Unfunny comedians

We've covered lousy actors and questionable singers. A further spin-off: who really isn't that funny, past or present? I offer:

Hale and Pace
Freddie Starr
Lenny Henry

Mean-spirited, I know.

On the plus side, I did like Jimmy Tarbuck. I'm probably being unfashionable but his delivery as a stand-up was perfect, even if some of the jokes wouldn't go down well today.

I agree with most people on here. I don’t find any ‘comedians’ funny really, with the exception of..

The Scottish fella (and it’s not Billy Conelly) I cry laughter watching him.

I like Jason Manford and Ricky Gervais. I don’t like The Office but I like his stand up.

Kevin Bridges! That’s the funny boy.

ItoldyouIwassick · 22/12/2024 02:03

Joe Lycett is awful.

Saw a comedian on a bill recently who I'd never heard of, Sophie Duker, absolutely appalling bad.

Michael bloody Macintyre. Nobody finds him as funny as he does. You’ll notice he’s seldom on panel shows like QI, Have I got news for you, 8 out of 10 cats etc. This is because he’s absolutely devoid of any spontaneous humour.

I love him and find him very funny.

Probably an unpopular choice as everyone else seems to like them - French and Saunders.

Sean Walsh
Rosie Jones - just incredibly crude
Miranda
Lou Sanders

I feel mean for saying Joel Dommett, I didn’t find him funny but he’s in the new season of Never Mind the Buzzcocks with Courtney Love and he seems genuinely baffled and afraid of her in equal measure and it did endear me to him. I wouldn’t be able to watch his stand up though.

Edited

Yes Miranda...just so cringe and trying too hard.

Inertia · 22/12/2024 02:44

Not seen anyone mention Geoff Norcott yet- his entire act (from what I’ve heard on radio) is based around how edgy he is for being right-wing.

I disagree with many of Rosie Jones’nn views , but hoped she’d be funny on Taskmaster. The poo obsession was very off-putting.

Schoolsec · 22/12/2024 07:02

Rosie Jones - just not funny
Lou Sanders - boring
Lenny Henry

Love Lee Mack, Marcus Brigstocke and Sarah Milican

Ha ha, he was a Glaswegian shipbuilder before he started standup. Do you think that he only stated swearing later in life?

well yes, in his comedy he did

Sindhu Vee is Indian. She speaks with an Americanised accent . She’s not remotely London! (No idea if she is posh by Indian standards) She lives in London and worked in the City for years. She also has 4 degrees including one from Oxford.

You cannot get more posh OR more London than that.

(I also think she's really funny - the exception to the rule for Radio 4 female panel comedians).

I’ve worked in the City for 35 years and have a degree from Cambridge. I wasn’t born in England though, and I’m neither posh nor “London”…posh London to me is the Made in Chelsea set.

I agree that she is funny though.

I think MM has got a really nasty streak, no regard for anyone else as a human being...

In fact, I don't like any comedian who gives off a whiff of 'must have been the school bully.' Lee Mack, Eddie Large back in the day, like that...

To that end, I love Rhod Gilbert because I think he has a core of sweetness or sensitivity to him - suspect he's actually quite shy underneath.

I wonder if there are two kinds of comedian - the ones who were dominant at school and wielded humour as a weapon, and the underdogs who developed comedy as a defence mechanism?

This is what attracts me to Miranda Hart. She seems so sweet.

Lolalady · 22/12/2024 10:50

I saw Freddie Star live. I always found him hilarious ! I still love Morcambe and Wise.

Very few of these new modern comedians do it for me. Bob Monkhouse was very clever.

She was very funny on Graham Norton.

“PUSSY!! PUSSY!! IT’S SPERM!!”

Pumpkincozynights · 22/12/2024 11:12

I think Billy Connolly is as funny as watching paint dry.
The moment he starts rambling on I switch off.
A very funny duo are Joan & Flo. Very talented.

Pumpkincozynights · 22/12/2024 11:17

Oh and the persona that is Keith Lemon- not remotely funny.
Never found anything that Lee guy did was funny.
I saw Rick Mayall do a show once, hate to say it but the unknown warm up act was funnier.
The funniest comedian I have ever seen was in a comedy club in Leeds. He was unknown, and I cannot remember his name but I was laughing so much my stomach was hurting.

TheHistorian · 22/12/2024 11:48

Agree with the Rosie Jones comments. Also any comedians who rely on shouting to be funny , Ben Elton and co.

Funniest comedians I have seen live are Jack Dee and Jasper Carrot, genius the pair of them. Unfortunately Jasper did the show with Alister McGowan, the complete opposite, smug and very pleased with himself. Not funny at all.

poetrylover · 22/12/2024 11:51

Yes, I struggle with one liners or slapstick so I really don't like Milton Jones, Lee Evans, Tim Vine. Also absolutely hate Gary Delaney. He is rubbish.

Allog · 22/12/2024 15:11

Katherine Ryan

Merida46 · 22/12/2024 16:31

Rosie Jones,
Nish Kumar,
Greg McHugh(Garry, Tank commander),
Romesh Ranganathan,
Alan Carr,
Harry Hill,
Katharine Ryan

MysteriousInspector · 22/12/2024 17:59

Saw Billy Connolly's incontinence pants routine on the TV the other day. The celebrity audience were in absolute fits. Apparently it is a classic.

I think it's dire.

NeedWineNow · 22/12/2024 18:04

Rosie Jones
Michael MCIntyre
Romesh Ranganathan

Just No.

LuluBlakey1 · 22/12/2024 18:36

Lee Mack is funny.

Bubbles90 · 22/12/2024 19:43

Rosie Jones. She is absolutely awful. Just not funny.
Lenny Henry
Katherine Ryan

I've just watched a clip of 'Sandhog' Vee on You Tube and I like her!
