I have attended many Christmas markets over the years. They are so crowded especially at the moment as German children finished school for the Christmas holidays. Frightening, my prayers are with all the victim's 🙏

I just think we cede a lot of ground when we get into these nitpicking arguments about which precise foreign religious sect with a grudge the terrorist was acting on behalf of.

Maybe this guy will turn out to be part of an organised Islamist group, maybe he was "just" radicalised online to the point that he decided to ram a car through a crowd to fight for his cause. I don't really care to be honest. It's bad enough having terrorists fighting over our own domestic politics. We don't need terrorists here fighting over politics on the other side of the world.

The thing is that a crime by a migrant or refugee was one that by definition never needed to happen. It was utterly preventable and it was a failure of government that led to it
