On the other "turn around" thread, someone has suggested the way forward for the country is to deny healthcare to anyone who hasn't paid in enough tax.... only children would be exempt... so at least they've a heart!

They sound, er, delightful.

Need more cats!

Elodie09 · 19/01/2025 18:42

I hope my other post did not make it look as if I am against benefits. I am absolutely not against benefits ; carers allowance is ridiculously low and penalising people if they go slightly over the minimum pay they get for 16 hours or thereabouts is very wrong.
I began working life, becoming a parent and paying for nursery etc at a time when you could not see that it would be the Government making top up payments like UC and Family tax credits because a full time wage was simply not enough to live on.
I am critical of employers claiming they cannot pay a good wage as it will eat in to their profits.
Looking at you NEXT.

I am convinced that thread is some kind of experiment to see just how far you can take batshit ideas before people start thinking, 'hold on a moment'

@Elodie09 no, not all! Your point was clear. And right!

That other thread is full of wind up merchants. No one would seriously think Starmer would happily adopt a policy of letting people on disability benefits die.

cardibach · 19/01/2025 18:47

Where is the turnaround thread? I can’t see one.

It is in AIBU. To wonder what could Starmer do, to turn things around?

pointythings · 19/01/2025 18:57

PandoraSox · 19/01/2025 18:22

That is an excellent name.

All my cats are pasta. The big tabby is Fettucine, the black one is Tortellini, the ginger is Lasagne and the not quite so gormless ginger and white is Cannelloni (he and Rigatoni are brothers).

Just scrolled through 4 pages of AIBU and dont see it. It won’t let me go to page 5 for sone reason…

You’re better off not seeing it. It’s putrid.

I fo7nd it by a search in the end. I’ll let it die

Llttledrummergirl · 19/01/2025 19:05

I saw that the other day, looked at the op and closed it. I have no time or inclination to be communicating with someone I consider a bot/ bad actor. There is only so many times you can say liar before it becomes tedious.

I need to have nothing better to do for a few hours and be in the mood.

She is foul. Suddenly immigrants are ex-pats. Proving the point posted a little while back.

I despise her.🤬

I'd say there a lots of posters who are not what they might pretend to be.

I bet the people of Skegness are delighted to see the back of her.

bombastix · 19/01/2025 21:26

I'm not really concerned re carers or disability benefits. I do think that the current system creates perverse incentive at the 16 hour point which needs looking at. I do not think that this should be enabled by the welfare state. This looks to me really unaffordable long term. And it gives an element of choice that I think is wrong as an outcome. We have a smaller working population than ever to fund the welfare state.

The 16 hr doesn't really apply on UC that was on WTC. Most people will gave migrated from tax credits to UC. Once your child is 3 you will get expected to work for 30hours per week or show that you have put the effort in for 30hrs looking for work otherwise you could be sanctioned.

@Bombastix it is incredibly lazy to just say 'target benefits' when there are enormously complex reasons as to why people in the UK need them. @PandoraSox has already laid them out very neatly - I would add that if you want people with chronic conditions and disabilities to enter the workplace and stay there, employers need to make that possible. We all know that the majority of employers won't do this because it's so easy to get someone for whom they don't need to make any adjustments. This is a shocking waste of talent, but sadly the only way we're going to make employers take on people who have disabilities or illnesses is with financial incentives.

Yes, ds works in software development. Can work from home but boss prefers him in office and ds likes going in.

Today he cannot go in as the lifts are out of order and he can't walk. They may take a month to fix.

It doesn't prevent him doing his job - but if he wants to apply for a new company who expect so much in office time they may not employ someone who cannot make it dependent on things like lifts when they take weeks to fix.

It shouldn't happen - but it does.

itsgettingweird · 20/01/2025 07:28

I live and worked abroad for many years and ds was born abroad.

All the Brits called themselves ex pats. Many of them would be who would vote for Reform now or the RW arm of the Tory's.

It's an age old thing that people coming into the country are immigrants and they are ex pats - mainly because they didn't get benefits and free healthcare abroad.

They still claimed their state pension though and didn't spend that in our economy.

I still laugh now that so many voted for brexit - and are incensed they have to either become full resident or come back to the UK regularly.

She, Liz Truss, Priti Patel and Tobias Ellwood are shut out of the oath-taking so they’ll have to watch it on TV with Lawrence Fox & Ant Middleton
