I'm not sure why I never watched this back in 2007, but have finally started watching this evening!
Up to the one where they just got married.

Smithy is a horrible character but I love, love, love Nessa!

What is this surname reference please?!

Mylittlebobble · 14/12/2024 04:41

Serial killers

Oh and I never clocked the West surname as well as Shipman. Dark!!

It’s only in the first Christmas episode you discover Pete and Dawn’s surname is Sutcliffe!

It’s full of such subtle humour I agree you pick up on something new even after watching it many times. Like when Stacey says about the wedding dress ‘I know it’s white, right, but who can honestly say they’re a virgin these days?’ and then it just pans to Bryn. When the stripper on the hen do squirts cream, Stacey makes an 🙊 face and then later Nessa’s face is covered in cream 😆 Neil the baby using tinfoil for his Christmas present!

PiastriThePastry · 14/12/2024 08:43

Oh I’m so SO jealous. I adore Gavin and Stacey and would love to be watching it for the first time with fresh eyes (rather than rewatching for what feels like the millionth time!)
Smithy is awful, in lots of ways, but aren’t they all? I think that’s what makes it so wonderful, they’re all so wonderfully loveable despite being (varying degrees of!) twats in their own ways… apart from Mick who is perfect in every way and will forever be the real love of my life. Soz DH, who takes the piss out of me every time I watch it for being so besotted with him 🤣

BusySittingDown · 14/12/2024 08:45

Gavin and Stacey is just excellent.

I'm jealous that you're getting to watch it for the first time. The Christmas specials are just the best! In fact I quoted Bryn already this morning (I have some mint Baileys in, IYKYK 😉).

BusySittingDown · 14/12/2024 08:47

I just want to go to Pam and Mick's for Christmas. I love all the characters, especially Doris.

Sunshineandrainbow · 14/12/2024 08:48

Also watching for the first time, currently on series 2, hoping to get through it before the Christmas day special.

I deffo have a crush on Mick 💞

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/12/2024 08:50

Catch phrases in our family:

What's occurring?

Oh!

Oooh Mick it's the drama! I love it!

Tidy

(There are others I'm sure)

AreYouShittingMe · 14/12/2024 08:57

Also rewatching in preparation for the Christmas special! My favourite bits are just the interactions between the characters, especially Pam and Mick (love them!). As PP have said, great writing and probably would be cut from other series because it's not 'exciting' but for me it makes it. And I just love how accepting everyone is of each other. I want to give examples, but don't want to give spoilers for those who are watching it for the first time!

Or in real life, Dinas Powys!

Known to the locals as 'Dinky Poo'!

Compash · 14/12/2024 09:05

Lived abroad when it was first on so just catching up with it, but the 'acceptance of people with all their flaws' reminds me of the Moomins... (which is, of course, an excellent thing)...

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 14/12/2024 09:08

What I love about it as well is that it has this edge of the surreal. It is on the surface a straight sitcom but you just have this strange under tone to it all.

I only noticed the tinfoil part!
This is what I love about G&S. It's so subtle, I loves it I do.
Cracking.

You're missing out. He's a good character.

I know! I might try watching! 😁

Jinglegal · 14/12/2024 09:18

Step in to Christmas… 🎄😂

As a Beatles fan, that name has a different slant to me. 🤪

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/12/2024 09:23

Nessa asking for batteries then coming downstairs and washing one hand under the tap and saying she didn't need them any more.

Gavin coming out of Arrivals after their honeymoon and can't see Stacey. She turns up and said she hung back because a woman in a headscarf bent down to do something to her shoe. I only twigged this on about the third watch. An awful joke in many ways but relevant to recent events. The funniest part being that she left him to it.

There's a short programme on iplayer interviewing some of the smaller part actors. Including the actor who played Owain Hughes who has spent the rest of his life explaining the (non) 'joke' and the woman in the Pharmacy when G and S went in to buy a pregnancy test and they had a face off. That woman is now a teacher and every new intake the kids show her the meme on Tiktok.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 14/12/2024 12:43

@Aintnobodygottime I agree Gavin is a great actor. It's much harder be the straight character reacting to all the madness around. A good comedy needs that to counter act all the quirks.

@AreYouShittingMe you are right, they just accept each other. Its quite refreshing. If it was a MN story they would all be NC by now!! Especially Stacey she so deceitful yet spoilt, a particularly awful combination. Gav forgave her for lying about all her fiancés, there were some other stuff too, one major one I won't ruin for OP but i have to say I think he is a bit of a saint for being able go move on.

Cookerhood · 14/12/2024 12:55

I just started watching it yesterday too. I'm not great with any cringy type humour (not sure that is the word, but I hated The Office). I love Pam & Mick.
The main thing I noticed yesterday was that when G&S came back from their honeymoon it was supposed to be March or April & it was autumn with fallen leaves on the ground. You'd have thought they would have swept them away & not put the characters in from of a hedge with brown leaves on it!
Aside from that I'm really enjoying it & will binge some more today.

holidayfever2024 · 14/12/2024 13:10

Oooh I can't wait for the Christmas special.

What I need to ask of all you fans rewatching it or watching in readiness for the finale- what age do my kids need to be to watch it with us ?

We are currently watching Friday night dinner with them - 11 and 13
Is this any more or less suitable ?

I was about to mention Nessa and the batteries 😂

I don’t get the relevance of the headscarf/shoe thing?

RedHelenB · 14/12/2024 13:32

Anyone else for their mint Bailey's for Christmas? Just need to get the white toblerone now.

Jellycats4life · 14/12/2024 13:46

James Corden is notoriously a tosser but Smithy has so many of my favourite lines. Asking how many nurofen he’d need to finish him off, the American Boy recital with his sister, his Indian takeaway order… 😂

One thing that bugs me, as an Essex girl, is that all of the promo for the show mentions Barry Island but Billericay is all but forgotten. The contrast is what makes the show!
