I'm not sure why I never watched this back in 2007, but have finally started watching this evening!
Up to the one where they just got married.

Smithy is a horrible character but I love, love, love Nessa!

Just binge watched it again ready for Christmas and I was surprised at all the named checked people who have turned out to be dodgy since. For example, Al Fayed in episode 2...

Yes that was spot on!

Oh I'm loving Nessa's past experience tales with famous people!
She looked super cool as a lorry driver and the Eddie Stobart story was so funny!

Have you seen the out take of the scene where she drives off in the lorry?

I've never seen it. How many episodes are there? Is it worth it? Is it dated? So many people have been talking about it I wonder if I should watch. I guess I was busy with a baby toddler in 2007 and following years...

There's only three series and I think 2 Christmas specials, a 3rd one coming soon.
It's really good! I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

I don’t think it’s an outtake. I think it’s the take they use.

Arraminta · 14/12/2024 18:26

I love Doris. Totally subverts the 'sweet, old lady next door trope.' And absolutely love how her much younger gentleman callers are clearly besotted with her.

FiveFoxes · 14/12/2024 18:40

I'd like to point out that the iPhone was released in 2007 and the smoking ban in pubs came in in 2007 - both the year Gavin and Stacey started!

khaitai · 14/12/2024 19:03

Watching it this evening. So many brilliant lines.

Nessa: "I'll have a cider, you want a cider Stace?"
Stacey: "Oh...no I'm trying not to drink"
Nessa: "Why?"
Stacey: "For health reasons"
Nessa: "Don't be a twat Stace"

Where she hits the car and breaks the wing mirror? I didn't think they used it. Prepared to be told I'm wrong.

Well yes, but there are no smart phones in action and much smoking in pubs happening.

I’m rewatching at the moment. I’ll keep an eye out and report back.

Not many people actually had an iPhone in 2007 though! They certainly weren’t as ubiquitous as they are now.

Oh OP I am so jealous that you’re just starting on your Gavin & Stacey journey! We were a little late to the party and didn’t start watching until 2010 when our youngest was a newborn. For the last 14 years though we have watched it more times than I can count. Just finished season 1 again - planning to get through them all before Christmas Day.

I do think it’s pretty dated and hasn’t aged well in a lot of ways - the whole nineties/noughties lad culture with the drinking, smoking, objectifying women etc. I guess it was seen as empowering for women in the same way that SATC was with the female characters being open about sex though.

Despite that though it is a total comfort watch and I love it. Pam and Mick are the dream in-laws/friend’s parents and I love seeing their relationships with all the next generation.

Like a PP said - there are certain songs now that when I hear them I instantly think of G&S - There is a Light that Never Goes Out, Step into Christmas, So Strong and Fairytale of New York

magicalmrmistoffelees · 14/12/2024 20:12

Islands in the Stream and Three Wise Men, too 😁

I don't remember Smithy being that horrible (especially compared to Pete and Dawn!) but I didn't love one of his dating storylines. Pam is my favourite character, I find Gavin's parents very comforting for some reason!

I found them, as a couple, totally believable, especially loved the Charles and Camilla with big ears scene.
Smithy isn’t horrible, his ordering takeaway is a classic scene as well as the
‘Smithy breaks into Wales’
For me the weak link was Gav, thought he was limp.

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 14/12/2024 20:35

Pam and Mick = relationship goals!

I’ve just watched that scene. They don’t show the bit of her going up to the end of the street and hitting the orange car. But as Bryn and Gwen drive off you can see something on the floor, not sure if that’s the wing mirror.
So you are right.

I think Gavin and Stacey were supposed to be the weakest characters, it was kind of the point. Their ‘normality’ and relative dullness was intended to highlight the eccentricity of the surrounding cast I think.

JasonTindallsTan · 14/12/2024 21:50

I can’t sing along to Do they know it’s Christmas without adding a little ‘yes!’ At the point Gav joins in and a ‘doom it’s doom!’ At the relevant juncture 🤣

RockaLock · 14/12/2024 21:59

I love Gavin & Stacey, but I thought the last Christmas special they did was dreadful.

I am hoping this year's is a return to form.

I didn’t like it at the time but found it much better when I watched it again the other day.

It's one of my favourites and it's definitely a comfort xxx

O thanks for this - I was half right then lol
