Has his appointment been approved by Trump ?

No and according to Trump (or Farage) sources they aren't happy with it

Interesting.

Farage will obviously have picked up on the phrase "patriotic recoil" that has descended upon the Musk situation and will be well aware that despite the media portrayal of the UK government as evil incarnate, the vast majority of the UK really do not like and will not put up with any foreigners sticking their nose into the UKs business. And if anyone knows about that it's Nigel Farage.

I think the best way to view things currently is a blender with blades-a-spinning that will happily slice through anything and anyone that misses their rhythm and fails to drop through cleanly.

Obviously if Mandelson is a fucking useless as Musk told Trump, then there is no reason for Trump to worry is there ?

Of course it may be that Mandelson was actually a stalking horse for a candidate of a different stripe.

If Mandelson is approved, it will be because it was a brilliant idea of Donald Trump for the UK to send a politician rather than a diplomat. And I am sure Keir Starmer will thank him personally for his advice.

DuncinToffee · 19/01/2025 17:02

Farage had invited Mandelson to his pre-inauguration party, he declined. The current ambassador Karen Pierce did attend.

I for one am glad that my severely disabled relative is entitled to benefits so they haven't starved to death.
I'm glad that another relative was able to receive carers allowance so they could look after them.
I was shocked that when they received their state pension, that the carers allowance stopped as you can't receive both, despite still being a carer.

I'm glad good people continue to pay taxes so that our vulnerable can be taken care of. It makes me think really badly of those who have the most, but want to share the least.

SerendipityJane · 19/01/2025 17:17

Carers "allowance" ? £82 a week for a 24/7 job. Hardly plasma TV and alternate weeks in Majorca scale of benefit is it. Which you can only claim if you work less than 16 hours a week.

Has anyone tried caring for someone 24/7 ?

As an interim measure, yes. Two weeks in and I was so pleased to go back to work. It nearly broke me. £82 a week is an insult.

Many can't work because they are carers. Not that they exist according to our benefits regime.

BIossomtoes · 19/01/2025 17:36

It’s obvious that you can’t work if you’re providing 24/7 care. I had compassionate leave for those two weeks. Going back to work felt like a holiday. I have no idea how people care for their relatives, they have my utmost respect.

Obvious ? Hardly.

Try missing a UC interview because you've had to clean up after an incontinence incident and the paid carers you are waiting for are late.

Try appealing a sanction because you can't leave the house in case your charge needs to get to a toilet.

Where's that ITV drama ?

Elodie09 · 19/01/2025 17:50

I agree with your post @prettybird re employers having the Government "lift" because they are not paying a decent wage.

Yep. I'm fortunate that DH earns enough for us to have a comfortable standard of living, partly possible because housing is relatively cheap in this region, even in good areas.

I did do a voluntary activity for a day a month for a few years. I ended up giving it up because something or other came up with one of the boys or DH couldn't work from home that day and be home for them finishing school on such a regular basis that I managed it only twice out of the usual 9 or 10 meetings in that year.

Of course someone who has been caring for - say - 20 years will have squandered their time in the workforce and end up with fuck all prospects and pension.

Alliteration ahoy !

Yep. My own pension is pathetic from the few years I worked and, at this point, having not worked for over 20 years and having no references, I am probably regarded as unemployable.

I get Carer's Allowance (no other benefits @bombastix, so it is not a ticket for doing very little).

I pay 20% tax on it, so it works out even less.

I think someone needs to post some puppy pics - else this thread will descend into a pitiful whingefest ....

DuncinToffee · 19/01/2025 18:09

Not a puppy pic, will cold war steve's bench do?

I am not whingeing, Jane. I am bloody lucky that I have a modest occupational pension and am OK financially. But I do think CA should be tax free in the same way PIP is, especially as the two are linked.

Rigatoni disapproves of the way carers are treated in this country.

On the other "turn around" thread, someone has suggested the way forward for the country is to deny healthcare to anyone who hasn't paid in enough tax.... only children would be exempt... so at least they've a heart!
