I’ve just listened to the News Agents podcast about Tulip which had an interview with the Times journalist just back from Bangladesh. My goodness, it’s damning. It also raised the very interesting point that Lou Haigh was booted out immediately for what appeared to be a relatively minor offence but TS appears to be Teflon coated.

It is an interesting (re) development how affairs outwith the UK are able to influence affairs within the UK.

Going back to the age of Kings, this was (of course) perfectly normal and everyone knew roughly how to deal with it.

People have (conveniently) forgotten how less than a year ago the wife of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was not a UK citizen. Which rather puts any criticisms of a non elected non UK citizen interfering in UK politics into context.

That isn’t really the issue. It’s more the credibility of the minister responsible for anti corruption being bankrolled by her corrupt deposed family member. It really doesn’t pass the smell test - for me at least.

No that's this specific issue.

It arises from the wider issue of the interconnectedness of politics across geography. Which is allowing people in one country to directly and immediately affect ordinary people in another.

Britain is suffering a little here from shoes changing feet - because for nearly 3 centuries it was us that was the "country that decides what happens in your country".

BIossomtoes · 14/01/2025 12:23

But I was talking about this specific issue.

PandoraSox · 14/01/2025 13:10

TS needs to step aside. It looks bad.

DuncinToffee · 14/01/2025 13:35

NEW: Assisted dying bill committee will be chaired by 5 MPs on rotation.

Carolyn Harris - abstained
Clive Efford - voted for
Roger Gale - against
Peter Dowd - for
Esther McVey - against

None of the 5 vote at third reading, taking on a Speaker-esque impartiality in their role chairing sessions.

@SerendipityJane i don’t post much on here, but I always love reading yours! I hope you write in rl!

I agree,

I don't always fully comprehend it first time (dyslexic) but I love reading your posts and then spending time working out the meaning. You have a lovely writing style.

Is this the news casts one with LK? (Only this thread could auto correct casts to cats at first!!)

If not they did a similar podcast on it.

Ministerial Standards advisor Sir Laurie Magnus found no breach of ministerial code, but she says she has become a distraction.

McVey and Gale?? I wouldn't want to be on that committee much...

Cheguevarahamster · 14/01/2025 16:20

Well I don't know why it took her so long!

Waiting for the Standards report?

She was cleared of breaking the code but this line is probably what pushed her to resign rather than getting sacked

you will want to consider her ongoing responsibilities in the light of" her close family's association with Bangladesh
