Gavin and Stacey - first time I've watched it! No spoilers please!

I'm not sure why I never watched this back in 2007, but have finally started watching this evening!
Up to the one where they just got married.

Smithy is a horrible character but I love, love, love Nessa!

My favourite try to watch them all before Christmas Day, as the final one is on..
So many great characters.

It’s my go-to. Sat up watching it all night when I was in early labour, and again when I lost my Dad and couldn’t sleep. My baby is now a teenager and when she’s upset we watch a few episodes together. So looking forward to sitting down to the finale on Christmas Day!

I watched the Detectorists with my son who thoroughly enjoyed it. And Life on Mars too!

I don't remember Smithy being that horrible (especially compared to Pete and Dawn!) but I didn't love one of his dating storylines. Pam is my favourite character, I find Gavin's parents very comforting for some reason!

Why do you think Smithy is horrible? I love Smithy! I was also late to the G&S party as lived abroad at the time and we only had star TV. I love it. Hope the special lives up to the hype.

Watching it with my teen DD before the Christmas special. She thinks Smithy and Stacey are selfish and says Gavin and Mick are the only nice ones 😂

Pam ("is that ham, Pam?") is my favourite, apart from Nessa.

Smithy isn't horrible, just a bit thick! James Cordon on the other hand... but let's not ruin it, glorious series!

I never watched it when it was on originally and binged it all in 2019 as I had FOMO having heard so much about the Christmas special. I love it now. One of my comfort blanket programmes. I’m going to catch up on the last Christmas special at least before the final episode

Stacey really is spoiled.
Smithy is offensive, he judges Nessa so much in the beginning.

Love it too and have seen every episode about a zillion times. Gavin and Stacey are the least interesting characters in it!

But that's the whole story. It's a love/hate relationship. Smithy, Nessa and even Stacey are all awful but we love them anyway. I love Pam and Mick and have a real soft spot for Deano.

One of my favourite shows of all time! I said to DD this morning I must have watched it 20 times, she questioned how I still wasn’t bored of it. Nope, comedy gold!
I think Smithy improves over the series. If OP has only seen season 1 he does come across as a prick!
I love the characters, the dynamics, the amazing ability they have as writers to refute the basic rule of storytelling - all dialogue must be relevant to the storyline. Nope, whole scene about oven gloves 😄
Doris is my favourite character 💕

It was my go-to when I lost my Dad too! An episode happened to be on, and it quiet my mind, so I ended up watching it over and over for weeks.

Every time you watch it you notice something you'd missed before. Clever little asides or gestures. I'm not really a James Corden fan but the script is sheer genius.

One of my favourite shows ever. It's like a comfort blanket. I can't wait for the Christmas special but I'm also in no way ready for it to be fully over. Smithy gets better! He evolves over the whole show and is one of the best characters.

I'm jealous OP! I love all the characters except Stacey.

What I love about it is it's not always laugh out load or slapstick. It's often a slow burning comedy that comes to you again in some random life moment. For example if I ever hear the Smiths 'There is a light that never goes out' I can't stop smiling. Sometimes when someone is calling out a website I think 'women wearing wings'. I saw Coldplay recently and when 'Fix you' came on I couldn't help but laugh. There are lots of other moments in life where I think of it, no spoilers!

I love all of the characters except Gavin & Stacey who are bland and self centred.
