Flight radar - storm Eowyn version

As the title says - I am in the red zone and still some flights attempting and some managing to land. Just watched one diverted from Glasgow to MAN. One manage to land at Edinburgh whilst one right behind it looks to be diverted- another flight from Italy due to land in Edinburgh in 2 mins but can't yet find the plane. Wild that these are still scheduled and some still not cancelled throughout the highest forecast winds of the day. Must be very scary being on these planes! My house in Edinburgh already sounds like the roof is about to be lifted off!

@notimagain So the fact that Jet2 were able to land 3 planes at Newcastle just after Ryanair gave up after flying around multiple times is likely because they use different aircraft with different limits?

There's a couple of Malaga to Leeds flights where the Jet2 landed and RA has diverted to Manchester too (although Jet2 ALC to LBA appears to have diverted to Birmingham somewhere else as it past Brum while I was posting).

Edited

Might well, or that just after Ryanair diverted there was a lull and Jet2 lucked in…

The following isn’t aimed at you but I sense some think for some reason some of the diversions today mean Ryanair somehow aren’t as “good”, operationally, as other airlines

I know Ryanair get a lot of understandable stick customer service wise but from an operational, flying POV their pilots and the training they receive is on a par with pretty much everybody else in the industry.

I flew with a few ex-Ryanair folks in my time at another major airline and they were just as good as those that had joined us from the likes of, for example, Jet2 or Easyjet.

@notimagain I think k Ryanair is mostly highlighted as they seek to be attempting far more flights than other airlines. I'd imagine if this is the norm in these conditions that the pilots actually have more practical experience than some others who cancel more readily

Yes, it appears they have more flights in the air today but maybe that is proportionate to any day.

All pilots must be well trained.

Who takes the decision for a flight to go ahead or be cancelled - the airline seniorr staff, air traffic - interesting to know?

I didn't raise a question about Ryanair pilots, just pilot skill v plane v weather for all airlines. My DP can reverse his large car into a tight spot, I don't even attempt the same.

Wow looking back at the history that Jet 2 one seem to land on the first attempt.

Maybe.

Just for a bit of overview/context all companies expect their pilots to be able to operate safely right up to the published limits of their aircraft..that goes with the licence/job and regardless of the airline pilots would expect to be exposed to handling in crosswinds on the limit during the 6 monthly simulator revalidations….

Regardless of the airline the decision to operate flights today or not would be made at operations level or maybe above and whilst aircraft limits might enter into the thinking, pilot experience in crosswinds wouldn’t.

Ryanair lining up to land at Edinburgh just now.

I'm in north Edinburgh and it sounds worse now than it has all day. I'd be very surprised if it lands

I take it back, it's down!

It's landed!
Well done pilots

Just looked at the arrivals and departures for Leeds Bradford airport. Lots of cancellations and some lengthy delays of hours and hours.

Flights scheduled to land in the next few hours now expected at 2 am tomorrow morning. I've had that before - there will be people sitting at the airports waiting to come home who've probably been there for hours already and won't be setting off back until 10 pm to midnight. What an end to a holiday.

liveforsummer · 24/01/2025 17:22

Leeds Bradford isn't even in a red area but it's at a really high altitude so often has problems when winds are high

Yep, it’s the elevation and the slightly unusual (for UK) NW/SE runway alignment which means the prevailing winds are often crosswinds.

Thanks as always for your expert input on these threads @notimagain I feel that you should have your own blog! There's more people than ever interested in aviation thanks to apps like Flight Radar. I've been watching Jonathan Winton live at Newcastle Airport today. It's all so fascinating.

notimagain · 24/01/2025 18:41

@RainbowZebraWarrior

Thanks, face made for radio me, so I think I’ll give the blog a miss..😬

Most of the wind has died down now, therefore so has most of the drama. There's a flight arriving in about 13 minutes in Glasgow from Amsterdam which might be worth watching.
