cancellations, although it could be because those flights were supposed to come from Dublin or Belfast so couldn't set off even if they could land. There's a few morning flights they say might leave this afternoon but who knows.

notimagain · 24/01/2025 11:25

Just passing by with a few random points:

Edinburgh was meant to be declared shut from 1000 UTC to ? 1700.

Prior to that Ryanair/anybody can attempt an approach, you just have to be aware of windspeeds and go around if in doubt.

You can’t rely on Flightradar to see fine lateral tracking, and today with the pressure as it is it is widely in error on altitudes, especially at the Scottish airports…so it’s interesting to see what goes on but don’t rely with it being accurate in detail.

As far as fuel consumption in yesterdays trans-Atlantics, the planners will have had a good handle on prospective flight times and so fuel will have been loaded reflecting the shorter sector time, the crews won’t have arrived in the UK/elsewhere surprised at having an amount of extra fuel in the tanks.

That was my thinking too. I'm guessing it's dependent on the nature / direction of wind in relation to the the runways and other factors like how exposed the airports are too perhaps?

@notimagain I reckon you'd be able to answer this one for me?

Edited to add: Oh. There you are!

wonderingisthisokay · 24/01/2025 11:31

Poor Ryanair is still circling, and earlier apparently they had a London -> Edinburgh flight redirected to COLOGNE!

Didn't that one end up at Stansted?

JaninaDuszejko · 24/01/2025 11:34

I'm shocked there are any flights in Scotland today. My sister's Loganair flight down to Glasgow was cancelled and I assumed that would be true for all red zone flights.

liveforsummer · 24/01/2025 11:35

@Chersfrozenface yes it headed out towards cologne then turned and went back to Stansted
